Greetings!

Have you considered publishing a book or e-book? It seems a lot of authors are doing it for themselves these days and reaping the benefits--the lion share of the profits. With today's connected world, there is a multitude of ways to reach readers. Authors no longer have to go through the slow and tedious process of traditional publishing. They have choices.

If you've been thinking about self-publishing your own book or ebook, why not learn how to do it the right way? Deana Riddle's course, Independent Publishing: The Definitive Course On Achieving Self-Publishing Excellence and Profitability, not only walks you through setting up a publishing company (big topic!), it teaches you about building your author/publisher platform, budgeting, how to prepare your book for publication, selling your book through wholesale channels, distribution, creating a publisher website, and so much more.

Deana has been in the business for over 25 years and is sharing her knowledge by offering this course. Independent Publishing starts next Tuesday, May 31st and is limited to 10 students. This is the first time we're offering the course, and we don't currently have plans to re-list it, so if this is something you've been considering, we urge you to enroll today.

In the sections below, Deana shares some tips on self-publishing, and we list some of our upcoming courses. We're also gearing up to post some new summer and fall classes before the end of the month. Stay tuned!

Happy writing,

Credible and Profitable Self-Publishing:

Here's What You Need to Know

By Deana Riddle

Publishing your own work can be very rewarding. It can establish you as an expert and help you grow your core business. For many, self-publishing can even prove to be quite profitable.

I consult with writers almost every day. Their very first question is almost always this: "I'm ready to self-publish. What do I need to know? What do I need to do?" Well, there are plenty of things to learn and do--but if you follow this very basic advice, you are well on your way to credible and profitable self-publishing:

Research and Learn. Quite simply, if you don't understand how the industry works, and aren't aware of important and useful resources, it's very likely that you will make a lot of frustrating and costly mistakes. Arm yourself with knowledge. It will be a key factor in your ultimate success as an independent publisher.

Publish Under Your Own Imprint. Most self-publishing problems can be directly attributed to self-publishing through a vanity or subsidy publishing service. Give yourself an official publisher name and buy an ISBN block under your publisher name. You are now, officially, a publisher--not a vanity or subsidy press author. This is the first step towards gaining credibility, lowering your costs, and increasing your profits.

Produce a Quality Book. Far too many self-publishers are still releasing poorly edited and amateurishly packaged books. Your book will have to compete against hundreds of thousands of other books already on the market. Make your book cover compelling enough to entice readers to take a look inside. Make your writing so flawless and engaging that it convinces readers to buy anything else that you have written or will write in the future.

Build a Strong Author Platform. By now, you have probably heard the term author platform. An author platform is that which supports and promotes who you are and what you have to offer. It is used to connect directly with your market to build awareness and create fans. You may already have a platform. If you don't, the time to start building one is now.

Drive Sales. Making a book available (whether online or in brick-and-mortar bookstores) will not guarantee sales. It is up to you to find your market, get your market interested in your book, and then lead them to where your book is being offered. Use your platform to help drive sales.

Write and Publish More Books. Today's most successful self-publishers have several books on the market. Instead of selling 20 copies a day of a single book, they have 6 to 10 books that are selling 20 copies a day. One other huge advantage of having several books on the market is that each book helps to sell the other books. Someone who discovers your latest book, may enjoy it well enough to go back and buy one (or all) of your earlier books. Someone who has already bought your earlier books, and enjoyed them, will be willing consumers of your new books. Keep writing and publishing. It will strengthen your brand and increase your income.
