Miracles and Fate on 78: A 9/11 Story
By Ari Schonbrun, Cedarhurst, NY

There is a genre of survivor stories that I personally can never get enough of.  I am kept in good company by others who cannot seem to get enough of stories about those who survived the holocaust.  Each story is a small miracle that deeply inspires me.

So too with those who survived 9/11, many of whom arrived unusually late, and for that reason had a different fate than those who were at work on time.

What I enjoyed so very much about the book was three parts to it.  The beginning which reveals the early, normal part of Ari's day, and his desire to complete a form that was required by his child's school...how utterly mundane.

To the second part, which is so enthralling that you cant wait to turn the page to discover the details of how Ari experienced the tragedy, his unique birds eye view and perspective, and human kindness provided by him and to him.

The last section is an epilogue.  It lets the reader know how the experience has impacted on Ari these past ten years.  A story of fate...and of faith which is truly inspiring.

Those who want to purchase the book, may do so by clicking here.

The Oisvorfer Ruv

Raboyseyee and Raboyseyettes:

Uncle Sam wants you!!!

The year is 1964, the Oisvorfer is but a young lad, and the United States is nebech in the throes of the Vietnam war. The draft was real and yeshiva bochurim (boys) approaching 18 were all nervous about being drafted and sent over, it was mandatory back then. The U.S.  had this crazy notion that they could fly over to Saigon and kill off the North Vietnamese; another such war is raging 47 years later in Afghanistan only this time there is no draft.  Ober the Yeshiva boys had no interest in serving and es farshtayzich (it stands to reason) that Yeshiva bochurim were quite clever and that no governmental agency, even the Defense Department could outsmart these masmidim who all enlisted in what was then known as 'the draft dodging yeshiva program.'  Even sitting in Yeshiva seemed like a better alternative and that's exactly what they did. And do I tell you all this stam azoy (just to waste your time)? Avada  nisht. Grada (it so happens) these tidbits are very relevant to this week's parsha of Ki Saytzay.  Ober, is war necessarily bad or are there fringe benefits?

Ghetto Parsha: Ki Teizei

This weeks parsha is Ki Teizei, I'mma mention a few ideas that'll blow ya minds.

We find in Perek 22, Pasuk 4:

(Lo tir'eh et chamor achicha o shoro noflim baderech v'heetalamta meihem hakeim takeem imo)

You shall not see your brother's donkey or ox falling on the road and ignore them. You shall surely pick it up with him

We see from this that if your buddy is havin some trouble, and his possessions or his stuff are falling outta whack and he's struggling, don't just stand there! Get yo act together and help a brother out.

Ok, hold up... just his possessions and money? What about him as a person? What if someone is suffering or struggling with their spirituality, character traits, daily life, mentalities? Why iz everything always about the benjamins?

THE SHOFAR FLASHMOB

Hey Long Island!

This is my first posting for thefivetowns.com and in preparation, I Googled my name together with the words "Long Island" just to see what would come up.

Anyway, I want to take this opportunity to take back that snarky comment by declaring Long Island...every nook and cranny of it...a prime location for a worldwide happening on September 18th.

That would be the first-ever, global Shofar FlashMob.

Bikur Cholim Bake Sale

Hi Ladies - I hope that everyone is well.

Pls mark your calendars - Elaine and Yossi Farber will be hosting their annual Yehuda Memorial Bikur Cholim Bake Sale, beginning on:

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25.

The bake sale is to benefit the Yehuda Mem. Bikur Cholim, which sets up rooms (near the hospitals) for frum people, who have family members in the hospital.

(Sort of unfortunately, I can tell you from multiple first hand experiences, that such rooms are crucial for those who have to be near the hospital, particularly on Shabos or Yom Tov, lo alianu)

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
