KOL HANIARIM

By: Lenore Suri Davis

"It Takes A Village to Raise A Child"

"If You Build It, They Will Come"

So I have.  Six years ago, when I first started

my website, I spoke with top leaders in the community,

I told the business leaders, that I thought that a depression

was coming and while the economy was booming, the

community should set aside funds for a community

endowment for our local yeshivas.  The businessmen

guffawed and reminded me that unemployment would have to reach 10% to be considered a depression.

It has come to pass.

The Rabbis told me that they had just attended a

seminar by a major Orthodox institution on the subject, and that the institution was coming up with

a solution to the problem.

They haven't even come close.

The Annual Aliyah on behalf of minor children

is on Simchat Torah, but how can there be Simchat

Torah when so many of our Orthodox and other

children are not learning Torah because their parents

are being strangled by yeshiva tuitions and have chosen

to place them in public schools.

What does it say about our local schools that there

are now several huge buses picking up our children

at 6:30am to ship them to out of town yeshivas

that are half the price of our local 5T yeshivas.

I received a lot of slack from my readers when I told

them to protest high tuitions by withholding payments

to force the local yeshivas to face what the yeshivas

in Manhattan, Riverdale and other RESPONSIBLE

yeshivas have done...CREATE AN ENDOWMENT

and properly staff it so that future generations will

no longer have to buckle under the tuition load.

I have created YeshivaEndowmentServices.com

which is an endomwent program in a box.

Creating an endowment can be daunting and expensive.

YES! has brought together the right legal/financial/marketing personnel

reasonably and efficiently.

HIGIYAH Z'MAN.  THE TIME HAS COME.

When your children go under the talis for

their aliyah this week, and money is pledged

for said aliyah, make that check out to

Yeshiva Endowment Services, and mail to

1024 Broadway, Suite 6

Woodmere, New York 11598

The Endowment will grow for generations to come.

You can dedicate the endowment to any 5T or

Far Rockaway Yeshiva, or for the general fund.

For more information, email me at:

Lenore@yes.com

or call:  (516)596-8849

IT IS TIME FOR THE CHILDREN TO

BE HEARD.

THE RELEASE OF GILAD SHALIT

By: Rabbi Heshie Billet of YIW

Yesterday's return of Gilad Shalit after 5 1/2 years of incarceration in a Hamas dungeon in Gaza is something we have been praying for since the day he was brutally kidnapped. I do not believe that there is a single Jew or non Jew with a sense of compassion and a value system of decency who is not happy on a personal level for both Gilad and his family.  Because of the graciousness of the YIW membership and administration, I am privileged to be in Israel for the last days of Chol Hamoed Succot and for Shemini Atzeret and was therefore privy to experience the festive mood in Israel as his family, friends, neighbors and the nation celebrated the return of a lost son.

So if you have the patience to continue reading, I would like to share with you my feelings about this event. The views stated here are the opinions of someone who never risked his life for Am Yisrael or Medinat Yisrael.  I have neither served in the IDF nor have any of my children served in the IDF.  At the appropriate time, I have 5 Israeli grandsons who I hope will be soldiers in the IDF. Therefore, I certainly recognize that perhaps silence at my end is more appropriate than voicing a point of view on this latest prisoner exchange. Hence, I will try to present some objective facts and share the opinions of some Israelis who did serve in the IDF and whose views I find compelling.

Once again, no one with a heart of flesh can deny being moved to tears of joy for Gilad Shalit and his family. The TV images of the reunion with his parents are very powerful. BUT  there is another perspective on this both qualitatively and quantitatively disproportionate prisoner exchange.

CHILDREN'S SAFETY OVER SIMCHAT TORAH

By Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum, Rabbi of YILC

Dear Parents;

The arrival of Simchat Torah brings joy and celebration for young and old.  Along with all the correct ways of celebrating Simchat Torah, teens sometimes stray into activities that are unbecoming and even harmful. They cannot be expected to celebrate only in a manner of Simcha Shel Mitzvah if we don't offer our guidance. The care and attention that our young adults need and deserve should be increased and heightened for the duration of Shemini Atzeret, Simchat Torah and Shabbat.

WOODMERE LANES SPECIALS

OISVORF RUV:SIMCHAS TOIRAH

After examining  the many esrogim people were flashing, and as I've done in past years, I was klerring (thinking)  about  why and how we've become trained, conditioned  and suckered  into spending a small fortune while purchasing the most bulbous and veiny esrog (as the heylige gemorah recommends.) Would you buy any other fruit for even half price if it had varicose veins or acne? Let's examine the esrog: what the hec is it if not a lemon?  It looks like a lemon, smells like a lemon and hec, even tastes like a lemon. Shtelt zich di shaylo (the question arises): why does it cost as much as a nice dinner for two at the Prime Grill? Listen to me and you'll save yourself a bundle. Buy a lemon, efsher even a spare; two for a total of 50 cents. Give it a few klep (bangs) with a mallet - presto- you have an esrog. Isn't an esrog but a lemon with acne? And isn't the Yom Tov of Succois all about banging?

 HURRICANE SHIRA

By: Shira Dicker

DOUBLE-EDGED DREAM I  stayed awake as long as I could, close to 3:30 a.m. listening to the rapid-fire Hebrew patter of the Ynet anchors. Gilad Shalit was passed from Hamas to the Egyptian authorities. The International Red Cross was monitoring the progress of the transaction. Shalit was met by an IDF representative. His family was gathering. Medical personnel were standing by.

Unable to stay awake, I fell asleep before Shalit entered Israel and was reunited with his family though the photographs of the Shalit family waiting for their son made my heart overflow with prayer that he arrive whole in spirit, body and mind.

Declared healthy, this young former captive is thin and pale and weak...no surprise for someone held in a Hamas cell for five years. Further medical tests will probe his fitness further. There is a limp, possibly from the confrontation that led to his capture. Something appears to have happened to one of his hands. More insults to his body and mind might be revealed.

Over the past week, since the deal was announced, I've read pundits and predictions on all sides of this terrible negotiation. Stating the obvious, the prospect of terrorists being released is not only galling on a moral level but carries significant risk. I cannot think of anything to add to the debate other than expressions of sympathy for the families of those killed in terrorist attacks. Whatever they say or think is wholly justified. The murderers of their loved ones have gone free together with Shalit.

Listening to the news last night I found myself slipping into a realm of magical thinking, recalling my childhood belief in the possibility of Biblical miracles, the kind wrought for Israel by God. I considered a Jericho-like tumbling of walls, a plague, a brilliant military strategy worthy of King David dealing immediate justice to those released killers. I summoned up Samson in the temple of the Philistines, taking down the entire murderous nation before I realized that Samson's heroic act was one of martyrdom.

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
