FICTION
Fiction Addiction Get your fiction-addiction started!

We know how much you ladies love fiction -- especially those of you who enter our flash fiction contests! And truth be told, all of the editors here love it too.

People say there aren't that many markets for fiction...well, we beg to differ! When you subscribe to our
Premium-Green Markets, we offer craft-of-writing articles on fiction and nonfiction to help you break into every market. We want you to suceed!

Here's a sample to get you started:

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Asimov's Science Fiction

http://www.asimovs.com/info/guidelines.shtml

Description: In general, we're looking for "character oriented" stories, those in which the characters, rather than the science, provide the main focus for the reader's interest. Serious, thoughtful, yet accessible fiction will constitute the majority of our purchases, but there's always room for the humorous as well. Borderline fantasy is fine, but no Sword & Sorcery, please. Neither are we interested in explicit sex or violence. A good overview would be to consider that all fiction is written to examine or illuminate some aspect of human existence, but that in science fiction the backdrop you work against is the size of the Universe.

Pay: We pay on acceptance.Beginners get:
  • 6.0 cents a word to 7,500 words
  • 5.0 cents a word for stories longer than 12,500 words
  • $450 for stories between those lengths
We seldom buy stories longer than 15,000 words, and we don't serialize novels.
  • We pay $1 a line for poetry, which should not exceed 40 lines.
We buy First English Language serial rights plus certain non-exclusive rights explained in our contract. We do not publish reprints, and we do not accept "simultaneous submissions," (stories sent at the same time to a publication other than Asimov's). Asimov's will consider material submitted by any writer, previously published or not. We've bought some of our best stories from people who have never sold a story before.

Submission Guidelines: Manuscripts submitted to Asimov's must be neatly typed, double-spaced on one side of the sheet only, on bond paper (no erasable paper, please). Any ms. longer than 5 pages should be mailed to us flat. Dot matrix printouts are acceptable only if they are easily readable.

Please do NOT send us submissions on disk. When using a word processor, please do not justify the right margin. If sending a printout, separate the sheets first.

The ms. should include the title, your name and address, and the number of words in your story. Enclose a cover letter if you like.

All manuscripts must be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope (if ms. is over 5 pages, use a 9" x 12" envelope) carrying enough postage to return the ms.

If you wish to save on postage, you may submit a clear copy of your story along with a standard (#10) envelope, also self-addressed and stamped. Mark your ms. "DISPOSABLE," and you will receive our reply only. We do not suggest that you have us dispose of your original typescript. If you live overseas or in Canada, use International Reply Coupons for postage, along with a self-addressed envelope.

Read back issues of the magazine before submitting. Prairie Fire publishes literary, not commercial writing. Sherry McBride, Senior Managing Editor
MotorHome
2575 Vista Del Mar
Ventura, CA 93001

Dear Ms. McBride:

Picture this: Three women on the road in frontier towns along the Top of the World Highway from the Yukon, Western Canada, to Alaska. None of us had ever been inside an RV before, let alone driven one. We didn't know a dump station from a hole in the ground.

Our 23-foot motor home had a kitchen with the usual appliances, a couch and table (both of which turned into beds), and a bathroom with a shower barely large enough to turn around in. Despite the tight quarters the ambiance was more cozy than claustrophobic.

It wasn't long before we discovered that washing wine glasses and laundry together cut down on "gray" water. We met crusty old sourdoughs and became members of the Sourtoe Cocktail Club, a historic tradition in the Yukon.

I would like to propose a 1,500-word story for your readers, "Wild Women on Wheels," which would weave lively anecdotes with colorful history of the gold rush towns we visited along the 1,400-mile route. A sidebar would include practical how-to information.

I've sold articles and images to publications such as National Motorist, Highways, Coast To Coast, Westways, Backpacker, Walking, Country Living, Snow Country, Scientific American Explorations, and many others. I'm also the author of two Alaskan-based books.

I can provide a wide variety of high quality 35mm transparencies of the journey. What do you think?

Sincere regards,

Your First and Last Name

SM -The Magazine for Single Mothers

http://www.singlemothermag.com

Description: SM Magazine publishes articles from freelance writers on a broad range of subjects of special interest to single mothers, including family law, health, diet and exercise, spirituality, saving and managing money, co-parenting and interpersonal relationships, lifestyle issues, etc. Editorial content addresses the concerns, interests, and problems of single mothers.

The articles should teach, inspire, motivate, and inform. The editors are primarily interested in practical, service-oriented pieces that will help millions of single mothers improve their lives and become their own experts.

Pay: We purchase first North American rights only; no reprints. Submissions must follow standard manuscript format.

The average department length story (1000 words) pays about $150 and the average interview/profile length story (2000 words) pays from $400-$1,000, depending on the story. These rates are not guaranteed and vary widely.

Amount to be negotiated at the time of acceptance. Payment is made 60 days from publication date for one-time use of the article. In addition to payment, two copies of the issue in which their article is published. Inquire if you would like additional copies.

Submission Guidelines: We encourage you to send a query if you are unsure of our interest in the topic of your article.  You can query us on more than one topic at a time.

When submitting an electronic file, please save your article as a Word Document and e-mail it as an attachment.  And we accept hard copy submissions in the mail, please send 2 clips as well.

Articles should be conversational in tone, but full of important information that is clear and concise. We do not preach to our readers. Because we offer a department, Expose, that features information on controversial subjects, we like to take a neutral tone while offering the facts.  Leave your personal comments out of the piece (unless you are telling your own story or experience) and let the information speak for itself.

We also publish well-researched, extensively documented articles. When submitting this type of article, please use only the most updated research, from primary sources. Our choice of articles depends on the other material we have published on the subject, how new the topic is to us, and how unique the presentation is. It helps if you include photos.

Departments include:

  • REFRESH: Stress prevention and relaxation techniques, products and services
  • HEART: Relationship and co-parenting advice
  • CURRENCY: Tips on creating financial success
  • LEGAL EASE: Guidance on child support, visitation, and child custody issues
  • PREVENTION: Dietary and holistic preventive disease advice
  • PERSPECTIVE: Highlighting a father's perspective on co-parenting
  • EXPOSE: New scientific, health and global discoveries

Maximum length: 1,500 words.

Average length: 800 to 1,000 words.

We edit tightly for length. A source list and/or annotated copy must be included with final submission and should include phone numbers for all people interviewed (for background or quotable material), publication dates of reference materials and other contact information when applicable.

Articles should be sent electronically and addressed to [email protected].

Please attach only Microsoft Word documents: if you use another format, please cut and paste your article into the text portion of your email message.

If you do not submit your article via email (not recommended), you must provide an electronic version of your manuscript on disk (Macintosh platform) via regular mail. The author's name, address, phone and fax number, and email address should appear on at least the first page of the manuscript.

We use AP style and all articles submitted must contain only one space between sentences. All articles must have titles and should have subheads.

Please include a brief biographical sketch at the end of your submission so that we can print it if your article is used.

When submitting this type of article, please use only the most updated research, from primary sources. Our choice of articles depends on the other material we have published on the subject, how new the topic is to us, and how unique the presentation is. It helps if you include photos.

Pay: We pay between $200 and $500 for a magazine article, the amount to be negotiated at the time it is selected for and laid out in an issue.

Payment is made 90 days from publication date for one-time use of the article. In addition to payment, all authors receive a one-year complimentary subscription to Mothering and two copies of the issue in which their article is published. Inquire if you would like additional copies.

Submission Guidelines: We encourage you to send a query if you are unsure of our interest in the topic of your article. A query is a one-page specific description and outline of your article. You can query us on more than one topic at a time.

The length of an article is not a significant consideration. Although we recommend 8 to 10 typewritten pages, or 2,000 words, do not let length be a limitation. Say what you have to say.

We regularly cover the following subject areas:

  • The Art of Mothering focuses on the inspirational and spiritual side of nurturing. Here is where we share ideas and philosophies that help us to be the kinds of parents we want to be.
  • Health explores new approaches to health care for the whole family. We welcome coverage of a wide range of topics, encouraging articles on approaches to common childhood health questions that incorporate integrative medicine.
  • A Child's World contains articles that reflect the world as a child sees it. In this section, we especially like to feature activities, crafts, arts, music, and stories for children.
  • Pregnancy, Birth and Midwifery features all aspects of pregnancy and birth as well as actual experiences and stories of childbirth. While we regularly feature homebirth stories, we welcome stories of birth in a variety of settings. We also like to feature stories of freestanding birth centers. We like well-researched articles on the politics of childbirth and how-tos on avoiding unnecessary medical intervention. Inspirational, practical, and advocacy articles are welcome.
  • Breastfeeding We regularly publish articles on breastfeeding. We like stories of moms overcoming obstacles to breastfeeding, how-to articles on breastfeeding, and breastfeeding advocacy articles.
  • Ways of Learning features articles on innovative, multidimensional, people-centered approaches to education. This section focuses on how people learn as well as where they learn, and includes learning about traditional subjects as well as subjects usually thought of as outside the realm of education: responsibility, ethics, adventure, travel, intuition, spirituality. We want to know about new, as well as rediscovered "old," ways of learning, with attention to schools and methods that support the full potential of the human child.
  • Family Living contains informative, general interest stories that share helpful hints, practical suggestions, and insights into the daily realities of parenting.
  • Peggy's Kitchen is our recipes section. Recent topics include Winter Soups, a toddler cooking class, and holiday-themed recipes. Generally, an introductory block of text of about a thousand words is followed by 5-7 recipes.
  • Poetry We publish several poems in each issue. Please send us no more than three poems at a time. Poems can be submitted directly to Candace Walsh, our poetry editor, at [email protected].
  • Web Publication Our site hosts a mix of content from prior magazine issues, as well as web exclusives. Articles may be submitted via email to [email protected] in consideration for exclusive web publication. The added venue of our website offers us the chance to publish new online content weekly. Articles submitted to the magazine may also be considered for web publication.

ANTHOLOGIES
Anthologies Get your stories out & in print!

For those of you striving to publish your novel or nonfiction book, anthologies are a super way to start buzzing your book, and getting your foot through that publishing doorway. Plus, it's a fantastic exercise to keep your writing fingers limber, and the comraderie of sharing your story with a team of authors is amazing!

Our own editor, Chynna Laird, has been published in an anthology, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Children With Special Needs. Her experience has been wonderful, as she mentions in this blog post on The Muffin. In the Premium-Green Markets newsletter Chynna shares her personal experience with her "In the Trenches" column that is bound to inspire! She also gives her advice to moms who want to jump-start their freelance writing career.

Hourglass Books (Short Stories)

http://www.hourglassbooks.org/

Description: We publish anthologies of short stories assembled around a common theme. We are interested only in literary fiction. The category of literary fiction excludes genre works, such as science fiction, mystery, romance, westerns, etc., since these works already have many other outlets available to them.

We are now accepting stories for our fourth anthology, Occupational Hazards: Stories From the World of Work. If you have a wonderful short story on this theme, we are interested in seeing it now. You also may join our mailing list to learn about our themes for future books and other news items.

Pay: We follow the Authors Guild model contract and pay author royalties according to the recommendations in that form. Since these are anthologies, all royalties are shared among the contributing authors as determined by the publisher.

Deadline: There are no word length limits, and there is no fixed closing date.

Submission Guidelines: We accept previously published works and simultaneous submissions.

To submit a short story, you may include the body of the story in an email. For security reasons, we do not open email attachments from people who are not yet known to us. Send all submissions to: [email protected].

Skysong Press (Christian)

http://ca.geocities.com/[email protected]/submit.htm

Description: The more familiar you are with our publication, the better chance you will have of landing a story with us. We make this easy by offering back issues of Dreams & Visions at low, low prices. A writer's sample package of four back issues is available for only twelve dollars (all taxes, postage and handling charges included.) The current issue can be ordered for $5.95. We hope to hear from you in the near future.

Pay: Payment is made upon publication at the rate of one cent per word. Skysong Press does not buy exclusive rights of any kind. Authors are free to submit their work to other markets at any time.

Submission Guidelines: Skysong Press is currently OPEN to submissions. We prefer stories with active writing and strong characterization, but we do not want to put any limits on an author's imagination. Give us your best work. Shake us up and rattle our old bones!

We publish a wide variety of short fiction 2000 - 6000 words in length. Although we are primarily interested in the spiritual aspects of your work, this need not be the overt subject matter of a good story. As a general rule, we prefer stories that lift up, rather than tear down. We love stories that offer redemption from the past and hope for the future. Our organization is based on orthodox Biblical interpretations of spirituality, but we will not consider rehashed Bible stories in modern or ancient garb. We expect authors to give us something we have never seen before--to portray spiritual truths in new, innovative or unique ways.

No literary genre is excluded from consideration by the editors. We have published metafiction, science fiction, romance, humor, fantasy, magic realism, as well as mainstream stories of a contemporary or inspirational nature.

We buy original, creative fiction 2000 to 6000 words in length for our semi-annual literary journal, Dreams & Visions. We do not publish poetry; we do not publish stories that glorify violence or perversity; we do not publish work for children or teens or young adults. We have accepted work from Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Kenya, Nigeria, United States and Zambia.

All submissions must include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient Canadian postage for a reply. From outside Canada, send a disposable manuscript with one U.S. dollar for a letter response. Do not send U.S. stamps! They have no value outside America. We do not accept submissions by email or by fax; however, we do accept simultaneous submissions and will consider previously published material. Our response time is one to three months.

Life In The USA $1000 Essay Contest

http://www.lifeintheusa.com/contest.htm

Description: The www.lifeintheusa.com $1000 Essay Contest is designed to help www.lifeintheusa.com grow and serve immigrants and American students wishing to know more about American life.

Submission Guidelines: The contest will apply to all essays we accept and publish beginning September 1, 2007.

The contest will end either on June 30, 2008 or when www.lifeintheusa.com publishes at least 100 sections from entrants, whichever is later. www.lifeintheusa.com expects to announce contest results and award the prizes within six weeks of the contest ending date. The winners will then be profiled on the www.lifeintheusa.com site and the site's international news feed.

All articles accepted for publication in www.lifeintheusa.com within the contest dates will automatically be entered into the contest. There is no limit to the number of articles from any one author, provided each is first individually accepted by www.lifeintheusa.com for publication on the site.

Essays should follow these basic guidlines:

Please send a query and suggest your idea to us before writing. Surf the site first. It can be an entirely new section, a fuller explanation of one of the topics already covered, or it can correct material that may be wrong or outdated.
500 words or so, more if necessary, written in the third person (don't mention yourself).

If a social issue is involved, please try to cover both sides. Remember, readers will have the chance to click on your website to hear your point of view.

The essay should be generally useful and not too specific. As an example, a general article on pet grooming would serve to explain the phenomenon; an article on grooming long haired dogs would be too specific.
Think quality. Write and rewrite. Proofread carefully. Have others review your essay.

Prizes: A first prize of $500 will be awarded, plus five $100 second place prizes. Individual writers may win at most a single prize, the highest for which they are chosen by the panel.
