  AMENDED VIRAL EMAIL
This email went around like crazy this week,
I have amended it:

Original
Dear G-d,

In the past month I blew a ram's horn, ate a fish head, swung a
chicken around my head, dressed in a suit and sneakers, then wore a white
robe, prayed and fasted for 25 hours, built and ate in a tent with a
bamboo ceiling (sometimes in the rain), spent 3 consecutive days with
my in laws and three more with my parents, walked around with a palm branch and a
citrus fruit, whipped willow branches on the floor,

 New Study Characterizes Agunot

October 25, 2011

Submitted by our very own YOEL MOSKOWITZ from JTA.org.

NEW YORK (JTA) - Most agunot are younger woman with children who are trying to leave a first marriage, according to a new study.

The findings, which identified 462 instances of agunah over a five-year period, suggest that there has been an increase in cases of Jewish women being refused a religious divorce, or get, by their husbands while the rate of case resolution has been on the decline. These "chained women" have little money and are not aware of the resources available to them.

More than 70 community-based and social service-related organizations across North America were polled in the census released earlier this month.  The study was spearheaded by Barbara Zakheim, founder of the Greater Washington Jewish Coalition, and polling was conducted pro bono by the Mellman Group.

PARSHAT NOACH

As much as Mick Jagger may know how to "walk this way", Noach walked THE way.

Our holy parsha begins by describing Noach as follows:

                                 "אִישׁ צַדִּיק תָּמִים הָיָה בְּדֹרֹתָיו אֶת הָאֱ־לֹהִים הִתְהַלֶּךְ נֹחַ"

Ish Tza-deek Tamim Haya B'dorotav Et Ha-Elokim Hithalaich Noach

A righteous man, he was perfect in his generation and Noach walked with G-d

Now woa, Noach seems like Da Man, the IT dude, the Homie of Homies.

But hold up a sec, what does it mean that he was considered perfect.. in HIS GENERATION? As opposed to whose generation? Also, what does walking with G-d entail?

I'm super excited for this bad mama jama ghetto parsha..... Hope ya digg it!

Noach was a shtark individual who was chosen to be saved from the oncoming flood. He was considered to be the holiest of his generation at the time to merit such a sweet deal.

But- what is this "in His Generation" talk about? Why wasn't he just called a Perfect Guy period?

Our Rabbinical commentators, and RASHI- famous Torah commentator- say that, Noach was considered to be the most pious and righteous of his generation at the time. Although, if Noach lived in the time of Avraham, he would be considered as a normal dude, while Avraham would be considered the most pious.

But why would we say this? What can we learn from this detail?

Firstly, Avraham was a very very holy man, especially as he represents our 1st forefather, so it'd be perdy hard to compare.

Secondly, the story of Avraham, and his own realization of The Creator being G-d and his desire to do the right thing, and to spread G-d recognition all occurred AFTER the story of Noach. Actually, it occurs in the next parsha (hope I didn't jus give dat away and you still hit up my Ghetto Parsha for next week).

This idea, that the story of the righteous Avraham occurred AFTER Noach yet they are compared during Noach's time, shows us that we cannot be all high and mighty in the present when the future is so bright... I gotta wear shades. We need to be humble and look forward to the future. Life develops, people grow, and as each generation goes, a new one comes, plus the only way to go is up- soaring higher and higher. It's not enough to think that the present rocks and it's all about the now. Let's drink and go nuts for tomorrow we die? NO WAY! It's about the future. It's all about the future!

TUCKED AWAY IN A CORNER IN A LAWRENCE

Snow is coming this Saturday, no worries.

I know a perfect place to stay warm and weather it out.

IT'S ALL ABOUT LIFE...THE RESTAURANT.

It was my dear friend Judi's birthday. We've been friends for 30 years, waiting on Broadway for the Central Manhattan bus to pick us up.

I was hungry...ok famished. We started with a complex bowl of pea soup...really complex. The kind of complex that comes with slow cooking and great spices, which add huge amounts of flavor without the fat or calories.

Start with produce and ingredients that arrive daily...and just imagine.

It is a fantasy menu. The birthday girl was on a diet, and I needed comfort food. Food choices include an extensive salad bar, fro yo, extensive coffee bar, soups, paninis, wraps, cheese nachos with three dipping sauces was my starter, avocado/Portobello burger, eggplant parm, chicken parm-the best pseudo chicken I have ever tasted, omelets AND CREPES GALORE. You can have fruit so I did just on top of a grand ole Belgian waffle with Nutella, berries and whipped cream. I told you I was hungry and I wanted comfort food, but the birthday girl stayed within her points, darn.

This was my fantasy menu. I can be good with a touch of bad. Then tonight, I put the kids to bed, cleaned my chickens for shabbos, called my friend Tzip, and I said come on girl, shabbos is coming and it's Rosh Chodesh, time for just a little time out celebration for the girls, so we did LIFE and we had a smoothie with a fro yo plop in it sprinkled with blueberries, and finished it off with a tea, and there was no greater joy in life at that moment than LIFE. At dusk they dim the overhead lights, turn on the multi-colored psychedelic lights, and you feel kinda clubish without leavin' town...great music and ambience.

Located in the Life gym, which used to be Hollywood Atrium, right behind the Lawrence station accessed via Mott Avenue.

Great "hang" spot, good for your body and great for your spirit, great for your wallet and a superb addition to the Five Towns dining scene.

THEY ARE OPEN dawn to dusk except shabbos. CHECK IT OUT THIS MOTZEI SHABBOS. Enjoy!!

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
