KOL HAKAVOD RABBI BILLET:

More On Father Patrick Desbois

Dear Friends:

Father Patrick Desbois is a Catholic priest who has devoted

many years to finding mass graves of Jews in the Holocaust.  Rabbi Billet invited Father Desbois to YIW so he could convey his story.

In my mind, we Jews a debt of gratitude to this wonderful gentleman for his work.  Of course, it raises the question in my mind why we Jews are not doing the same. We chase after Nazis to avenge them, but we do not search out these mass graves so that we can mark them, say "Kel Maleh Rachamim" to honor those we lost to sanctify G-d's name.  What a shame.

Those Rabbis who stood up publicly against Rabbi Billet, it appears to me, greatly risked their seat in the world to come.  If they had differing opinions, they should have been dealt with on a personal level with Rabbi Billet.  It is not to say that they are wrong, but their differences should have been dealt with more on the level of Shamai and Hillel, than the students of Rabbi Akiva, AH.  -Suri

The following is the letter Rabbi Billet wrote to his congregants:

Dear Congregants:

A number of people have approached me about some of the negative public reaction to YIW's invitation to Father Desbois to speak in our JKMMS sanctuary on Shabbos morning. There were opinion articles in Yated Ne'eman  http://www.yated.com/content.asp?contentid=504 and in the local 5 Towns Jewish Times   http://www.5tjt.com/local-news/12353-a-priest-in-the-sanctuary  as well as several letters and an editor's remark in the latter paper. There was one local Rabbi who announced before the end of services that he wanted to go on record with a protest over the YIW event lest people mistake his silence as approval of the event. "Many Five Towns Rabbis" were acknowledged anonymously as having expressed their displeasure. None of these Rabbis ever called to discuss the matter or to inquire as to what exactly was happening in YIW or what halachic basis if any, was used to allow the event to take place in the manner that it did. Neither writer in the two above mentioned papers called to check their facts. Both got facts wrong. But the 5 Times Jewish Times was far more factually on target than the Yated. The Editor of the Times also responded with incorrect information to a letter he received on this subject. See Editor's remarks http://www.5tjt.com/local-news/12439-rabbinic-decisions-selective-scrutiny#addcomments. This week's 5 Towns Times has another letter on the subject : http://www.5tjt.com/local-news/12521-letters-to-the-editor. That letter as well is filled with correct information and perplexing analogies and conclusions.

I intend to give a public shiur with sources to explain my point of view. In brief there are two letters in the responsa literature that I am familiar with that address the subject of a non Jewish clergyman in an Orthodox Jewish sanctuary. They are Har Tzvi O"C 1:85 (Rav Tzvi Pesach) Frank and Shevet HaLevi 2:59 (Rav Shmuel HaLevi Vosner). Rav Frank discusses the issue of the presence of religious symbols or icons worn by non Jewish clergy that may represent 'avodah zarah' (idol worship) in Shul. Rav Vosner discusses the presence of a non Jewish clergyman in Shul during services. Assume, for argument's sake, that the halacha is stringent on these matters, neither of these concerns were relevant to us. Father Desbois was dressed in a suit and black turtleneck only, and he arrived at the end of services!

The Editor of the 5 Towns Times refers to two incidents to defend his reporter's critique of the YIW event: "When the Pope came to a synagogue in Manhattan two years ago, Cantor Helfgott refused to lead the services because he was of the same mind. Whenever an official from the Catholic Church was brought into the beis midrash of Yeshiva University, their roshei yeshiva did not attend, and they informed their students of this position." Neither Cantor Helfgot's refusal to lead services in front of the Pope are relevant in our case (since Father Desbois was not present during services) nor is it correct that the YU Roshai Yeshiva formally boycotted the organized scheduled visit of the Cardinals to the YU Bais Midrash. THERE WAS NO BOYCOTT!!!!

There was a time letters were used to spell words. Now they are complete sentences. TTYL GN. Vowels are practically obsolete!

                Language has gone wild!

  • Bad- is now good, though it used to be bad.
  • Sick- is great, though it used to be bad.
  • Kindle- used to be what we did to a candle, now it's a portable bookcase.
  • Dragons- were extinct now they write for us when we speak to a computer.

My son once asked me if I want him to "burn" the CD. I responded, "can't you just throw it out?" I thought burning might be a green thing. I didn't want to get in trouble with the EPA.

Wouldn't you have thought surfing the web- you'd see a spider riding the waves!

We used to criticize the last generation for being a "me" generation. People were too self-involved! Now we complain it's too much of an "I" generation- people are completely outside themselves and inside something else.

How about politics, even there we've got words going crazy! Get this: A glove and a lizard and the Hebrew word "yes" are the new front runners for the GOP- Mitt, Newt, and Cain.

                Think about this conversation:

  • " Do you have the new talking Apple"
  • "No I have a Macintosh"
  • "Oh, a laptop"
  • "No a hand held"
  • "Oh they make a hand held Macintosh?"
  • "Yeah, I got it at Shoprite along with my hand held orange that I put in my hand held shopping cart, paid for, and ate with my mouth held teeth."

 My Super-Chill High Schooler

 Shira Dicker, Bungalow Babe

Last week, fresh off the plane from our Italian excursion, HOBB and I drove up to SAR High School in Riverdale for that stress-fest known as Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Being an SAR event, much of the stress factor was absent, though we basically showed up without appointments, having screwed up the online registration process just before we left the country.

As it was the equivalent of three in the morning for us, jet-lag further shaped our perceptions and reactions. Also, given that exhaustion makes me punchy, I could not stop giggling. In retrospect, I worry that I must have appeared stoned to half of our son's teachers.

But the real factor in defusing the experience that typically unnerves parents is the nature of Little Babe, our youngest child, a high school junior.

Little Babe is a sweet, diligent, respectful, smart... and very relaxed student.

The teachers typically adore him. He participates in class. He has creative insights. He has quirky interest and abilities. He is kind-hearted. His worst offense is talking to friends.

And not completing his assignments.

Little Babe's performance on tests is also less-than-stellar, reflecting his underlying learning issues and ADD...and also his penchant for minimalistic studying.

For years, we have left parent-teacher conferences with broad smiles of pride and furrowed brows of concern.

The concern we feel has been further compounded by our son's unflappably stress-free attitude. Maybe it's our own fault because we don't pitch parental fits, but there is no way to get our son to care about getting better grades.

While we are far from Tiger Parents, we would frankly like to see him break a sweat over his schoolwork. But he is neither a slacker nor a scofflaw. He just invests his academic energies solely into what takes place inside the classroom.

Once he is out of the classroom, music subsumes his life. He sleeps in a room with several instruments and amps. He wakes up and plugs in his electric guitar or bass. He leaves the house wearing his headphones. He composes and orchestrates and records his music. He writes lyrics. He plays and sings and teaches himself new instruments. Without a single lesson, he now plays piano well enough that he is composing pieces for the keyboard. He stays late to jam with other students and teachers and participates in practically every musical after school club.

Little Babe is the third child in the family, the youngest sibling of two students who strove to achieve good grades. Middle Babe was especially tormented by her grades in her final two years of high school but her own diligence was nothing compared with the nervous breakdowns most of her friends were experiencing. Big Babe's high school classmates were similarly poisoned by the conviction that unless they got into Harvard-Yale-Princeton-Penn-Cornell-Brown (Columbia was considered a safety school), their lives were over.

Last year, when I was a graduate student at Columbia, I was a complete sleepless lunatic, chasing down deadlines, working on my assignments, wishing to distinguish myself through my schoolwork. Little Babe awoke and fell asleep to the sight of me working on my various projects at the dining room table. Though I am still incredulous at having gotten my MA at the age of 50, secretly, I am plotting to go for my doctorate.

At one point last year, on the night before a test, I interrupted Little Babe's private Red Hot Chili Peppers jam session to goad him into studying for more than half an hour. After he stared at me impassively, I blurted out, in sheer frustration, "Aren't I a good student role model for you?"

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
