How have I prepared?
Bought plexiglass at Lowe's to cover
window wells that lead to basement.
Bought gallons of water, flashlights, extra
batteries.
For shabbos, buy the seven day yahrtzeit candles that will last you through shabbos.  Buy several for several rooms.
Will keep t.v. on in basement to keep up to date on the storm.
Bought life vests for all family members in case water gets too high for the little ones.
Bought wet/dry vac at Lowe's this morning.
Bought a bunch of tarps and duct tape, because they are versatile in so many situations.
Updated my first aid kit.
Bought ice for my freezer in an attempt to keep food fresh for a day or so in hopes electric will be restored quickly.
If you walk during the rain, ensure that there are no loose wires hanging around about you or in the water.
I have accessible my camping bbq with extra mini propane so I can cook or boil water.
Tradition soups and bread, peanut butter and jelly are great basics.
Parmalat boxes of milk.
I have printed out all the emergency

I know about schar halichah, but it cost two men their lives in Teaneck walking back from shule during a storm.

Special message from Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano

This is a hurricane preparedness alert.

The National Weather Service informs me that Hurricane Irene is headed toward Long Island.  If your reside South of Sunrise Highway, you live in a coastal flood zone.  As such, I advise you to immediately contact friends and family that reside North of Sunrise Highway to seek alternative shelter from now throughout the duration of the storm.

This Family and Friend Sheltering Plan will help alleviate the need for public sheltering throughout Nassau County.

If you reside North of Sunrise Highway, I encourage you to invite friends and family that live South of Sunrise Highway to shelter with you throughout the storm.

I ask that you only contact 911 if you have an emergency.  All non-emergencies should be directed to a special non-emergency hotline at 1-888-684-4274.

For more hurricane preparation information and coastal evacuation routes, please visit www.nassaucountyny.gov

A MESSAGE FROM NASSAU COUNTY
LEGISLATOR HOWARD KOPEL

Nassau County Legislator Howard Kopel, representing the Southern District including the Five Towns is reiterating that there is currently no mandatory evacuation of areas South of Sunrise Highway, but it is suggested that those who are elderly or frail should be evacuated while the weather is presently calm, to obviate the need to evacuate them in an emergency which could negatively impact them.

Furthermore, for those who are Orthodox and are concerned with the possibility that they will have to move on Shabbos for their own safety, while you are allowed to do what is necessary to protect lives, consideration should be given to moving before shabbos so that these difficult decisions may be avoided.

Parshas Re'eh

Total Control

By: Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky

In this week's portion, the Torah tells us to decimate any remnant of idolatry: "You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations that you are driving away worshiped their gods - on the high mountains and on the hills, and under every leafy tree. You shall break apart their altars, you shall smash their pillars, and their sacred trees shall you burn in the fire. Their carved images shall you cut down, and you shall obliterate their names from that place." (Deuteronomy 12:2-3)

But then, the Torah adds a verse that seems to be so unnecessary, if not wounding. The Torah tells us "You shall not do the same to Hashem, your G-d"(ibid. v.4)

We thank the

Jewish Community Relations Council Of Long Island

For providing the following information:

Shalom,

In an effort to keep the Jewish community informed of the upcoming hurricane we are pleased to provide the following information and resources for you and your communities.

Please feel free to disseminate this email widely

·         Yesterday, JCRC out our first report on Hurricane Irene's impact on our area. It includes links to the regional OEM sites and other information. See it here. We also included a link to information from the Orthodox Union re halachic considerations.

·         Forecast. See the NWS page here and the Accuweather forecast here. Currently, they discuss the possibility of tropical force storms on Sunday.

·         Evacuation. No agencies have called for an evacuation, but the possibility is on the table for some areas Find your evacuation zone by following these links: Nassau (including evacuation routes), Suffolk. If you are interested click NYC and Westchester.

  • Effects.  Given the current storm track, Southern Manhattan, Southern Brooklyn, the Rockaways and the South Shore are at the greatest risk of storm surge. Flooding, downed trees and power lines can happen anywhere.

·         Communications. It is likely that directives/warning/instructions will be aired by the media on Shabbat, when many Shabbat observant Jews do not tune in.  Leaders in the high risk communities should discuss how their communities can stay safe. It is imperative to discuss the problem with competent rabbinical authorities now, so that we can communicate heterim, if any, before Shabbat.

o    JCRC requested that the Nassau County PDand the Long Beach PD plan to use their loudspeakers should it become necessary to communicate evacuation information on Shabbat.

  • Agencies/Synagogues: Obviously, organizations should review their emergency plans and be prepared to implement them. For example, we've spoken with one agency that plans to deliver "double meals" tomorrow because it might be impossible to make deliveries on Sunday or Monday.
  • After effects:Flooding and downed trees are a given, making driving difficult. Such conditions usually lead to localized power outages (see JCRC's suggestions here) and phone outages.  Community leaders should attempt to identify people who might be "at risk" and plan to check in on them.

Rabbi Frand on Parshas Re'eh

A Spoon and a Handle

"For you shall surely open your hand to him." (Devarim 15:8)

First, the Torah tells us (15:7), "If there be a pauper among you, one of your brethren, in one of your gateways in your land that God your Lord has given you, do not harden your heart nor close your hand tight against your impoverished brother." This is clearly telling us to give charity to the poor person. Then the Torah continues, "For you shall surely open your hand to him and provide him with the necessities he is missing." This seems to call for a higher level of charity not covered by the first commandment.

There was once a Jew in Vilna who took a great interest in local history. In the course of his research, he would often go out to the old cemetery and read the inscriptions on the tombstones. He was able to gather a surprising amount of information in this fashion.

One day, he came across two adjacent graves. According to the inscriptions, the two men were brothers, both talmidei chachamim, both extraordinary baalei tzedakah, philanthropists. Strangely, the two tombstones shared an inscription from Eishes Chayil, the last chapter of Mishlei (31:20). The inscription began on one tombstone with "she extended her palm (kappah) to the poor" and was completed on the other with "and she stretched out her hand (yadeha) to the pauper.

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
