AN ODE TO SARAH: OP-EDs
and FOLLOWUP

Over the weekend, my mailbox filled with letters inquiring whether it was their employers about which I wrote. The letters represented almost 20 different Orthodox organizations. One might call the dearth of women in leadership positions pervasive. I did not spill the beans, but if the shoe fits, he can put it in his pipe and smoke it. (I love mixing metaphors).

As I mentioned, at one point, the pioneers in the baby boom generation worked hard to break the glass ceiling, they had to choose career over family/children. Generation X tried doing career and family and neither employers were happy, nor kids, or maybe, more accurately, both employers and kids were semi-happy, but many women I spoke with saw the glass half-empty with regards to work and children. As a result of the dissatisfaction or semi-satisfaction, many women I spoke with later ditched their careers in favor of family life. This is probably why it is hard for Mr. President to find a pool of career women from which to hire.

Generation Y learned from Generation X. Many decided to go back to traditional female jobs as educators and in therapies, careers which were compatible with family life. Their salaries barely pay their tuition bills, and they carry the heavy burden with their husbands of the toll yeshiva tuitions and an Orthodox life in general exacts. Here, too, is the reason Mr. President will not be able to find a pool of qualified career women from which to fill his positions.

 Mother's New Little Helper

By PAMELA PAUL, NY Times

THE indiscriminate worries and ruminations that churn through the mind of Cheryl Downs McCoy are matters most working mothers have rifled through at some point: "I need to call that guy about fixing the car. I think I've run out my daughter's favorite snack. Should I change the batteries in the smoke alarm?"

Mother's little helper of the new millennium may in fact be the sleeping pill - a prescription not likely to inspire a jaunty pop song anytime soon. Nearly 3 in 10 American women fess up to using some kind of sleep aid at least a few nights a week, according to "Women and Sleep," a 2007 study by the National Sleep Foundation, a nonprofit research group.

One of the cruel jokes of motherhood is that the sleeplessness of pregnancy, followed by the sleeplessness generated by an infant (a period in which a staggering - truly - 84 percent of women experience insomnia), is not followed by a makeup period of rest. It is merely the setup for what can become a permanent modus operandi.

Dr. Collop points to the persistent creep of technology into the after-hours, a time once reserved for physical and psychological winding down.

"There's always the worry another e-mail has come in," she said. "Just the light from the electronic book or the iPad screen is stimulating."

According to IMS Health, a health care consulting firm in Danbury, Conn., the use of prescription sleep aids among women peaks from 40 to 59. Last year, the firm said, 15,473,000 American women between those ages got a prescription (overwhelmingly for Zolpidem, the generic form of Ambien) to help them sleep, nearly twice the number of men in that age group.

A C.E.O.'s Support System, a k a Husband

Here's to Mark Rometty.

Mr. Rometty is a principal investor in the Bam Oil Company, where he's listed as treasurer and secretary and, when I called, answered the phone. He's also married to Virginia Rometty, the new C.E.O.-designate and first woman tapped to head I.B.M., a company that not only ranks 18th in the Fortune 500, but stands as a symbol of American managerial prowess. Acquaintances say the intensely private Mr. Rometty deserves tremendous credit for pursuing a career that gave him the time and flexibility to support his wife's ascension to the pinnacle of global business - as, for that matter, do the vast majority of C.E.O. spouses of both genders. Still, the C.E.O. husband remains a rarity in American business.

The Romettys aren't the only couple reluctant to discuss the husband's role in his wife's success. There's still a social stigma for the stay-at-home or less successful husband that women don't face. And management experts say that that has to change if women are going to be represented in the top jobs at a level commensurate with their numbers and talent.

Asked at a Barnard College conference what men could do to help advance women's leadership, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, a professor at Harvard Business School and author of the landmark "Men and Women of the Corporation," answered, "The laundry."

Who is the Aging Orthodox Population

By Rivki Rosenwald Esq, C.L.C

Every 6 year old can't wait to turn 7. Every 7 year old , 8. Eight year old, 9. Clearly, they are not concerned with aging.

Hit sixteen and the desire for a driving license has kids chomping at the bit to attain age seventeen.

The brakes get pressed a bit as one rounds the corner to the '20s. They start to fee l the pressure to grow up and be more serious about life, and this gets kids a little shaky.

Yet approaching 21, the benefits it brings, has people excited to turn 21 and they are feeling good to go again.

So who is feeling they are aging?!

  • Thirty year olds are busy being parents, professionals, or couples they have no time to dote on aging.
  • Forty year olds certainly address it a bit, but less so in this day and age.
  • Baby Boomers are progressing in years, studies show within the next 10-20 years the elderly population will triple. Nevertheless, 50 is the new 30 so people in that category feel younger than ever.
  • Even people who are moving on in years feel more optimistic that people are living longer and remaining healthier.

Sadly, it's the Orthodox/Machmir 23-29 year olds who are feeling "old"!

The pressure to meet the right person, yesterday, is driving them crazy. The feeling they are too dependent on other people to make it happen has made them more fearful and worried. Should they be living the concerns of the elderly?!

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.

To volunteer, please contact:
