Spotlight: Get Paid to Write: Become a Freelance Writer!
|
Greetings!
Summertime can be a great time to learn new writing tricks. The season's slower pace offers the chance to explore new topics, and taking an online class is a fun way to dive in. With the guidance of an experienced instructor, it's also easier to learn new skills. For example, if you've been daydreaming about becoming a freelance writer, now's a great time to get started. Join Nicole LaMarco's freelance writing course, and she'll show you how to make some extra money with your writing or create your own full-time freelance career. A summer session with Nicole will get the ball rolling for your fall writing success! Get Paid to Write: Become a Freelance Writer starts Friday, July 20, 2012, and is limited to 15 students. The class includes all of the basics of freelance writing: overviews of the different fields in freelance writing, what is needed to begin, how to store ideas, where to get ideas, how much you should make, where to find clients, and how to get clients. Enroll now to reserve your spot! Additional sessions are offered every third Friday of the month. In the article below, Nicole addresses a big issue for beginning freelancers: How do you get started on your writing career when you don't have published articles to show a prospective editor? It's a conundrum for all new writers, and Nicole shares five ways to earn those needed clips. We also have several more classes staring very soon, including Digital Revolution: How To Publish Your Book As An E-Book (July 9), Bring Out the Story-Teller In You (July 11), Writing a Middle-Grade Novel(July 11), Beginning Social Networking for Writers: Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn! (July 16), and The Unwilling Grammarian (July 25). You can see our complete list of classes below.
Hope you have a wonderful 4th of July!

5 Tips for Building Your Writing Portfolio and Earning Your First Clips
By Nicky LaMarco
Have you ever wondered how to get published when you don't have any clips to show the editor? If the publication asks for published work (clips) when you submit a query and you don't have any, what are you supposed to do? It can seem overwhelming, but every writer has been where you are now. No one is born with clips. You have to earn them. Here's how.- New Writers Welcome: Seek publications that welcome new writers. There are magazines that will state in their writer's guidelines that they welcome new writers. Obviously, they aren't going to ask you for clips if you are a new writer. These are great publications to help you build your writing portfolio.
- Writing Contests: Enter writing contests. They never ask you for previously published work. This can help you build your writing portfolio and become an award-winning writer.
- Submit Complete Manuscripts: Write complete articles that you can submit to various publications for consideration. Check the writer's guidelines first to make sure it is okay to submit unsolicited manuscripts (a full article that hasn't been assigned to you).
- Fiction and Essays: Write essays or fiction stories. You do not send queries for short stories or essays. The only way to pitch them is to send the full manuscript to the appropriate editor for their consideration.
- Persevere: Writing is hard work. Nine out of ten times you will get rejected. Even veteran writers face this fact. You have to keep at it. Keep writing and keep submitting. Perseverance is the key trait in successful freelance writers who have built writing portfolios.
Buy the latest copy of Writer's Market to find relevant publications to send your work to. You can also use sources online, or find writer's guidelines online. Write and build your own portfolio by yourself and start marketing your work to get published. And always get paid for your work. Happy writing!

How Much Does it Really Cost to Self-Publish?
By Deana Riddle
For those who decide to self-publish for the first time, the first question is usually about the cost. An understandable question, but one that's hard to answer in a conclusive way. It is like asking how much it would cost to buy a home. The cost of your home will depend on size, build type, interior features, exterior features, location, and so on...MORE

Don't Sell. Build!
By Deana Riddle
If you are like most authors, the very thought of having to go out and "sell" your book, is overwhelming. You aren't sure of where to begin. You don't want to take on the role of a salesperson. You don't have the money to advertise or hire a marketing professional. Here's my advice: Don't Sell. Instead, build an author platform and let it do the selling for you... MORE
