Greetings!
Pack your bags! This issue WOW!
takes you on a trip down the road
less traveled. Although this may not be your
ultimate publishing destination, our goal is
to give you
all the 'travel brochures' you can carry to help
you decide.
These 'brochures' examine all publishing
models: Vanity/Subsidy publishing,
self-publishing, book sheparding, print on
demand, and
going from self-publishing to getting picked
up by the big house!
With the publishing industry evolving right
before our very eyes, and the online
marketplace taking off, we, as aspiring
authors have more choices than ever. It's
good to arm yourself with all the knowledge
you can to help make these important
decisions. And that's what our 'tour guides'
will help you do.
ANNOUNCEMENT:
On another note, with traveling comes change.
Not change in destination, but a change in
tour guides. WOW! is saddened to
announce that our esteemed Editor, Beryl Hall
Bray, is no longer going to be with our
publication, as she is pursuing her career as
a freelance writer. We wish Beryl the best in
all her endeavors! Beryl, you will be sorely
missed by the WOW! team.
And although Beryl is leaving her position,
she's not leaving WOW! Women On
Writing--she has two excellent articles in
this month's self-publishing travel guide! So
please check out her interviews with Arlene
Uslander and Actress Linda
Wang!
Welcome to the WOW! Family
Officially!
On that note, we pass the torch to our new

We sincerely thank you for sticking in there,
putting up with our server crashes and
contest delays, and your expedience in

on you. Believe me, we've been
pulling our hair out over here too!
But we're excited to announce that the wait
is over. And the winners of the 2007 Spring

We've finally resolved WOW!'s
technical difficulties!
If you tried to access the site during the
month of June & some of July, you may have
had trouble, or
gotten that gremlin message, "Server is too
busy." We apologize for any inconvenience
this may have caused. Our poor little shared
server was unable to handle our stampede of
traffic! We're happy to announce this issue
has been resolved.
TEST - Let's all try to STORM THE
SERVER: GO!
To
make sure our new server can
handle us, we'd appreciate it if you could
click on as many pages as possible during one
sitting. This will help us verify if our new
server can handle our peak traffic. If you
receive an error message, please e-mail our
webmaster and let him know what time the site
crashed, and what the error message was: webmaster@wow-womenonwriting.com
We never
want what happened last month to happen
again, no matter how busy we get. It's a
bummer for all readers, freelancers,
contributors, and contestants. So, if you
could, let's try and break the server just
once. If it doesn't crash, then we'll know
we're sailing on smooth waters. ;-)
Now, onto the issue. Enjoy!

Wendy Tokunaga: From Self-Publishing to the Big House
Never Gave up, By Suzanne Kamata
Wendy Tokunaga is a self-publishing success
story!
Her first book, NO KIDDING, was
self-published through POD (print-on-demand)
publishing, and won her an award with the
Writer's Digest contest for self-published
books -- although, Wendy says, "It didn't help
as much as I thought..."
But it did teach her an invaluable lesson in
book promotion, which she kindly shares with
WOW!
readers.
Wendy's forthcoming book, Midori By
Moonlight, will be published by St.
Martin's Press in September 2007. Her story
is one of determination, inspiration, and packed
with useful tips we all can benefit from --
including the best way to find an agent, how
to market your book online successfully, and
what key words she used to get
her to the top of search engines!

A Call for Quotes on Grandparents
Our very own WOW! Team Member,
Chynna Laird, needs your quotes!
"My grandparents were the most important
people in my life. They literally gave me the
glimmer of light I needed to rise above what
was going on my house and helped save me from
becoming a statistic. Without them, I
wouldn't be here. Period. In their memory,
and in celebration of grandparents all over
the world, I would like to hear quotes about
why grandparents are important and a brief
description of why.
This isn't a Chicken Soup For The Soul
project so I don't need actual stories. Just
brief quotes (maybe a paragraph or two) of
how grandparents have sprinkled their
stardust in your lives. I want to hear from
parents, grandparents, kids and even experts
(psychologists, counselors, social workers,
etc) about this special relationship. I want
to include as many of the quotes as possible
in the first section of my upcoming book.
Please send your quips to lilywolf@telus.net
I will accept quotes until July 31,
2007.
When sending your quote, please specify how
you want to be quoted: full name, first name
only or anonymous. Totally up to you. For
kids, they can send their own statement or
parents can write for them."

Lauren Baratz-Logsted
I asked Lauren, "Got news for WOW?" Here's
what she wrote in: "What's up with me? The
latest, in case I haven't mentioned it, is
that Houghton Mifflin bought the first four
in a projected nine-book series for young
readers called THE SISTERS EIGHT. The fun
part is that the books are being written by
me with my husband, the novelist Greg
Logsted, and our seven-year-old daughter
Jackie. The series is about octuplets, the
Huit sisters, whose parents disappear on New
Year's Eve when Mom goes to the kitchen for
eggnog, Dad goes out to the woodshed for
firewood...and neither come back. Over the
course of the series the Eights, as they are
known, have to solve the mystety behind the
twin disappearances while keeping the rest of
the world from finding out that eight little
girls are home alone. The first two volumes
are slated to hit the shelves in fall
2008. In more recent news, I was
excited to
see the cover for my next YA book go up on
Amazon. The book is called
Secrets
of My Suburban Life and is about a girl whose
novelist mother gets crushed to death by a
stack of Harry Potter books. When her father
moves the family to CT in the wake of the
tragedy, Ren becomes involved in a sort-of
mystery involving an online predator. It goes
on sale January 8, but is available for
preorder now." To find out more, visit
Lauren's website: http://www.laurenbaratzlogsted.com/
Betsy Amster Literary Agency
Betsy
Amster writes in: "The news from my end
is that I've started handling some
interesting graphic work-sold a graphic
memoir called THE SHINIEST JEWEL: A FAMILY
LOVE STORY by Marian Henley to Springboard (a
division of Grand Central, formerly known as
Warner) and a graphic diet book called THE
BIG SKINNY: HOW I CHANGED MY FATTITUDE by
Carol Lay to Villard. Very very very fun.
THE SHINIEST JEWEL will be out in Fall '08
and THE BIG SKINNY will be out in January '09."
