KOL HANIARIM By: Lenore Suri Davis "It Takes A Village to Raise A Child" "If You Build It, They Will Come" So I have. Six years ago, when I first started my website, I spoke with top leaders in the community, I told the business leaders, that I thought that a depression was coming and while the economy was booming, the community should set aside funds for a community endowment for our local yeshivas. The businessmen guffawed and reminded me that unemployment would have to reach 10% to be considered a depression. It has come to pass. The Rabbis told me that they had just attended a seminar by a major Orthodox institution on the subject, and that the institution was coming up with a solution to the problem. They haven't even come close. The Annual Aliyah on behalf of minor children is on Simchat Torah, but how can there be Simchat Torah when so many of our Orthodox and other children are not learning Torah because their parents are being strangled by yeshiva tuitions and have chosen to place them in public schools. What does it say about our local schools that there are now several huge buses picking up our children at 6:30am to ship them to out of town yeshivas that are half the price of our local 5T yeshivas. I received a lot of slack from my readers when I told them to protest high tuitions by withholding payments to force the local yeshivas to face what the yeshivas in Manhattan, Riverdale and other RESPONSIBLE yeshivas have done...CREATE AN ENDOWMENT and properly staff it so that future generations will no longer have to buckle under the tuition load. I have created YeshivaEndowmentServices.com which is an endomwent program in a box. Creating an endowment can be daunting and expensive. YES! has brought together the right legal/financial/marketing personnel reasonably and efficiently. HIGIYAH Z'MAN. THE TIME HAS COME. When your children go under the talis for their aliyah this week, and money is pledged for said aliyah, make that check out to Yeshiva Endowment Services, and mail to 1024 Broadway, Suite 6 Woodmere, New York 11598 The Endowment will grow for generations to come. You can dedicate the endowment to any 5T or Far Rockaway Yeshiva, or for the general fund. For more information, email me at: Lenore@yes.com or call: (516)596-8849 IT IS TIME FOR THE CHILDREN TO BE HEARD. -Suri

Protest This
By Joel Moskowitz
Pay attention to the protestors, all of them, whether from the Tea Party or the Occupy Wall Street groups. They are sending us loud messages; failure to heed their grievances will tear apart the fabric of our nation, already ebbing from class disparity, joblessness, hopelessness and pessimism. The politics of the groups may be different but the message is the same. Business as usual is over, the world has changed and we need adjust or all hell will break loose.
When the Tea Party started gathering steam and was the object of ridicule by many, I observed that ignoring a loud significant portion of the population is a mistake, even if their ideas seem out of the mainstream and to some ridiculous. And it was easy to downplay them; they seemed to be predominantly white, not too educated and outright hostile to government. Their influence however, is now very evident from the 2010 elections and from the current Republican presidential primary. Whether we like it or not, the Tea Party has changed politics in this country for the foreseeable future.
Occupy Wall Street is now in its infancy. Anyone who thinks they too will fade away because they are just a bunch of anarchists and loonies, beware. They are tapping into a not too small segment of the population who is becoming more and more hostile to Big Business. Because of the cozy inter-locking relationship between government and Big Business, hostility and cynicism towards government is growing too.

Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky Passes Away
Bnei Brak is preparing for the levaya of Rebitzen Batsheva Kanievsky OB"M, 79, who was nifteres on Shabbos afternoon, collapsing while reciting Tehillim at 13:30. She was found in cardiac arrest. Efforts to resuscitate here were unsuccessful. The rebitzen was the wife of Maran HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita and a daughter of Posek HaDor Maran HaGaon Yosef Sholom Elyashiv Shlita.
It was reported by Ichud Hatzolah member Ze'evi Tepper, among the first on the scene, that the Rav opened the door to let them in, and as they began evaluating the situation vis-à-vis the rebitzen, the Rav told them "Bracha V'Hatzlocha".

Joy!
By: Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum
There are numerous Minhagim regarding the Arba Minim and Hoshaanot according to the Ari Z"l that are followed and practice by hundreds of thousands of Jews around the world. The Ari Z"l's holiness was gained during his short life (38 years). Upon his holiness are built his name and stature as an authority to be reckoned with in Minhag and Halacha. How did the Ari Z"l become so holy? Was it his seclusion for many years while immersed in study? Others had similarly applied themselves to the study of Torah. What made the Ari Z"l unique? The answer was provided by the Ari Z"l himself. He once said that he had merited Ruach Hakodesh because he had always fulfilled Mitzvot with great joy, greater even than the joy to be had in Gan Eden.
Performance of a Mitzvah, the Chofetz Chaim said, is comparable to presenting before a great and powerful king or world-famous personality to perform a vital service in that person's interest. One who has such an opportunity and succeeds in their work senses a deep feeling of joy and fulfillment. Some people serve in some such capacity, professionally, on a regular basis. People who attain to such positions find their careers most rewarding in a non-material way. They experience joy and deep gratification. Their sense of purpose makes their very existence so meaningful. The media feature programs about people who have served kings, queens, presidents, etc. because they have had fascinating experiences and very positive feelings about the work to which they have dedicated their lives. This is how we should feel upon the successful performance of a Mitzvah. When we learn, when we Daven, because we are engaged with the Creator Himself, we are to be filled with joy.
In the Slabodka Yeshiva, Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel insisted on an atmosphere of joy. Joy, during study-time in the sharp, cutting examination and inquiry into every twist and turn in the Gemara. Joy was manifest on Shabbos and Yom Tov in the Yeshiva. A student of another Yeshiva once visited at Slabodka and met with Rav Nosson Tzvi. The Rosh Yeshiva had initially hoped that the young man would be a suitable travel partner for Rav Nosson Tzvi's own son who was to be traveling to Yeshivat Mir. After meeting with his young guest Rav Nosson Tzvi decided that his son should not travel with him. It was not that he wasn't a fine budding Torah scholar; he was. The matter that concerned Rav Nosson Tzvi was the fact that the boy did not have a sense of joy. There was no spark of Simcha about him. Without Simchah the young man may be lacking merit, Zechuyot. On a dangerous journey it is best to be accompanied by people who have Zechuyot.
We too, on our important journey, want Simchah to accompany us. "V`shibachtee Anee Et Hasimcha.", Shlomo Hamelech says. [Kohelet 8, 15] "Shevach" means praise. The visible praise of Simchah can be seen in all that Mitzvot and Maasim Tovim do to shape the happy, fulfilled Jewish man or woman. "V'hu Yilvenu Va`amalo". The "Amal" refers to the merit of so many good deeds. "Yilvenu" means that these merits will accompany us when we present before the Almighty after one hundred and twenty years. When our worldly journey draws to a close we will come before Hashem with all the meritorious achievements of our lifetime. If we did a Mitzvah with joy, that Mitzvah and the joy with which it was performed will appear with us before God. The Simchah will present before God because He doesn't just want to know if we did Mitzvot and studied Torah. Hashem will ask us, "Did you enjoy it!? Did you have a sense of abiding joy in the good deeds that you did?!" Now, of course, we are going to have to tell the truth. What will happen if we say, "You do know, God, that I did do everything I was supposed to. But I can't really say that I enjoyed it.."? As an example, the Shabbos and Yom Tov are given to us for our spiritual pleasure and joy. In our Shabbat Tefilah we say "Yismechu B`malchutcha Shomrei Shabbat...", that those who observe the Shabbat do so in joyful celebration of our Majestic King. Therefore, we should be eager to bring in the Shabbat and slow and unhurried when it is about to end. We must learn how not to run away from Shabbat and Yom Tov - how to seek and find joy in their every moment. Learning and Davening should also be replete with joy. The joy in performance of any and every Mitzvah should be akin to the joy felt by those who are in the service of royalty.
Sukkot is Zman Simchateinu. It is the most appropriate time to reorient our disposition to Jewish life so that it is evermore a life of joy and Simcha Shel Mitzvah. [Adapted from Chochmat Kohelet, vol. 2]

In Israel, Swap Touches Old Wounds By ETHAN BRONNER
JERUSALEM - Arnold Roth had just returned from synagogue on Friday morning when the phone rang. It was Israel's Justice Ministry, telling him that two of the people who murdered his 15-year-old daughter Malka at a Jerusalem pizzeria a decade ago would be freed next week as part of an exchange of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for an Israeli soldier held by Hamas.
It was not an unexpected call but it was, for Mr. Roth, a horrifying one.
"This deal is a disaster," he said of the exchange for the Israeli soldier, Staff Sgt. Gilad Shalit, as he sat with his wife, Frimet, on the balcony of their Jerusalem apartment. "Some of these people will go back to murdering. They pose an existential threat to all of us."
Blocks away, Esther and Yehuda Wachsman were absorbing similar news - that a man who took part in murdering their son, Nachshon, in 1994 was to be freed for Sergeant Shalit. By cruel coincidence, it was the anniversary of the killing - Oct. 14. But Mrs. Wachsman had a different response.
"I'm willing to pay the price for another woman's son to come home and end the agony," Mrs. Wachsman said, sitting near a corner of her living room devoted to Nachshon's memory. "Our hurt will never go away, but I just hope and pray with all my heart that Gilad comes home healthy in body and soul."
The contrasting responses from two couples who have known and comforted one another were part of the highly charged emotional and political atmosphere in Israel since the announcement on Tuesday about the exchange aimed at ending more than five years of captivity for Sergeant Shalit, 25. Early on Friday, a man who lost both his parents and three siblings in the pizzeria attack that killed Malka Roth defaced the Tel Aviv memorial to Yitzhak Rabin, the slain prime minister. The man, Shvuel Schijvesschuuder, 27, said he was protesting the freeing of his family's killers.
"People don't understand the horror of what has been going through my mind," he said in an interview at his home near Tel Aviv after being detained and freed by the police. His brother, Meir, 32, said all five remaining members of the family would leave the country forever after the deal was completed.
"We feel betrayed and we are going back to Holland," he said.
As the details of the exchange become public, the near universal joy that greeted the original announcement is being tempered with concern. Israel Radio reported that Sergeant Shalit would be handed over to the Red Cross in Gaza on Tuesday, taken from there to Egypt and then flown to a military base in central Israel, where he will be reunited with his family. They will then be flown to their home in the country's north.
The full list of Palestinians to be released will be posted on an Israeli government Web site by Sunday, although the Justice Ministry's calls and lists published by Hamas provided some idea of who is on it. About 477 prisoners will be released in the first round, with 550 to follow two months later. Several hundred of those to be released are serving life sentences, and most of them will go either to the Gaza Strip or go into exile to other countries.
Among those is Ahlam Tamimi, a 31-year-old woman who was a key figure in the pizzeria attack. She is often described as the driver of the car that brought the suicide bomber to the Sbarro restaurant and killed 15 people. But the Roths say her role went far beyond that, to the actual planning of the attack.
In interviews from prison, Ms. Tamimi, who was a journalist, has told of having brought the suicide bomber to Jerusalem and then going on Palestinian television's afternoon broadcast to announce the news of the attack without acknowledging her involvement.
"I'm not sorry for what I did," she told an Israeli news organization in 2006. "I will get out of prison, and I refuse to recognize Israel's existence. Discussions will only take place after Israel recognizes that this is Islamic land."
The Roths said their anger over the prisoner exchange was focused on Ms. Tamimi, who is being sent to Jordan. She is young, fervent and charismatic, Mr. Roth said, and proud of what she did. In a documentary on Palestinian prisoners, she was asked whether she knew how many children had been killed in the attack. She did not. When told the number was eight, she smiled.
The Roths recalled that their daughter, known as Malki, was a dedicated volunteer for disabled children. In her memory they started and still run a foundation that helps families keep their disabled children at home by providing equipment and therapy. About 30 percent of the foundation's beneficiaries are Israeli Arabs, Mr. Roth said.
"This is not a political issue for us," he said. "I am not some raving right-winger. We too share the joy of the Shalit family. But the victims are being marginalized. We object on principle. We see ourselves as agents of the children who will be killed by the graduates of this release."
For the Wachsmans, the return of Sergeant Shalit is especially poignant. Like Sergeant Shalit, their son was a 19-year-old corporal in uniform when he was seized by Hamas militants. But in their case, the Israeli military tried to rescue him six days later and failed, leading to his death.
"It happened 10 minutes from this apartment," Mrs. Wachsman said. "I heard the helicopters."
One man being freed next week was the driver in the abduction plot, she said. His parents have been interviewed on television saying that it is about time that he was freed. Mrs. Wachsman did not share that sentiment.
"I wish him nothing but ill for the rest of his life," she said, her gaze steady.

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group
There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.
The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.
If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.
We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
