 Rain On Succot

There are many discussions among the poskim concerning the obligation to eat in the succah on the first night of Succos if it is raining. The following points are raised:

* If rain is falling, is one obligated to eat in the succah or not?

* If it is raining, is one obligated to wait and see if the rain will stop so that he can eat in a dry succah?

* If one does eat in the succah while it is raining, can a blessing be recited?

* If a person ate in the succah while it was raining and then the rain stopped, is he required to eat in the succah again?

* If a person ate in the succah while it was raining and then went to sleep, is he obligated to get out of bed to eat again once the rain has stopped?

Since there are various opinions on all of these issues, the following is a summary of the majority view and the accepted practice:

If it is raining steadily and there is a reliable weather forecast for rain all night, one should make Kiddush [with shehecheyanu] and eat slightly more than a beitzah [ 10 grams of bread ] in the succah.

No blessing over the succah is recited. The rest of the meal is eaten in the house

If (as is often the case) there is no reliable weather forecast and there is a possibility that the rain will stop, e.g., it is drizzling or it is raining off and on, it is proper to wait an hour or two for the rain to subside. The poskim agree, however, that if the delay will disturb the dignity and pleasure of the Yom Tov, or if the family is hungry and/or tired, there is no obligation to wait.

If the rain stops while the meal is being eaten in the house or even after the meal is finished, one is obligated to go to the succah, recite leishev ba- succah, and eat at least slightly more than a beitzah of bread. Even if the rain stops after midnight, that amount of bread must be eaten in the succah. If one has already gone to bed and then the rain stops, there is no obligation to get out of bed in order to eat in the succah.

Raboyseyee and Raboyseyettes:

Made in China:

Exhale!  With the blessings of the RBSO, we're all still here. Seemingly we've been spared; at least for now. Don't take that as a license to go out and start a brand new slate of avayrois; the RBSO is zicher watching and has you on a short leash.

This week, just as the rains are scheduled to arrive, we'll be celebrating the joyous yoim tov of Succois, which avada you all know begins four nights after Yoim Kippur ends. It's a holiday when we celebrate protection, avada we all know that protection is good, if you chap.  And if you do, protection is avada and avada vichtig (critical). What's pshat? Avada you recall, or at least should, that the RBSO gave the yiddin full protection as they left Mitzrayim (Egypt) and for the 40 years that they were schlepping through the midbar. We commemorate the protective "Clouds of Glory" surrounding the BNY. It also commemorates how the yiddin lived in temporary dwellings during that same time. We leave the safety and security of our houses and put ourselves under the direct protection of the RBSO and lehavdil (to diffentiate) the Chinese who manufacture the great majority of Succois and Sechach that are imported and sold all over this country.

Speaking of rain....shteltz zich di shailo (the question arises): Is rain always considered a curse on Sukkois?

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.

To volunteer, please contact:
