The beguiling day after Irene, gave us magnificent weather
but major cleanup and clean out.

IRENE: LAST WEEK'S SHABBOS GUEST

I know that there are people who suffer more

But on erev shabbos Irene came knocking at our door

I know I shouldn't complain

As the wind picked up and then the rain

I knew hachnasat orchim required that I welome my uninvited guest

I prepared for her visit and did my best

I made extra cholent and kugel I thought she would like

And knew that her pathway would include our Rockaway Turnpike

Extra water and flashlights and batteries too

With such a grand visitor coming what more could I do

Although her reputation was surely proceeding her

Oh my in Elul, all kinds of loshan horah

But nevertheless I would not avoid my duty

Of greeting her and describing to all about her "beauty"

Yes she did bring destruction and surely despair

And now we are stuck with replenishing and repair

For many thank G-d Irene's Havoc is ovah

And we all have to say, Gam Zoo L'tovah.

-Have a good shabbos.

Hurricane Irene

It's no coincidence that this natural disaster [Irene] (along with the earthquake just days before) was heaved upon us at the end of August, which is also the end of Av marking the transition into the month of Elul. And what is the significance of this, you may wonder.

Did you ever realize how deep our society is concerned with possessions, material, money, 'gashmiyus'? Yet, when our lives are predicted to be threatened in some way, we pick ourselves up, abandon our belongings and run for cover. Some run to Brooklyn, Jersey, or even north of Sunrise Highway. And then the storm ends, and we make our ways back to our 'safe place'. There's something very wrong here.

 THE YEDHIVA GEDOLAH ERUV COMMITTEE

As you can imagine, this week's Eruv work has been challenging and taxing. Repair work began Monday, and as of Thursday morning, there are still sections of the Eruv that are down, and may not be up for Shabbat. Much of the remaining work will depend on the utility companies. As of now we can report that the Eruv is up north of Broadway. The sections that are still in question are south of

Broadway, including parts of Lawrence, and Woodsburgh and Hewlett

Neck.

We urge you to check the status of the Eruv before Shabbat.
To sign up for Eruv email updates, please go to www.thefivetowns.com.

Clarence Thomas Haredi Icon

By: Joel Moskowitz

In last week's NewYorker magazine, the always interesting Jeffrey Toobin profiles Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Thomas, says Toobin, is an unlikely ideological leader of the far right and the Tea Party. Justice Antonin Scalia would seem more appropriate, he of the sharp wit, scholarly pedigree and conservative bona fides. But it is Thomas who sticks most to the "Origionalist" philosophy which Toobin says interprets the Constitution "as the words were understood by the men who wrote it." To dummies like me, in Thomas world view, since there were no airplanes when the Constitution was written, the FAA must be unconstitutional. It got me thinking of how similarly simplistic my understanding of Rabbinic Judaism is. Sometimes I feel like our rabbis are such strict "Originalists" that I'm inclined to believe they want us to be more Amish than Jewish.

Elul / Rosh Hashanah

A Rosh Hashana Message

By: Rabbi M. Kamenetzky

Holy Smokes!

Every Holiday has its particular observances. Most of them are clear and finite mitzvos and rituals. On Pesach we abstain from eating chametz. We make a Seder, drink the four cups of wine and eat matzoh. On Sukkos we take the lulav and esrog and sit in the Sukkah. But the period of the High Holidays is different. In addition to the rituals performed on Rosh Hashanah, the blowing of the shofar and the various customs of eating certain fruits, the ensuing days are replete with a variety of nuances, that seem to pop up at different hours of the day and affect us some subtly and others more overtly at varying times of the day. Morning, noon and night there are activities that keep the spirit of the holidays sustained - all the way to Yom Kippur and beyond.

Walk into the synagogue. It looks different. It is bedecked in white. The bima. The ark. The Torahs. The alarm clock rings at least a half hour earlier for slichos -- additional supplications. And that is not enough. The daily weekday prayers have insertions and acts that constantly remind us of the days of awe. Smack in the middle of the prayers, even before the shema, we open the Aron to say a verse of Psalms. The Shemoneh Esrei itself contains insertions and substitutions that refer to Hashem as King as opposed to His usual title G-d; forgetting certain of these changes can render the entire recitation of the prayer invalid! And, of course there are insertions in the tefilah that remind us about G-d's power as a Judge and Purveyor of life. The Kadish is altered with seemingly subtle amendments that bear the weight of fundamental change.

Our foods are different as well. We abstain from tart and sour substances, replacing acidic foods with sweet ones. Those of us who are less stringent with eating bread baked by gentiles during the rest of the year are told that they should only eat bread baked by Jewish bakers. And though I can understand the reasons for these insertions and nuances, I often wondered: What is the objective of these insertions? Will they change our attitude toward life. Will they accomplish more than the prayers and tears and the shofar blasts of Rosh Hashanah and fasting and praying all day on Yom Kippur?

In the mid 1920s a chasid once approached the Imrei Emes, Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter of Ger: "Rebbe, I am traveling to Paris on a ten day business trip. Would the Rebbe give me a bracha (blessing) that I be successful in my venture?"

After a warm blessing the Rebbe continued to make his own request. "In Paris they sell an exclusive cigar brand that is reputed to be the best in all of Western Europe. I would appreciate if you would find that brand and bring me back a box."

The chasid was puzzled by the request, but responded enthusiastically.

"Of course, Rebbe! No problem. I will find out which is the best brand in all of France and bring you back two boxes!"

The men went on his trip and indeed returned two weeks later. He visited the Rebbe to thank him for his blessing.

"Do you have the cigars?" asked the Rebbe.

The man blushed. "Rebbe, you have to forgive me. When I was in Paris, I was so immersed in business that I totally forgot about your request. But do not worry. On the way back I made a special stop in Belgium and got you the best Belgium cigar available. I was assured that it is of equal quality to the French cigar if not better!"

The Rebbe shook his head. "My dear chasid, I did not need cigars. The reason I asked you to get me the cigars while you were in France is because I wanted those cigars to be on your mind. In that manner you would remember during your stay there that you have a Rebbe."

Of course each one varying nuances may represent an important symbolism and each insertion of prayer or change of language may offer a powerful supplication, but I believe that there is something more. During these days we must keep on inserting tiny wake up calls that shout to us, "Remember the rebbe!"

Switching words, opening the Aron Kodesh, watching our foods all may be minor acts but in the greater view they are reminders that we are living in a very spiritual and holy period and the King is waiting for us to remember him.

We live in a world that is fraught with distraction. We become immersed in our mundane world and often forget about the greater spiritual picture. During the ten days of penitence it is so important to have subtle roadblocks inserted in the daily rote of our mundane lives and even in the middle of our spiritual ones. We have to insert an extra booster of spirituality in all that e do. Because during this period we have to ensure that even the search for the perfect cigar is indeed the quest for a holy smoke. Happy and Healthy Sweet New Year

WITH HURRICANE IRENE COVERAGE

Dear Lenore,

Raboyseyee and Raboyseyettes:

Long live the king / who's in charge?

Nu, Irene has come and gone and like many women before her, she's left us confused. Many were klerring (pondering) as to whether or not she was coming altogether and if yes, when? On Shabbis perhaps, what time, with what intensity, for how long and what to taka do if she taka did come.   Nu, avada for many of you oisvorfs, this isn't such a new concept, as men think about these things all the time, if you chap. How would we know what to do on the heylige shabbis? Would we have a heter (permission) to listen to the radio, efsher also watch TV and if yes, which channel? Only the weather channel, or might we argue and suggest that once it's already on.... that it's efsher (perhaps) also ok to watch Letterman, The Tonight Show and more?

Elul / Rosh Hashanah

Wake Up!

By Rabbi Label Lam

The sound of the Shofar
Woke me up from my sleep
Like the light of the Zohar
To a place dark and deep

Like a baby's crying
I looked for the source
I stood from my lying
With an uncommon force

I tripped and stumbled
In search of the sound
Until I was humbled
And then I was found

In the Schul Yom HaDin
As I started to weep
The sound from within
Was a sound so deep!

It was a sound of fear
Mixed with elation
That Moshiach's here!
Since the time of creation

He only waits to be woken
From his long deep sleep
By a sound long and broken
That sounds like a weep

HASHEM is our King!
That's the cry
Now, let Moshiach's alarm ring
And split the sky!

Shana Tova!

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
