HILCHOS SHKOYACHGEBENHILCHOS THANKSGIVING
Mesoyreh: One must engage in a seudah to celebrate the heiligkite of the yuntif. It's brought down in the May Achuz that this heilig day is heiliger than Chalamoyd and Hoyshanarabba combined!
Lechatchilah: One should sit down for the meal after plag hamincha, but before tzais, so that it takes place at a time when the original nayce of shkoyichgeben occurred.
Bidieved: If you are chasidish, you can have it any time during the day, because, as the SHL'A famously said, "We are not aware that there are clocks in heaven."
Mehadrin: One should invite guests, wear a kittel, drink four cups of cranberry juice and remember to recite, "He oyf anya."
Mehadrin min hemehadrin: One should wear a belt with a large buckle instead of a gartel and the children should all wear their hats with new Native American names, like "Shlepping Ausvorf" or "Pear Fresser."
II
Mesoyreh: One must watch football to be truly yotzeh oynig yuntif.
Lechatchilah: One should be makpid to watch an entire football game, whether or not his wife needs help in the kitchen with loading the turkey in the oven.
Bidieved: If one can't watch the entire game, one should at least be sure to watch one Geico and one Budweiser commercial, and will be soymich on poskim who hold that this is the minimum choyv to be mekayim the mitzvah.
Mehadrin: Tzadikim should go the football game itself, and it is mutar to pay one Shabbos meal's worth to purchase the tickets.
Mehadrin min hamehadrin: One should jump from the stands and run down the 50-yard line. If security tackles you before you get to the field, you're not yoytzeh yidai chavoosoy.
III
Mesoyreh: One should be makdim all his neighbors besayfah poonim yoofis.
Lechatchilah: One should say "gobble gobble" to at least two different neighbors. This must be done by day, as the ness of shkoyichgeben happened during the day.
Bidieved: If one is tired from shlepping the turkey all the way from the store, into the car, up the steps, onto the counter, one is allowed to say "gobble" to one neighbor.
Mehadrin: One should insert "gobble" into his sentences like the Smurfs put "smurf" into their sentences.
Mehadrin min hamehadrin: One should say nothing but "gobble" all day, while bobbing his head back and forth, waddling and birthing turkey eggs.
IV
Mesoyreh: The Korban Turkey should be eaten on the last Thursday of choydish November.

AOK: GRATITUDE THOUGHT OF THE DAY
Submitted by A.F. of Far Rockaway
In the zechus of a refuah shleima for Yechiel Yitzchak ben Leah When I put my children on the school bus in the morning I always say thank you to the bus driver and wish the driver a nice day. Action: Thank someone sincerely for doing something so little (like driving your kids to school) and does so carefully and safely.
AOK Days of Gratitude Initiative; Response Requested
We are working together until channukah to develop and flex our kindness muscles by expressing deep heartfelt thanks.
Who do you want to thank and how? We will "Post and Pass" your great ideas to inspire others. AOK will share one entry per day as a suggestion of who might deserve thanks. That "Day of Gratitude" will be dedicated in the merit of your choice. Click here to email your suggestion. www.AreWeDoingAOK.com Tracking Gratitude I keep a 'blessings' journal where I simply list those people and things that I am grateful for in my life. Much of the time, I carry it in my purse to make notes even when I'm not at home. Sometimes when I think of a person I'd like to thank, I make a note of it, including a nice way to express my gratitude. If I don't write it down, it will never happen. As the journal gets full, it's fun to look back and see all the ways I've been blessed. It's easy to feel gratitude when you see your life in those terms. Example:
Day One - Shabbat November 19, 2011 · Rabbi, you always connect the Shabbos d'var Torah with what's going on in the news. It really makes me reflect on life. Thank you for sharing it with us. Suggested by S.A NYC In the merit of a shidduch for Shira Michal bas Feiga Blima Can you relate? Don't hesitate. This Shabbos thank a rabbi, community leader or person you respect for inspiring you to greater heights!
Let's treasure the moments of our lives and "celebrate" them by giving thanks to the many people, family, friends, employees, helpers and strangers who enhance our lives in so many ways every single day. Expressing sincere appreciation makes an impact on three different fronts: - It uplifts the one you are thanking by acknowledging how meaningful they are.
- It makes you happy to positively affect others.
- It brings a yeshua in whose merit you dedicate the thanks.
Who in your life deserves gratitude? Share your ideas with AOK to inspire others to do the same. We will post it for a day of gratitude. That "Day of Gratitude" will be dedicated in the merit of your choice. Click here to email your suggestions. www.AreWeDoingAOK.com CLICK HERE FOR MORE
GHETTO PARSHAH
PARSHAT TOLDOS
In this weeks parsha, parshat Toldot, we find the story of the twins Yaakov and Eisav and the selling of the first-born rights.
We see: " וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂו אֶל יַעֲקֹב הַלְעִיטֵנִי נָא מִן הָאָדֹם הָאָדֹם הַזֶּה כִּי עָיֵף אָנֹכִי " (Vayomer Esav el Yaakov Hali'taini na min ha-adom ha-adom ha-ze Ki Ayeif Anochi) 'And Esav said to Yaakov, please pour to me some of that red-porridge because I am so tired' First off, why was Esav tired? Secondly, what the heezy is this all about? Esav is called in the Torah, אִישׁ יֹדֵעַ צַיִד אִישׁ שָׂדֶה (ish yodea tzayid, ish sade)- He's a man who knows how to hunt, a man of the field. While Yaakov is called in the Torah, אִישׁ תָּם יֹשֵׁב אֹהָלִים (ish tam, yosheiv ohalim)- a simplistic man who sits in tents. We have 2 very different personalities that emerged from one holy womb. Even while in the womb our Rabbis discuss their differences in nature. We learn that when Rivka (their mother) would pass a shul or synagogue, Yaakov would get antsy and excited in her womb and when she'd pass a place of idolatry and worship, Esav would get antsy and excited. We see these two different children. When you look at the beginning of the descriptions of the children, It first explains who they are and how they live and Then - what they do, their job, the way they spend their time If so, Esav is: a man who knows how to hunt (who he is) and spends his time in the feild (hunting, worshipping nature) While Yaakov is: a man who is simplistic (who he is) and spends his time in tents (learning Torah with Rabbis). It's mighty interesting indeed to note that these two very different individuals emerged from the same womb. Nature vs. nurture is a seriously fascinating concept to study- the development of a person must have another element, such as a G-dly touch. Esav spent his his time in the fields hunting, fine that's obvious. But as a person he is called an "Ish Yodea Tazayid"- a man who knows how to hunt. Meaning, that's who he is. A conniving, deceptive and animalistic person who doesn't just hunt, but "knows how to hunt". He is narcissistic and uses people and gets whatever he wants, he knows how to work his goodies- you know what I'm sayin? He comes home from a long day of animal bloodshed and wants some of the red soup Yaakov was cooking.
Now, Yaakov was cooking red soup as a meal during the Shiva (7 days of mourning) when Avraham passed away (his granpa). It's crazy that Esav is a red head, he works with blood, and he wants red soup. Red, red, red! This reminds me of something very interesting. Sorry to get all girly girl on ya'll but it's a cool parallel. When I get a manicure, I choose a color. I chose a grey last week. Ever since I chose that grey, I realized most of the outfits I put together had a grey involved or a lighter blue. It scared me as it made me realize that, what we have around us, the things, influences, even colors around us, influence our decisions. Esav come back from bloodshed and wants "Ha'adom Ha'adom" the really red-red stuff that Yaakov was cooking! Our surrounding subconsciously affect even our own decisions, we gotsta be mad careful homes! Ok fine, he comes in and wants some red soup, why? because he's so "tired" from hunting so much: כִּי עָיֵף אָנֹכִי (Ki ayeif anochi) Because I am tired. But a bit vieter (further), it says: וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂו הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי הוֹלֵךְ לָמוּת (Vayomer Esav Hinei Anochi Holech Lamut)- And Esav said, Here I am going to die. Not so fast senor Esav, you went from "tired" to "going to die"?

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.
The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week. If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us. We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
