Upcoming Classes & Workshops
Greetings!

I love finding a helpful tip in a magazine or getting one from a friend. We all have great tips to share with each other, probably more than we realize. As writers, we can gather and compile these tips for our own writing projects!

Tips are a big part of hobby and craft books, and can be used as the basis of your next book. To learn more, join Lynne Garner in her upcoming class, How to Write a Craft Book. It starts this Saturday, August 4th, and is limited to 15 students.

The course covers all of the details from planning to project completion, including how to find your USP (Unique Selling Point), decide what photographs and illustrations will be required, and choose the appropriate path to publication. Enrollment includes one-on-one e-mail support and feedback on every assignment. If you are crafty, this course is for you!

Also, be sure to check out all of our upcoming classes in the section below. We have several starting soon, including How to Write Children's Picture Books and Get Published (Aug 4), Write from Your Soul: Memoir Workshop (Aug 6), Advanced Social Networking for Writers (Aug 13), and Writing a Middle-Grade Novel Part 2 (Aug 23), as well as many more.

Craft books filled with tips

A Tips on Tips

By Lynne Garner

When writing about your hobby or craft it is sometimes difficult to know where to start. One tip I can offer is: think tips! Whenever I've written a craft/hobby book my editor has always asked me to include as many tips as I can. They are always telling me, "People love tips!" In fact, I've written two books filled with tips--The Greatest Guide to Creative Crafting and The Greatest Guide to Green Living.

So if you're struggling to come up with something to write, start to think about the ways you have resolved problems, how you have improved a skill, or how you have saved yourself time or money. For example, my first "discovered" tip came from my love of photography and always having those small, black film canisters lying around the house--yes, when we still used film. One day, I was looking for something to store some small beads in and realized I had just the thing. All those little film canisters! So, when you discover your own clever tip, write it down. You will soon surprise yourself with how many clever tips you have to share.

Tips are also a fantastic way of earning a small income. Magazine editors are often eager to include tips and will offer the writer of the best tip a small payment or a prize. The great thing with a prize is if you don't want it or like it then you can sell or gift it!

Lastly, getting yourself into print in this way also allows you to start collecting published clips. Armed with these clips you can confidently claim you have been in print.

So, my top tip for today is to become a collector of tips, tell your family and friends you collect tips. Keep a record of these tips and start making them work for you!
