GHETTO PARSHA

By Rachel Solomon

In this weeks bezazzlin Parshas we find:

                          " כִּי הַמִּצְוָה הַזֹּאת אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם לֹא נִפְלֵאת הִוא מִמְּךָ וְלֹא רְחֹקָה הִוא"

Ki Hamitzva Hazot asher Anochi Mizavecha Hayom

Lo Niflat hu memecha vlo richoka hu

For this mitzva that I am commanding you today

is not concealed from you,  nor is it far away

Wawawia! This means that what we are commanded to do, along with the ideas present in the Torah are not ideas that are wayyyy outta whack that we cannot reach, attain, understand. Because- they aren't outer space concepts- yet they are available to us and within reach.

How are we to further make sense of this? Aren't some mitzvot harder to do than others? How are we supposed to go about doing the actions?

The Yarmulke Conundrum

By: Joel Moskowitz

A few years ago on the Long Island Rail Road, I sat next to a friend from Shul. At the time our Shul was going through a transition and I asked my friend, who was involved with the goings on there why he had not put himself forward as a candidate for president. He pointed to the buttered roll and coffee in his hand and said to me "I got these at John's Coffee Shop and I don't think it appropriate for the president of an Orthodox Shul. " I answered him with what I thought was a simple yet pertinent point, "so you won't go to John's for a couple of years.

Members in Good Standing

If there are sections of the Torah that emphasize uniformity and sameness, this is not one of them. The opening lines divide the Jewish people into no less than ten groups. That is quite a few divisions in a pasuk which chiefly emphasizes the common fate of all those who survived the previous forty years and now stood together in a covenant with Hashem! There must be some important point to apportioning them to so many subgroups. Somehow, what we share does not erase what divides us.

Looking at the Zohar, our confusion spins out of control. The hayom / "this day" of the first pasuk alludes, according to the Zohar,to the Day of Judgment - to Rosh Hashanah, the day in which we picture humanity passing under the rod like a huge herd of sheep. We are judged as individuals, and on the other hand, we are united by the arduous experience we all undergo at the same time. So focusing on individuals would be justified, as would looking at the entire collective. But why introduce the notion of a significant number (which ten always is!) of subgroups?

A Knock on His Door

Young Israel Of Lawrence-Cedarhurst

Rabbi Moshe Teitelbau, Rabbi of YILC

Our recitation of Selichot (beginning this Motzo Shabbos) opens with a description of who we are and what we look like - and what we should feel like - as we present before the Rebono Shel Olam, begging for His forgiveness: "Lechah Hashem Hatzedakah V`lanu Boshet Hapanim." [Daniel 9]  "You, Hashem, are all righteous, while we are shame-faced".

Why is the feeling of shame so prominent as to appear in the very first words of Selichot? Why is it so important for us to express this sense of shame?  Furthermore, shame is a virtue if it results from critical introspection - from a thorough and detailed accounting of our selves.  Such self examination is time consuming and deliberate. It takes many days and even weeks. Are we claiming, so early in the process of these Days of Awe, that we have already performed a thorough Cheshbon Hanefesh (religious/spiritual self-accounting) and can give a detailed report as to our personal flaws and failings?

Bikur Cholim Bake Sale

Hi Ladies - I hope that everyone is well.

Pls mark your calendars - Elaine and Yossi Farber will be hosting their annual Yehuda Memorial Bikur Cholim Bake Sale.

The bake sale is to benefit the Yehuda Mem. Bikur Cholim, which sets up rooms (near the hospitals) for frum people, who have family members in the hospital.

(Sort of unfortunately, I can tell you from multiple first hand experiences, that such rooms are crucial for those who have to be near the hospital, particularly on Shabos or Yom Tov, lo alianu)

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
