KOL HANIARIM

By: Lenore Suri Davis

"It Takes A Village to Raise A Child"

"If You Build It, They Will Come"

So I have.  Six years ago, when I first started

my website, I spoke with top leaders in the community,

I told the business leaders, that I thought that a depression

was coming and while the economy was booming, the

community should set aside funds for a community

endowment for our local yeshivas.  The businessmen

guffawed and reminded me that unemployment would have to reach 10% to be considered a depression.

It has come to pass.

The Rabbis told me that they had just attended a

seminar by a major Orthodox institution on the subject, and that the institution was coming up with

a solution to the problem.

They haven't even come close.

The Annual Aliyah on behalf of minor children

is on Simchat Torah, but how can there be Simchat

Torah when so many of our Orthodox and other

children are not learning Torah because their parents

are being strangled by yeshiva tuitions and have chosen

to place them in public schools.

What does it say about our local schools that there

are now several huge buses picking up our children

at 6:30am to ship them to out of town yeshivas

that are half the price of our local 5T yeshivas.

I received a lot of slack from my readers when I told

them to protest high tuitions by withholding payments

to force the local yeshivas to face what the yeshivas

in Manhattan, Riverdale and other RESPONSIBLE

yeshivas have done...CREATE AN ENDOWMENT

and properly staff it so that future generations will

no longer have to buckle under the tuition load.

I have created YeshivaEndowmentServices.com

which is an endomwent program in a box.

Creating an endowment can be daunting and expensive.

YES! has brought together the right legal/financial/marketing personnel

reasonably and efficiently.

HIGIYAH Z'MAN.  THE TIME HAS COME.

When your children go under the talis for

their aliyah this week, and money is pledged

for said aliyah, make that check out to

Yeshiva Endowment Services, and mail to

1024 Broadway, Suite 6

Woodmere, New York 11598

The Endowment will grow for generations to come.

You can dedicate the endowment to any 5T or

Far Rockaway Yeshiva, or for the general fund.

For more information, email me at:

Lenore@yes.com

or call:  (516)596-8849

IT IS TIME FOR THE CHILDREN TO

BE HEARD.

Hamas Frees Israeli Soldier as Prisoner Swap Begins
By ETHAN BRONNER and STEPHEN FARRELL, NY Times
JERUSALEM - An Israeli soldier held for more than five years by the militant Palestinian group Hamas was traded on Tuesday for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails in an elaborate exchange that could shake up regional politics.

Buses containing the Palestinian prisoners - the first group of what will eventually be more than 1,000 - made their way into Egypt and from there to the West Bank and Gaza Strip where jubilant relatives awaited and celebrations were planned.

The soldier, Sergeant First Class Gilad Shalit, was taken from Gaza, where he had been held since being abducted in a cross-border raid in 2006, into Egypt and from there to Israel, where he was given a quick medical check and declared in good health.

Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky Passes Away

Bnei Brak is preparing for the levaya of Rebitzen Batsheva Kanievsky OB"M, 79, who was nifteres on Shabbos afternoon, collapsing while reciting Tehillim at 13:30. She was found in cardiac arrest. Efforts to resuscitate here were unsuccessful. The rebitzen was the wife of Maran HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita and a daughter of Posek HaDor Maran HaGaon Yosef Sholom Elyashiv Shlita.

It was reported by Ichud Hatzolah member Ze'evi Tepper, among the first on the scene, that the Rav opened the door to let them in, and as they began evaluating the situation vis-à-vis the rebitzen, the Rav told them "Bracha V'Hatzlocha".

PM NETANYAHU: I FEEL YOUR PAIN

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu sent a letter, Monday, to those who lost loved ones in terrorist attacks and now face the prospect of seeing their murderers go free in exchange for Gilad Shalit.

"I write to you with a heavy heart. I understand and feel your pain," the prime minister wrote. Netanyahu lost a brother, Yoni, in the Entebbe rescue operation in 1976.

"I know that this is emotionally difficult, that the wound of bereavement has been reopened in recent days, that thoughts of it give you no rest," he continued. "I faced many inner debates during the entire negotiation process to return the soldier Gilad Shalit from captivity, and you were in my thoughts the entire time.

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
