Greetings!

As professional writers, we tend to get into the grind of making a buck, hitting those deadlines, and delivering results. It's enough to make you forget why you started writing in the first place--your love of self-expression. Writing isn't all about submitting, submitting, submitting...it's also about personal growth. When was the last time you wrote something entirely for yourself? We need to remember that is important too.

The benefits of personal writing are endless. When we write for enjoyment, we learn so much about ourselves. We work through problems and come up with solutions on our own, we relieve stress, we find our true voice, and perhaps, our true calling. That's what we hope you'll discover in this issue. Whether it's memoir writing, poetry, personal essay writing, journaling, or blogging, you're bound to find a creative outlet from the experts in this issue.

And what about personal space? I'm not talking "You're invading my personal bubble" sort of personal space; I'm talking about your surroundings. Having a comforting space to create is just as important as writing in it. In fact, it should probably come first! I know we've all heard the saying: "Let the dusting go," but what if the dust is subconsciously affecting your writing? Sometimes, we need to clear the excess baggage to clear our minds and free our inner muse.

Ready to get started? This issue is all about YOU.

To WOW! team member, LuAnn Schindler, for her uplifting article about positive journaling, featured in our Freelancer's Corner column. Thank you, LuAnn, for coming through with a fantastic piece on such short notice! I bet we'll be reading more from you very soon.

To WOW! Columnist, C. Hope Clark, for giving us a ton of great personal story markets in this month's Funds 4 Writers column.

To WOW! team columnist, Margo Dill, for exploring ways to bring personal writing into your daily routine, as you'll see on the Editor's Desk.

Linda Formichelli's 8-Week E-course on Breaking into Magazines

Starts: Monday, September 22, 2008

If you want to write for magazines but don't know how to get started--or if you need some motivation to get you going--this course is for you. In eight weekly lessons, I'll walk you through:

  • Coming up with a salable idea
  • Finding markets that would be interested in your idea
  • Finding the right editors to send your idea to
  • Interviewing people for the query letter (the proposal that sells the editor on your idea and yourself as a writer)
  • Writing a winning query letter
  • Getting your query out the door!
Each lesson includes an assignment. You can do much of the assignments after work, during your lunch break, on weekends--whenever YOU have the time. The best part is, you can use the lessons you learn in this course over and over again. The more queries you write and send, the better the chances that you'll get published!

The basic course includes eight weekly lessons and the premium course includes personalized e-mail support as well. (I set aside Wednesdays and Fridays to answer e-mails.) I am here to guide you through the program and to answer any questions you might have.

How You Can Get Started

The next session of my e-course on breaking into magazines starts on Monday, September 22, 2008. The premium course fee is $240 for eight lessons and eight weeks of personalized e-mail support related to the e-course. (That's just $30 per week for lessons, assignments, and personalized support!) The basic course fee is just $120 for eight lessons and no e-mail support. (Cheap!)

 A Tasty Summer Read

The Break-Up Diet The Break-Up Diet
By Annette Fix

In her hilarious and heartbreaking memoir, The Break-Up-Diet, Annette Fix shares her story about how she always believed in happily-ever-after and was busy working her Five-Year Plan: marry her golf-pro boyfriend, homeschool her preteen son, become a famous writer, and retire to Fiji. When her live-in boyfriend calls it quits, Annette finds herself on The Break-Up Diet, consuming vast amounts of chocolate and exercising poor judgment by diving blindly into the shallow end of the dating pool.

Working as an exotic dancer to bankroll her aspiring writing career and support her son alone, Annette uses her blue-collar instinct to survive in the plastic jungle of The OC.

Annette's adventures take her on a wild ride as she attempts to find the perfect balance between her dreams and her day-to-day life as Supermom. The Break-Up Diet a book for hopeless romantics, seekers of princes, believers in happily-ever-after, queens of their own castle, and readers who love books that make them laugh and cry and nod their heads, saying--"I've been there."

Carolyn Howard-Johnson:

Editor and Author's Blogs Honored 2nd Time in a Month

The Frugal, Smart and Tuned-In Editor blog (www.thefrugaleditor.blogspot.com) was named Blog of the Day Award at Blog of the Day Awards.

The winning blog is an interactive blog where writers of every ilk send questions to Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success. She answers in her imitable, colloquial and sometimes irreverent style and when she can't, she finds an expert who can.

This is the second award Howard-Johnson has received for her blogs this year. Brian A. Klems, online managing editor at Writer's Digest, named her Sharing with Writers (www.sharingwithwriters.blogspot.com) to his magazine's 101 Best Websites in 2008 only last month. Klems notes that the blog is full of "cheap ways to promote your book" but also mentions her Sharing with Writers newsletter as a source for writers. See the June, 2008, Issue of Writer's Digest magazine, p. 54.

Howard-Johnson is also the founder of Authors' Coalition, an organization for writers (http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com. Her other blogs are www.warpeacetolerance.blogspot.com and www.thenewbookreview.blogspot.com.

Howard-Johnson may be reached at (HoJoNews@aol.com) Information is also available at http://www.howtodoitfrugally.com.

Congrats Carolyn on all your blogging success!!
