Claudine's path to publishing is a dream come true for any author. After twelve years spent researching her dream book and interviewing moms, Claudine couldn't find a publisher so she created her own publishing company and began promoting her book. Thankfully, her marketing attempts were successful and even landed her an interview on Dr. Laura's radio program where she sold 600 copies of her book in one day! Shortly after, she hooked up with an agent and sold the rights to a major publishing house, AMACOM. It seems that dreams really do come true, after all. Not only is Claudine a fabulous mentor to writers and moms, she's also refreshingly honest and very funny. We hope you stop by The Muffin today for a chat with Claudine. Her tour is definitely one to follow!

As always, if you'd like to be included in this tour, please contact us. We have a few more stops available for qualified blogs.

Also, if you have a blog, make sure you check out our upcoming author tours by scrolling to down to the section ("Want to host one of our upcoming authors?") below. We added two new author tours that are scheduled to launch before the end of the year. Get involved, and have fun!

Get ready for an honest look at motherhood! Let's meet the author, shall we?

Claudine Wolk

About Claudine:

Claudine is probably a mother just like you. She grew up in the time of Shaun Cassidy, The Incredible Hulk, The Brady Bunch, and The Bionic Woman. She owned Barbies, Loves Baby Soft, and an Air Supply album. Women like you and Claudine probably started a career, got married, and then, the BABY came. Life was never going to be the same. If you were anything like Claudine you had no clue how to start dealing with the staggering responsibility of new motherhood.

When Claudine couldn't find the answers or insight she needed to help her cope, she decided to write the book she always wanted - A fun, honest, simple, easy-to-read book geared to making a new mom's life a little easier.

Her search for information to make motherhood easier led to the creation of a blog at www.help4newmoms.blogspot.com, a place where she gets to write whatever she wants--things that might help a new mom, make her laugh, or get her up to date on some of the most important issues of our time, as well as American Idol. The blog has lead to invitations to visit and to speak with mom's groups. Now, she's able to share some direction, humor, and ideas with new moms all over the country in workshops and appearances where she lets participants know that they are NOT alone. You are not alone either and it's OK to take a break and laugh now and then.

Claudine Wolk is a CPA and mother of three. She lives in Bucks County, PA with her husband Joe and her children, Joseph, Casey & Ally. She writes columns as well as magazine and newspaper articles on all subjects regarding motherhood in the 21st Century. She also is available for humorous but informative workshops on the subjects of "new motherhood" and "mothers returning to the workforce." You can contact Claudine for a speaking engagement here.

It Gets Easier! ...And Other Lies We tell New Mothers
A Fun, Practical Guide to Becoming a Mom

by Claudine Wolk

After becoming a mother, I was a confused mess. Everything from labor and delivery to taking my baby home was a surprise. I felt like I had landed on another planet without a map.

I learned quickly that this new planet was NOT the vacation spot I thought it would be.

I needed a new map!

Does this sound familiar?

I looked for a book that would answer all my questions and introduce me to the more personal and humorous side of motherhood. I wanted to read the words that had been popping into my head since the moment my baby was born, "Motherhood Is Really, Really Hard!" and "What are some ways I can deal with it?" and "Do They Take Babies Back At The Hospital?"

I couldn't find the book, so I wrote it.

Here are some of the Solutions You will find in It Gets Easier!:
  • The importance of a baby schedule (no matter what anyone else says)
  • "The Talk" you need to have with your husband before you give birth
  • What you really need to know about labor and delivery
  • The Six Baby Commandments that can foster good eating and sleeping habits
  • The Five New Mom Mantras that will help keep you sane
  • Body image after giving birth
  • Breastfeeding Truths and Breastfeeding Myths
  • How to keep housework to a minimum
There is no question that being a mother is challenging, but this fun, frank, and prescriptive guide tries to do the impossible and make new motherhood easier. Featuring interviews with hundreds of moms and candid stories from author Claudine Wolk's own experiences as a mother, It Gets Easier!...and Other Lies We Tell New Mothers mixes humor, honesty, and insider strategies that will give new moms a 'leg-up'. This upbeat and entertaining book drives home the point that new moms are not alone and that there are things they can do to make motherhood a little more controllable and lot more enjoyable. Complete with resources for further exploration and a helpful glossary, this funny, irreverent book will help ease every new mother's frustration.

Thirsty: a novel
Tour Dates: November 9, 2009 - December 9, 2009

Title: Thirsty: a novel

Author:
Kristin Bair O'Keeffe

Genre: Fiction

Synopsis:
It is 1883, and all of Klara Bozic's girlish dreams have come crashing down as she arrives in Thirsty, a gritty steel town carved into the slopes above the Monongahela River just outside of Pittsburgh. She has made a heartbreaking discovery. Her new husband, Drago, is as abusive as the father she left behind in Croatia.

In Kristin Bair O'Keeffe's debut novel, Klara's life unfolds over forty years as she struggles to find her place in a new country where her survival depends on the friends who nurture her: gutsy, funny Katherine Zupanovic, who isn't afraid of Drago's fist; BenJo, the only black man in Thirsty to have his own shop; and strangely enough, Old Man Rupert, the town drunk.

Thirsty follows a chain of unlikely events that keep Klara's spirit aloft: a flock of angelic butterflies descends on Thirsty; Klara gives birth to her first child in Old Man Rupert's pumpkin patch; and BenJo gives her a talking bird. When Klara's daughter marries a man even more brutal than Drago, Klara is forced to act. If she doesn't finally break the cycle of violence in her family, her granddaughters will one day walk the same road, broken and bruised. As the threads that hold her family together fray and come undone, Klara must decide whether she has the courage to carve out a peaceful spot in the world for herself and her girls.

Kristin Bair O'KeeffeAbout the Author:

Kristin Bair O'Keeffe's life is a melding of many cultures. A native Pittsburgher (Go Steelers!) raised with the Croatian traditions of her grandparents, Kristin lives in China with a husband who was raised in Ireland and the Vietnamese daughter.

During their four years in China, Kristin has taught writing, written a blog "My Beautiful Far-flung Life, and attempted to learn Mandarin Chinese (unsuccessfully according to her neighbors). Oh, and written the novel Thirsty. Thirsty started as a graduate thesis and ended after countless drafts. Drafts that, to the dismay of her fellow coffee lovers, she felt the need to read aloud as she edited in a local coffee shop.

If she hadn't become a writer, Kristin suspects that she would have become a ventriloquist, roadie for Meat Loaf, or time traveler. (And yes, she has read The Time Traveler's Wife.) Among other things, she would use her time traveling powers to frequently return home and enjoy the magic that is the hoagies at Danny's Pizza.

Kristin's articles and essays have appeared in numerous publications, including Poets & Writers Magazine, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Baltimore Review, San Diego Family Magazine, and The Gettysburg Review. Her column--The Fiction Writing Workshop--appears monthly in Writers on the Rise.
