PREMIUM PROPERTIES IN ISRAEL FOR SALE OR RENTAL

I BELIEVE
By:  Rabbi Leo Zisman
Critiqued by: Suri Stern

This past week, the parsha begins with G-d telling Abraham:  Lech Lecha, literally Go to Yourself.  Rashi expounds on these words telling us that it was for Abraham's good and pleasure.  The Tosefos Hashalem expounds are these two words by saying that for a person's good is not always for his pleasure, and what might be for a person's pleasure, might not always be for his good.  In this case, G-d was telling Abraham that his leaving would be for his good and for his pleasure.

It just so happened, that at the time that I was asked to prepare this shiur on Lech Lecha, I was given Rabbi Zisman's book, I Believe, and, as always, the two were meant to be.

Avraham was tried with 10 tests.  Throughout Rabbi Zisman's book, he too was tested.  Without revealing too much, he found a way to keep his tefilin so that he and those around him could observe the mitzvah in Auschwitz.

What is amazing about this book is that it does not end merely by informing the reader that he survived, but also, how he has flourished since the war.  It took me some time to understand why Rabbi Zisman added the last third of the book into the story, but then I had an epiphany, that completed my understanding of the meaning of I Believe.

There were many who survived the Holocaust losing their belief in G-d.  It takes a strained stretch of the imagination when you are being tested as Rabbi Zisman was to believe that it was for his good, albeit not for his pleasure.  A great strain on belief.  Yet he survived, and his belief in G-d survived and thrived, for the last third of the book, I Believe, is meant to be a testimony to his continued belief in G-d.

So often people turn to G-d in times of need.  So often those who succeed will say "kochi v'etzem yadi", that it was my wisdom, my knowledge, my strength  that made me succeed, I have no need for G-d anymore.  Not so Rabbi Zisman.  He reveals to the reader how each step of his success was from G-d.  His business decisions are guided by Torah principles.

It dawned on me, that this book, I Believe, is a continuation of a well known verse in The Diary of Anne Frank.  At the end, the very last passage, Anne Frank affirms:  "Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart."
"Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!"

These are lessons learned by Abraham's last test, the sacrifice of Isaac.  The Jerusalem Gemarah sets forth that after G-d told Abraham to hold off sacrificing Isaac, Abraham looked up and saw a ram whose horns were stuck in a bush.  He watched as the ram became stuck and then freed, stuck and then freed.  He saw that the bush was analogous to the exiles under foreign kingdoms that the Jews would have to endure.  Abraham turns to G-d and says:

Hayihiyeh ken l'olam/will it be this way forever?  Will the Jews have to endure foreign rule forever?

G-d replies, the Jews will be redeemed with the horn of this ram.

As long as the ram was stuck in the bush, he could not actualize his potential as a sacrifice to G-d.

So too, Bnei Yisrael.  As long as we are stuck in galus/exile, it is difficult to maximize our potential, dedicate ourselves fully to the work of G-d, it is why we so fervently pray that G-d redeem us quickly.

WE BELIEVE.

Beyond the Kardashian Wedding; Some Words on the Essence of Marriage

By: Shira Dicker

There are a number of things about contemporary pop culture I will never understand. One is the appeal of so-called Reality Television. The second, closely-related, is the public's interest in the stars of this realm, chiefly the insipid bunch known as the Kardashians.

I'll skip the feminist rhetoric about how heinous these young women are as role models for girls and the moral finger-wagging about the shallow, mega-materialistic values they hold. I'll even mute my own outrage at the media for being as fascinated with them as they are with themselves. What astonishes me beyond belief is the press coverage that the $10 mil coronation wedding received and now, 72 days later, its unraveling.

While initially grumbling to myself that I picked a doozy of a day to put in face-time at shul, I found my devotion rewarded a short while later. There was an aufruf taking place for Elana Berkowitz -- the daughter of Dina Rosenfeld and Howard Berkowitz, one of Minyan M'at's founding families -- and her fiance. I grabbed a siddur and a seat. As my nose, toes and fingers thawed, I was treated to an exquisitely-wrought address by the bride-to-be's father on the essence of marriage, that is, life-long partnership.

For those who were married and those who were about to be married and those who wished to be married, Howard Berkowitz presented a vision of this partnership's potential. Here is an excerpt:

Elana, Ed, on your e-invitations to the wedding you had an image of a two-seater bicycle with the statement "we have decided to go tandem for life."  The word "conjugal" in Latin means "to be yoked together"- to go tandem.  Whether it is side-by-side or fore-and-aft, you have decided to make the commitment to become sustaining companions for life, to pull together to get wherever you are going, to accomplish collaboratively whatever in this world you set out to do.  This corresponds to the Rabbinic ideal of marriage as the relationship of re'im ahuvim, loving friends.

Pursuing Self-Improvement,
at the Risk of Self-Acceptance

By ALINA TUGEND, NYTimes
SOMETIMES I get tired of always striving to be better - of knowing there are ways, endless ways, I can improve myself or members of my immediate family.

When I feel really down, I think of how far we have to go. We could, for example, start our own vegetable garden, use that homegrown produce to make delicious and healthy meals and compost the leftovers in the composter we don't yet have. Then we could turn off - or even throw out - the television and read to each other from the classics while sitting in our hand-carved chairs.

It's not going to happen. Not that any one of those ambitions is impossible. They are just not a priority. Still, at various times they feel as if they should be (except maybe the hand-carved chairs).

Self-improvement is a deeply embedded American trait, something other cultures find both admirable and amusing. The notion that we can constantly make ourselves better is, in theory, a great idea.

But when does it become too much?

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
