A Tale of Two Fires

By: Joel Moskowitz

One morning in the early 1970's my father woke me up earlier than usual and told me to get dressed fast, there had been a fire at our Shul and we were going to see if there was anything we could do. It turned out that our Shul, the Chernobyl Shteibel in Boro Park was one of three firebombed that night in the neighborhood in apparent coordinated Anti-Semitic attacks. Thankfully, no one was hurt and despite some minor damage to some Torah's they survived the attack. The sanctuary was not so fortunate.

Book of Devarim: Parsha Ki Tavo

In the first portion of this weeks Torah portion, we find in Chapter 26, verse 11:

     "וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְכָל הַטּוֹב אֲשֶׁר נָתַן לְךָ יְ־הֹוָ־ה אֱלֹהֶיךָ וּלְבֵיתֶךָ אַתָּה וְהַלֵּוִי וְהַגֵּר אֲשֶׁר בְּקִרְבֶּךָ"

(Visamachta bichul Hatov Asher Natan lecha Hashem Elokecha

                                               U'l'veitecha ata v'haleivi v'hager asher Bikirbecha)

And you will rejoice with all of the good that Hashem, your G-d has given to you,

given to your household, you, the Levite, and the stranger who are among you

 ::UM, WHAT?::

In plain ole' English- G-d is good to us, we gotta be rejoicin about that! We gotta be happy in recognizing it even if it don't seem like G-ds goodness is being sent directly to us- since our next door neighbor may be soaring high and easy through life while we are just average jo-hosophats , or our summer school teacher is a greeeattt sage who was born with tremendous synaptic networks in his cranium  while we scramble for a shtickle bissle higher of a grade...Even if it's an indirect benefit- it's in a way... how you say.. direct.

Soul Of Approval

Volume 3 Issue 51

by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky

In this week's portion, Hashem asks us to follow in His ways and assures us that "He will confirm you as his holy people - if you uphold His laws and go in His ways. "Then all the people of the earth will see that the name of Hashem is proclaimed over you and they will revere you" (Deuteronomy 28:4-5).

The Torah tells us that our association with Hashem's name will improve our approval rating. Is it the fact that His blessing will make us successful and the success will bring reverence? Or is it simply stating that if one is righteous then his presence will inspire awe? Or perhaps the promise is greater. Hashem assures us that His guidance and His name, will stand behind our every action. And they will be touched with awe, reverence and immortality.

In 1923, when Rabbi Meir Shapiro was but 37 years old, he had a revolutionary idea. If all Jews were to learn the same folio of the Talmud and follow a set calendar, not only would Jews complete the Talmud after seven years, but world Jewry would have one unifying thread to bind it together. Thus the concept of the Daf Yomi (the daily Talmud page) was formulated.

Selling this idea was not easy. Many rabbinic leaders felt that a two-sided page a day was too quick a pace for complex Talmudic issues. It often took weeks to analyze even one side of a page! However, the idea was received warmly by the great sage and tzaddik, the Chafetz Chaim, who encouraged Rabbi Shapiro to present it at the first Knessiah (World Congress) of Agudath Israel held in Vienna, Austria in 1923.

A REQUEST TO HELP SAVE A LOCAL BOY

JASON BOTWINICK

Dear Friends

Our friend and member, Jason Botnick has been battling a serious illness with great courage. Friday marks a critical day in Jason's battle. He will undergo a potentially life saving bone marrow transplant. We have been praying for Refael Matisyahu Yaakov ben Gittel Rivkah for many months. Our prayers combined with the work of Jason's doctors have been successful in getting Jason to this point. THOSE PRAYERS MUST CONTINUE. In addition, I urge you to give charity on Friday with Jason in mind. By charity I mean any sum of money (e.g a dollar in the pushka). Jason's family has composed a letter in which they lay out a specific religious strategy for all of us to assist Jason. They received this advice from Rabbis in Israel with whom they consulted. Their note follows my signature and is highlighted and italicized.

Respectfully Yours

Rabbi Hershel Billet

Dear All,
For many months, many of you have been davening, doing acts of chessed, giving tzedakah, etc., as a segulah for a refuah shleimah for Refael Matityahu Yaakov ben Gittel Rivka, Jason Botnick.
This Friday, erev Shabbat Kodesh, iyh, Jason will be undergoing his bone marrow transplant, b'sha'ah tova umutzlechet.
In this regard, we ask that you give an extra "push" for him that day, or beginning  Thursday night.
To those of you who are involved in chinuch, or have connections to various day schools and yeshivot, we ask you to please contact those schools and yeshivot and ask them to say tehillim and dedicate the day's learning as a segulah for a refuah shleimah for him.
In addition, please say perek daled of Tehillim 3 times in the morning on Friday.
Before "Neitz HaChama", which in our area is 6:36 AM, is the most preferable time to say it, but, any time in the morning will be a segulah for him.
We were also advised to have as many people as possible bring in Shabbos a little early as an additional segulah for Jason's full recovery.
We are grateful for your help in bringing about his refuah shleimah

Wishing you all a Shannah Tova, Kol Tuv, and tizku l'mitzvot.

Bikur Cholim Bake Sale

Hi Ladies - I hope that everyone is well.

Pls mark your calendars - Elaine and Yossi Farber will be hosting their annual Yehuda Memorial Bikur Cholim Bake Sale.

The bake sale is to benefit the Yehuda Mem. Bikur Cholim, which sets up rooms (near the hospitals) for frum people, who have family members in the hospital.

(Sort of unfortunately, I can tell you from multiple first hand experiences, that such rooms are crucial for those who have to be near the hospital, particularly on Shabos or Yom Tov, lo alianu)

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
