Record Breaking and Destructive Snow Storm
The Governers of New York and New Jersey
have declared a state of emergency as  a result of rare early snow storms that came down hard and heavy with winds reaching as much as 60m.p.h.

Speaking with relatives in Teaneck, NJ, as we on Long Island were blanketed with 4 inches by 9pm last, with snow still falling, Teaneck was up to 6 inches and falling.

A doctor in the religious Teaneck community

suffered the falling of one tree on his home, and the falling of another tree on his car, with a final act of destruction that interfered with his electricity.

Nearly 2 million people have lost power across the region.  President Obama had to comfort the children who had to cover their costumes on their visit with snow suits, standing outside in the frigid temps. and bad weather.

  Experiencing Las Vegas, in Queens
By DAN BILEFSKY, NY Times
The new Resorts World casino opening Friday, with its flashing multicolored ceiling lights, electronic baccarat tables presided over by robotic dealers and a fake twinkling night sky created from satellite images of the sky over 42nd Street, seeks to offer a Las Vegas interpretation of Times Square.

But the casino's main innovation is that it is reachable by subway from the real Times Square.

It is New York City's first casino - or racino, because it is connected to the Aqueduct racetrack in South Ozone Park, Queens - featuring 5,000 video gambling terminals and electronic table games, including craps and a popular Asian dice game known as sic bo; restaurants like Chinese dim sum and the Stage Deli; and 6,500 parking spots.

The casino, which was approved by the Legislature in 2001 only to be delayed by false starts and influence peddling, has already stirred deep divisions. Some critics say it comes perilously close to breaching constitutional limits on gambling, while others predict it will prompt a deluge of social ills, like divorce, gambling addiction or suicide.

But supporters, including the owners of the casino and legislators in Albany, say that casino gambling has been available in the metropolitan area for years, and that this casino will help keep jobs and some of that revenue in New York.

"This is an opportunity for New Yorkers to have a Vegas-like experience without having to leave the city," said Michael Speller, the president of Resorts World Casino New York City, who started off as a blackjack dealer in his native London when he was 18.

Joy in Russia as a Symbol of the Arts Reopens     By ELLEN BARRY and SOPHIA KISHKOVSKY, NY Times
MOSCOW - The interior of the newly restored Bolshoi Theater was resplendent with sable and décolletage and claret-colored damask on Friday, as Russia's new aristocrats leaned out from their balconies with opera glasses, hoping for a glimpse into the czar's box, where the president was sitting.

But if you wanted to understand the significance of the event, it was more useful to stand outside, where a few hundred people not lucky enough to get tickets were watching the gala on two large screens. It was a cold, miserable night, and the whole thing was covered live on television, but they stood there anyway, and when columns of ballerinas appeared to the adagio from "Swan Lake," there were audible sighs of delight.

The reopening of the Bolshoi is freighted with political significance; the six-year restoration has turned the clock back to the late 19th century, replacing thousands of Soviet hammer-and-sickle signs with imperial double-headed eagles. More simply, though, it fills a vacuum in a country besotted by art.

American-Israeli Held in Egypt Is Released By ISABEL KERSHNER

JERUSALEM - Ilan Grapel, an American-Israeli citizen who had been held in Egypt since June, charged with spying for Israel, was released on Thursday in exchange for 25 Egyptians held in Israeli jails.

Mr. Grapel, 27, a law student from Queens, was flown from Cairo to Ben-Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv in the early evening, accompanied by Israeli officials. The released prisoners were transferred to Egypt through the Taba border crossing around the same time.

After arriving in Israel, Mr. Grapel was driven to Jerusalem to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Officials said that Mr. Grapel was expected to leave Israel for the United States on Friday. Representative Gary L. Ackerman of New York, a Democrat from Queens, was in Israel "to bring Ilan Grapel home," according to a statement from the congressman's office.

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
