Solemn Message to us all

Tonight (wednesday) I saw a rainbow.

An ominous sign!  After tonight's deluge I went walking on the boardwalk in Atlantic Beach with

a friend. As we made our way over the bridge we saw a rainbow. It was about 8:00 p.m.

the same time as a brutally murdered little boy was being laid to rest.

Hashem wanted to destroy the world tonight.

A very ominous sign.

FROM THE DEPTHS OF OUR MOURNING HEARTS,
WE THANK YOU:  2 STORIES OF AHAVAT CHINAM
IN MOURNING

THE KLETZKY FAMILY TRAGEDY

In their hour of grief, the family of Leiby Kletzky is thanking their community and their city for helping them through the tragedy of losing their 8-year-old son to a murderer.

A neighbor posted this statement from Nachman and Itta Kletzky outside their Borough Park building Friday morning:

"We are forever grateful and thankful to Hashem (G-d). We would also like to express to each and every individual -  to our friends and neighbors and our fellow New Yorkers and to all the volunteers and to all the agencies from the local, city, state, and federal, who assisted us above and beyond physically, emotionally, and spiritually - and to all from around the world, who had us in their thoughts and prayers. From the depths of our mourning hearts, we thank you!"

SURI'S STORY

There must be a gene that is unique to Chabad, a gene that specializes

in a special brand of ahavat chinam.

I paid a shiva call in Crown Heights yesterday.  The avel that I came for had not shown up yet.  The others could tell that I was not Lubavitch,

to say the very least, indeed, they probably thought I was a "kiruv project."

So it was when I walked in, and the mourners saw me, it was time

for shacharis.  They opened a siddur for me, turned it to the correct page, held my harm so I could follow in their answers to kaddish.

After davening was complete, they filled their time telling me inspirational

stories of their families mesiras nefesh, keeping halachah in Iron

Curtained Russia.

How the authorities caught them teaching their children Torah and threatened to take the children away so they wouldnt be

brainwashed.

How they had to follow the schedule for trains to Moscow so they could  travel a day to go to the mikveh.  Needless to say, it was not heated, nor did it have extra Q-tips.

I have spoken before about Chabad's unique brand of ahavas chinam.  It is in people's nature to look askance at those that look or act differently.  There are religious Jews who feel they are part of an "exclusive" group...that isn't so, we are to be an inclusive group.  Inclusvie of all Jews, and an Or L'goyim.

The Lubavitch version of ahavat chinam: the more different you look, the farther apart you appear to be,

the closer they bring you to their hearts.

As I went to comfort the mourners,
after a week of horror, their ahavat chinam comforted me.

Shabbat Shalom.

A TIME FOR TEARS, FOR TIMELY INTROSPECTION...AND FOR ACHDUS

Lichvod all the wonderful mispallelim and members of the White Shul:

While I typically commence a missive of this sort with wishes that everyone is doing well, I know that such is simply not the case this week. How can anyone truly be doing well in light of the recent horrific and shocking tragedy that has brought immeasurable pain and agony to the Kletzky family and indeed to all of Klal Yisroel. The pain, the intense hurt and anguish, the Chillul Hashem, the many questions unanswered...the unforgettable picture of cute 8 yr. old Leiby learning over a sefer with those innocent eyes...

I sat this morning in the Camp Simcha Beis Medrash after minyan and, just as I was getting ready to head to breakfast,  I overheard a few girls davening behind the mechitza. A young girl with cancer was leading a group of campers and counselors in the morning brachos. She sounded like she was just about the same age as sweet little Leiby...and the love for Hashem, the sincere emotion expressed, the pure and pristine quality of her carefully pronounced words was palpable. And I couldn't stop thinking about how Leiby Kletzky would be reciting those very same brachos with so much kavanah this very morning had a deranged individual not brutally taken his life away so prematurely. Oh what we would do to hear his sweet brachos, his kol ha'tefilla and kol haTorah, to witness him reuniting with his parents...How truly precious every Jewish neshama is, how dear every living soul...a Jewish tragedy, a human tragedy...

Even now I fight to hold back the tears. We are heading shortly into the Three Weeks and the sadness has already set in. Having difficulty sleeping at night? Difficulty in trying not to think constantly about Leiby and his family? Join the club...I can certainly relate...SO THEN WHAT DO WE DO?

First let's stop talking on and on about his murderer and our hopes for his just punishment. Let's leave that up to HaKB"H. "Asid li'tein es ha'din"...Like any perpetrator of true evil, he'll surely suffer the consequences as Hashem deems fit. Let's also put our insatiable quest for all the facts on hold, quelling our innate curiosity to "have to hear" all the nuances known and details disclosed.

Let us then focus instead on the intense search efforts, the outpouring of love, care, and concern displayed and plentiful tefillos prayed these last few days by so many Yidden the world over. And what a display of ACHDUS we beheld! Here we are getting set to journey into the pensive Three Week period in preparation for a mourning-filled Tisha B'Av-- all in hopes of speedily rebuilding the Beis HaMikdash. And what will build it sooner than we Jews coming together in admirable displays of ahavas chinam, to rectify once and for all the distasteful sin'as chinam that has sadly plagued us for way too many years...

Indeed we witnessed a chillul Hashem that a Jew by birth can be capable of such callousness and cruelty. But just as the abduction and gruesome murder made all the headlines, so did the tremendous kiddush Hashem in Jews, genuine Jews who live proudly as "rachmanim, baishanim, and gomlei chasadim," coming together as one to search, daven, and mourn for a lone innocent neshama that most of us never even knew. What a special people we are,  what a remarkable nation indeed.

But don't we also have to contemplate the following: This is what it takes to trigger such ahavas chinam, true arvus and achdus, and being mikadesh Sheim Shamayim? Why? Why did it have to come about in such a tragic manner, in such a painful, heart-wrenching fashion? Why do we have to sit here today still feeling as if our hearts were ripped out of our chests, still davening with intensity that Hashem send Leiby's family the strength and fortitude to handle their bereavement? Is it really so difficult to love and care for one another, to wish only the best in ruchniyus and gashmiyus for our fellow Jews, to sqaush all envy and machlokes and divorce ourselves from all our rampant strife and petty conflicts?

It comes as no surprise that all this took place between the parshiyos of Balak and Pinchas. We left last week's parshas Balak having read about the depravity that engendered the tragic, untimely demise of so many Jews. Pinchas stepped up to the plate, put all personal concerns on the sidelines, and was moser nefesh to bring peace and the Divine Presence back to the Jewish People. We thus flip ahead to the outset of this week's parsha to encounter Pinchas receiving his just reward of shalom and an eternal covenant of priesthood and proximity to the Shechina. Do you want to focus on a Zimri and his despicable, perverse actions, or turn the spotlight instead on a Pinchas who restored peace to the Jewish encampment? On a wicked Jew or on the righteous, rachmanus-filled Jews ready to do what's necessary to bring our people together in peace and harmony? The choice is yours.

He'ge'a  ha'zeman. Mashiach and the geu'la are very quickly approaching. The many Chazals, the chevlei Mashiach, current events, spiritual vibes-- c'mon, you can almost feel it. So take all machlokes and bury it now. Self-entitlement, pride, ego, baseless hatred, jealousy, and all those other pejorative traits clinging to the rotting hinge upon which machlokes revolves-- cast them aside once and for all. For the kevod Shamayim, for the Jewish nation...for innocent little Leiby whose precious heart we will forever hold tightly in ours, as we ride the soundwaves of his heartfelt tefillos by the Kesai HaKavod that will bring us the geu'la b'mi'heira bi'yameinu.

Let's daven especially hard this Shabbos for "bri'si shalom," and let's keep the achdus and harmony alive. Ahavas chinam, the prized ticket to our final redemption. We've just tasted it with way too many tears -- let's now perpetuate it with endless love and smiles.

Have a great Shabbos, a meaningful and productive one, and only Kol Tuv always.

With very best wishes that we henceforth share only the very best of news,
Rabbi Eytan Feiner

OPED:  LOCAL SCANDAL

Dear Editor,

Kudos for your most tempered response to an already heartbreaking situation. It showed both sensitivity and sanity on your part; and perhaps, if there were any good to come out of this tragedy to the community, family, and individuals affected, finally the subject of those who feel compelled to "keep up with the Jonah's" might be brought to the fore. You should be President, if not of the country, at least of some shul or Yeshiva.

Sincerely,

A constituent of Ninveh

The Avraham Yonah Reading Group

There are many people in our community who are home bound or for various reasons cannot get out often and seldom have visitors. The Avraham Yonah Reading Group is a volunteer group consisting mostly of women, who go to these peoples homes and read to them. It gives these individuals an opportunity to make friends, have consistent visitors and know that others care about them.

The organization is intended to help people who are home bound, elderly, ill and in treatment or anyone else who may benefit from this service. Volunteers will visit the individuals home for approximately 1/2 - 1 hour, and will either read a book, learn Torah, play a game or just talk with the person depending on their preference. There will be a different volunteer going each day of the week, depending on how many days are requested by the person in need. It is hoped that each volunteer will continue to visit on the same day of every week.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, please contact us.

We hope you will be interested in volunteering to be a part of this wonderful chessed and join us in reaching out to our friends and neighbors who are in need and hopefully making a difference in their lives.
