7 Gypsies StickersMonochromatic Photos Can Enhance Any Layout

We thought it would be nice to share some of our favorite scrapbooking tips with everyone in the next few editions of our newsletter.  All of us Whimzee's Girls have our own favorite tips that help us get started on our projects, keep us motivated while we're working on our projects and of course those tips that rescue us when we run into problems on our projects.

Our first tip is using sepia or black & white photos in your layouts.  We love using these monochromatic photos in our layouts.  Printing your photos either sepia or black & white allows you to use papers with any color combination or mix of patterns in your layout.  When trying to decide whether to print your photos in color, sepia or black & white, first think about whether the colors in your photos coordinate with your chosen papers.  If the colors coordinate or complement the colors in the papers, color photos may be a good option.  If you aren't happy with how the colors in your photos look with your papers, take a look at the major colors in your papers.  If the colors of your papers are very bright and/or include black, black & white photos are probably going to look the best with your layout.  If the colors of your papers lean toward the brown or yellow, sepia photos will be the best choice.

Take a look at the mini album in the photo.  This is a project that Twila is currently working on.  She chose papers that she really liked for this album.  She wanted to use a lot of small photos in her album and knowing that these photos wouldn't all have coordinating colors, she let her choice of papers guide her.  The colors in this paper collection are muted shades of green, along with brown & cream.  Sepia photos are the perfect choice to coordinate with these papers.  The overall look is calm and serene. Everything in this album mingles nicely, none of the elements stands out too much from the others.

This "mingling" quality is one of the great things about both sepia and black & white photos.  In photos printed in one of these manners, you can really concentrate on the subjects.  Distractions are minimized.  A busy or non-coordinating background doesn't compete with the story the photographer is trying to tell.  The viewer is drawn into the photo by the faces it contains and not the purple & orange striped wallpaper in the background.

I have been drawn to black & white photography since my first days in the darkroom during junior high.  There is something soothing about getting back to basics, allowing yourself to concentrate on the details of a face.  In a world that bombards people with bright, flashy images, monochromatic photos seem to slow down the pace just enough to give us a glimpse of what the photographer was seeing when the image was taken.  To me, it's just an added bonus that these monochromatic photos allow me to let my creativity run wild in my usually pattern-filled scrapbook layouts & projects.

So do yourself a favor and give sepia and black & white photos a starring role in your next layout or project and you may find yourself pleasantly surprised with the results.

girlfriends LayoutUsing Up Your Scrapbook Stash

We know that the cost of everything has become a concern for many people.  And the Whimzee's Girls certainly aren't immune from monetary concerns.  So we thought we'd share a few of our ideas for using up some of your scrapbooking stash on your next project.

Last week, while I was working on a layout that I wanted to feature in my "Layout of the Week" column on my blog, I decided that I would try to use at least one thing from my scrapbooking stash.  So I looked at the papers I'd chosen for this project, a layout which would showcase a very cute photo of Delaney & friends just before catching the Hannah Montana Movie on opening day.

After looking at my papers and my chosen photo, I realized that, although the girls' outfits coordinated perfectly with my papers.  Sadly, the dcor of Red Robin doesn't mesh well with the hot pink, turquoise, orange & lime featured in American Crafts's Teen Collection.  So I relied on one of my favorite tips, "monochromatic photos can enhance any layout." (See above for more on this tip!)  I chose to print my photo in black & white.  (The final product is hanging in the store.)

Noticing that black was prominent in this layout, I searched my stash for black embellishments.  I came across two, both from THICKERS.  I had used both sets of black THICKERS on previous layouts.  I love using black embellishments for their versatility.  I know that when I buy a black embellishment pack, I will find uses for all of the pieces, eventually.  In this layout, I used one piece from THICKERS' Vera Accents black pack.  I had just opened the pack a couple weeks ago for another "Layout of the Week" project.

My stash also yielded THICKERS' Vinyl Letters in black.  I opened this pack last Fall for a Halloween layout featuring Basic Grey's Ambrosia Collection.  I love being able to use alphabet packs for numerous layouts.  With a lot of alphabet packs, in the past, I ended up running out of vowels, not with THICKERS.  With THICKERS, I can make layouts for both Jake & Delaney and not run out of "E"'s.  If you're a scrapbooker with a lot of E names in her family, you know just how exciting that can be!  Finally an alphabet pack where you aren't piecing together an E from an F & an L or any other letters you can find to cut apart & put back together to make an E.

So the next time you're in need of alphabet stickers, give THICKERS a try.  They come in lot's of great colors, fonts & finishes and I promise you'll find more than one use for the pack!  I think it's helpful to keep your favorite, already open, embellishment packs handy.  When you plan your next project, you'll be able pick your papers & embellishments, while glancing at your stash to see what you can add from there to stay within your budget.

All Girl Layout

These layouts are simple and use the cardstock found in the kits as the background for the layouts.  The double-sided, printed papers are cut in 1, 2 & 3 inch strips.  The both sides of the papers are used to give the layouts an extra pattern.  Your title can be cut out in the store with our Accucut, Sizzix or Cricut (see store for prices/details) or at home with your own die cutting system.  These titles were created with the Quickutz system using the Diesel font and its shadow.  Photos can be placed in the large open area on these layouts.  You could place a large photo on the left side and 4 smaller square photos on the right side or vice versa.

Give our new layout kits a try and let us know what you think.  We're considering creating more layout kits in the future and would like to know what kinds of things would make them most helpful to you.
