Tracy Seeley Blog Tour Invitation

WOW! Women On Writing announces Tracy Seeley's blog tour!

Blog Tour dates:

June 27, 2011 - July 29, 2011

Come and join the fun! Meet Tracy and visit her fabulous blog hostesses.

Dear ,

Mothers include funny things in baby books. Footprints, locks of hair, first teeth. When Tracy Seeley was in her 20s, she found addresses for 13 different Kansas homes she'd lived in during her childhood in her baby book. She thought maybe, someday, she'd go back and visit them. Well, someday was 20 years later. What started out as one quick trip turned into multiple trips over several years and the discovery of more than just half-forgotten homes.

Tracy Seeley wrote My Ruby Slippers: The Road Back to Kansas about the memories and insights she found on her treks through Kansas. What memories and forgotten events do your childhood homes hold? What can you learn about the choices you've made in your life from your childhood memories?

Stop by The Muffin today and leave a comment or ask a question for a chance to win a signed copy of My Ruby Slippers: The Road Back to Kansas. For an extra entry, link to the post on Twitter with the hashtag #RubySlippers. The giveaway contest closes this Thursday, June 30th at 11:59 PM, PST. We will announce the winner in the comments section the following day, Friday July 1st.

Bloggers: If you'd like to host Tracy on your blog, please e-mail us  with your request, or reply to this email. Also, be sure to check out our upcoming tours in the sections below.

  Meet Tracy Seeley

Tracy SeeleyTracy Seeley's first two sentences were "I go out" and "I can't tell you," foretelling a life of adventure and mystery. Or at least a lot of moving around.  By last count, she'd claimed 26 different addresses, half of those before she was nine.  She grew up mostly in Wichita, Kansas, a few blocks from the Arkansas River. (That's pronounced Ar-KAN-sas).

After high school in Wichita, college in Dallas and graduate school in Austin, where she finished a Ph.D. in British Lit, she taught at Yale for five years before hoofin' it west to San Francisco in 1993. And there, for the most part, she's stayed. Except for a semester in Caracas, a semester in Barcelona, a semester in Budapest, and three years living half-time in L.A. Oh, and after 17 years of living in The City, recently moving to Oakland.

She's been at the University of San Francisco since 1993, teaching literature and creative nonfiction.  There, she has won the Distinguished Teaching Award and the College Service Award, and spent a year as the NEH Chair in Humanities, during which time she began writing My Ruby Slippers. In addition to teaching, she is the co-director of the Center for Teaching Excellence and runs a program for supporting faculty writing. So she spends a lot of time organizing writing groups, salons and workshops, determined to change writing from a solitary to a community activity. In the midst of it all, and above all, she's raised two smart and darkly witty daughters who now live too far away.

For the moment, Tracy lives in Oakland with her husband Frederick Marx, a filmmaker. There, she grows vegetables, writes, grades papers, and hangs out on her stoop, talking to neighbors. She is plotting to acquire some backyard chickens. She figures if she gets chickens, she'll never have to move again.

 About My Ruby Slippers
My Ruby Slippers by Tracy Seeley

My Ruby Slippers: The Road Back to Kansas

By Tracy Seeley

Sure, there's no place like home--but what if you can't really pinpoint where home is? By the time she was nine, Tracy Seeley had lived in seven towns and thirteen different houses. Her father's dreams of movie stardom, stoked by a series of affairs, kept the family on edge, and on the move, until he up and left. Thirty years later, settled in what seems like a charmed life in San Francisco, a diagnosis of cancer and the betrayal of a lover shake Seeley to her roots--roots she is suddenly determined to search out. My Ruby Slippers tells the story of that search, the tale of a woman with an impassioned if vague sense of mission: to find the meaning of home.

Book Trailer: My Ruby Slippers

"Tracy Seeley's My Ruby Slippers: The Road to Kansas and a Sense of Place offers a

graceful journey into the secret worlds of grief, illness and, ultimately, recovery. This is a wonderfully vivid and compassionate book, reminding us of how place can shape us and make us whole again."

- Dinty W. Moore, Author of Between Panic & Desire

"Under Tracy Seeley's cool, clear gaze, the fractured landscape of America's rootlessness is seen whole again. She reminds us that place is both on the horizon and within our memories; reminds us of 'who and where we are.'  My Ruby Slippers is a complete pleasure to read, swift and graceful, and very moving."

-Lewis Buzbee, author of The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop

"There is a sensitivity and patience and persistent thoughtfulness in Tracy Seeley's prose that make her memoir unique to this cultural moment.  In her capable hands we are in no hurry to get anywhere, but happy to follow her lead down every digressive and revelatory path."

-Phillip Lopate

About the Author:

Amira Aly lived in Canada up until her first year in university when she moved to Egypt to study medicine at the University of Cairo. It seemed she was on the traditional route of a medical career working as an intern and teaching assistant in the surgical pathology department. But then she discovered the wonderful world of freelance medical writing. And who could resist its charms?

Egypt: The Uprising isn't Amira's first book. There was that picture book she wrote when she was five years old. Sadly, publishers didn't recognize its brilliance but it was the first step on a life filled with a love of writing.

When she isn't writing Amira likes to read her favorite authors Anne Rice, Stephen King, and F. Scott Fizgerald. She also spends time dancing, playing video games, and eating her favorite food Molokheya (an Egyptian green soup). She'd like to squeeze in time to learn a fourth language. She already speaks English, Arabic, and French. Amira lives in Cairo with her husband, 7 year old daughter and 17 month year old son. Her children would like to add a dog to that list but Amira, still traumatized by the loss of a pet turtle, has sworn off pets. That, and she knows she'll be the one walking the dog even though everyone promises they will.
