Dear ,
Losing a loved one is one of the hardest things you will ever go through. Moving forward without them is even harder. We cope with loss in many different ways, but, as writers, we have a unique tool at our fingertips to help us deal with what we're feeling. And hopefully, with some editing and construction, we can help others who are experiencing the same thing--simply by putting words on the page. It's one of the best things about being a writer!
The author we bring you today offers a refreshing and honest account of her experiences as a widow. Barbara Barth turned to journaling when her husband died a couple of years ago. She chronicled her experiences--along with her adventures of getting back into the dating pool and living with a bevy of rescue dogs--with a bit of levity that is true to her nature. "I deal with things in an offbeat way and use humor to get me through the darkest times," Barth says. "I hope my story will make someone else smile." And that she does in her candid interview today!
Stop by The Muffin and leave a comment for a chance to win a signed copy of Barbara Barth's debut book, The Unfaithful Widow: Fragmented Memoirs On My First Year Alone.
In today's interview, Barbara talks about how she started writing. She created and published a subscription newsletter for collectors of vintage Raggedy An dolls and, after it grew too large for her to handle, sold it to another publisher. She also talks about her journey through grief and ultimately to happiness, her fears of disapproval about telling her story and how she overcame them, and shares quite a bit about her journey through self-publishing and helps authors understand the process.
If you have a question about memoir writing, self-publishing, or coping with loss, stop by today and ask Barbara a question! She's sharing
her expert advice with WOW! readers today and will be checking in to answer your questions, so be sure to take advantage of this opportunity.
If you'd like to host Barbara on your blog, please e-mail us with your request. Also, be sure to check out our upcoming authors in the section below.
Let's meet the author, shall we?

About Barbara:
Barbara Barth likes a
lot of things: turquoise jewelry, surfing the 'net, margaritas. Then
there are the dogs. Six at last count. But who can keep it straight with
all those tales wagging? This Georgia antique dealer and jewelry maker
published a hobby newsletter for 13 years. After her husband died she
recorded the year that followed in a series of essays. When she isn't
writing you can find her at the local thrift shops or pounding another
nail into the wall to hang the paintings she can't resist.About Barbara's rescue dogs: Boy Dog played cupid to us when I met my husband. My grand dame Foxy has been with me for fourteen years. Jake, my ninety-pound German Shepherd who couldn't walk and was incontinent kept me a caregiver when I had nothing to do after my husband died. He finally left me a year ago. There have been a bevy of dogs to enter these doors since then. I have adopted five rescue dogs in the last year. Each dog has its own personality and quirks. They have stories I'll never know, but they now have a home and are a riot to be around. They are: Bray, the Afghan mix; Annabelle, the hound dog mix with gingivitis; Chloe, the Chihuahua who rules the house. Then there was New Year's Eve. I couldn't get a date, so I thought get a dog, maybe two. That brought Rascal, my bull dog mix with the polka dot belly and brindle sweater, and April in Paris who dreams of the city of lights. About The Unfaithful Widow
|
The Unfaithful Widow: Fragmented Memoirs On My First Year Alone
By Barbara Barth
The Unfaithful Widow is a collection
of candid essays on finding joy again after the loss of a mate. With
warmth and laughter no subject is taboo. From dealing with the funeral
home (Can I show you our upgraded
cremation package? I looked at Miss Death, was I booking a vacation?)
to dating again (He ran in the door,
looked at me and said, "I've left something in my car." He never
returned). Sprinkle a bevy of rescue dogs (Finally a good nights sleep with someone new
in my bed.) and those questions you hate to ask (Condoms anyone?). The Unfaithful Widow is a story for
anyone who has suffered loss and is determined to become their own super
hero.
Genre: Humor/Memoir Paperback: 246 pages Publisher: Outskirts Press (April 2010) ISBN: 1432750755
The Unfaithful Widow is available for purchase at Amazon.com. (You can also read an excerpt.)

Tour Dates: June 7, 2010 - July 9, 2010
Title: Gogo's Dream: Swaziland Discovered
Author: Linda M. Rhinehart Neas
Genre: Poetry
Synopsis:This book of poetry is inspired by the people of Swaziland and the work of Dr. Maithri Goonetilleke, an Australian physician and poet who spends time working with the people of Swaziland. The poems illustrate the poverty and need in Swaziland but also the love and dignity of this family oriented culture.
All profits from this book will go to Possible Dreams International, which is a grass roots organization to help communities and families in poverty. You can learn more about their work at: www.possibledreamsinternational.org.
About the Author:Linda Rhinehart Neas self-published her first written work at the age of seven on the cardboard she gathered from her Dad's shirts after they came back from the laundry. Since then, she has written extensively in various venues. Her work has been published and performed throughout New England. Gaining inspiration from her four daughters and three granddaughters, she has calculated that she will run dry of ideas for writing sometime in the next millennium. Her first full collection of poems, Winter of the Soul, was published in 2008. Next to writing, teaching is her second passion. Presently, she is working on a book of poetry, essays and memoirs on teaching and two children's books.
Linda also won 3rd Place in WOW! Women On Writing's Essay Contest. You can read her essay, Enchanted Cottage, here.
