FACC Staff Changes

As the FACC continues to grow and thrive, we have decided to slightly restructure the staff assignments to better serve our members and the French-American business community. Sara Squires joins the FACC team as our Membership Coordinator.  She will be responsible for regular communications with our members including membership information packets, Annual Membership Directory, renewal reminders, the website and this monthly newsletter. In addition, she will be in charge of the silent auctions for our fundraising events.

Angela Bruns will continue to be the Assistant Director but will also take on the role of Event Coordinator.  Virginie Ganivet will continue to be Executive Director and will focus more time on the development of our CORA Economic Development Partnership.

Sara SquiresBonjour! My name is Sara Squires and some of you may know me from my days working at the Alliance Française de Denver. I took some time off from working to start a family and now have two beautiful children, Nathan and Nora. My past experience with French related work and the non-profit sector make my new position at the French-American Chamber of Commerce a natural transition. I am very excited to be involved with the FACC and I look forward to working with the staff, board and members of such a passionate organization.  Sara can be reached at sara@rmfacc.org.

Interview With A Professional: Edith Samouillet

Edith SamouilletThroughout her vast career in the United States and France, Edith Samouillet has specialized in employee development, career transitioning and talent development. Her international background - having worked all over Europe and in the United States - has contributed to her desire to help those around her to grow and succeed in our global economy. She has been working for the past 9 years for Right Management, an outplacement organization that spans 42 countries. Her recent move to Denver from France has been a pleasant one, and it seems the United States may have gained a new, permanent expatriate.

HC: What is your favorite part of your work?
ES: What I love to do is coaching of course, because it is a long term engagement and you have time to work with people in depth and to help them develop the specific skills. I also like to do long term work with organizations. One of the companies I work with has grown from a very small company to a large company and I've worked with them over the years and I've been able to see people grow. What a reward it is!

HC: What is the biggest factor for a leader of a team to keep in mind in order to be an effective leader?
ES: The balance between results and people. We see many people with very high experience [who] aren't very comfortable in leading people and we know organizations are successful because of people. That's why we do this: because management is critical to the success of an organization. For example, we had a man who we worked with, who was a top performer in his technical area but he was very pushy and dominant and [overall] didn't know how to deal with people. Through coaching exercises, we helped him to learn that to get results from his people, he didn't need to push them down, but to look to their strengths.

HC: What can people do in this uncertain economy to stabilize their situation?
ES: It really depends on which area you are in. Many of the companies I work for are pharmaceutical companies that are not doing too badly right now. [In fact], one of them is developing a new product that doesn't exist anywhere else and so they are leaders in their market. [If you can] find your niche and develop it well, you've taken the first essential step.

Taking Transportation to New Heights

The French-based cable car company Pomagalski, or Poma, is taking cable car transportation to new heights. Originally developed in the 1930s as a chair lift and cable car service for winter sports resorts in the French Alps, Poma has extended its services to tourism and transportation on a global scale.

In Beijing, Poma has begun work on capsules for the "big wheel," which will be the world's largest Ferris wheel, set to open in 2010. The wheel is composed of 48 air-conditioned capsules which will each hold up to 40 people. Not your average Ferris wheel ride, the capsules will also be used as reception rooms for business meetings, cocktail parties, weddings, and other events. Similar projects have included capsules for the London Eye Ferris wheel in London and sight-seeing cable cars in Jordan, Australia, Vietnam, and Educador, among others. In Rio de Janeiro, Poma has installed mechanical cable lifts to act as an alternative to underground transportation systems. Similar transportation systems have been built to serve Medellin in Colombia, Taipei, and Taiwan.

As Poma continues to reach out to markets worldwide, one of its newest endeavors is equipment renewal. Company president Jean Gauthier explains, "We don't rebuild them exactly as they were. Renewal involves fewer cars with greater capacity, needing fewer pylons, which reduces the visual impact and allows us to make our contribution to safeguarding the environment." One of Poma's latest projects is the rebuilding of the Roosevelt Island Tramway in New York. Poma hopes to improve the current tramway system while still maintaining the original structure. New features include creating a gap between cable cars to increase stability in windy conditions, and creating a new, innovative safety system. Poma's current success in the U.S. is the fruit borne from an already longexisting relationship. The detachable chair lifts found throughout winter sports resorts are so widespread that they are referred to as "Poma lifts."

Colorado's Economy: How Do We Rate?

On Wednesday, June 10 Scott Bemis, president & publisher of the Denver Business Journal offered an insiders look as to how the Denver economy is faring compared to the rest of the country.  The event was held at the Ritchie Center on the University of Denver campus.  Scott touched on trends seen over the years, comparing them to what we are currently experiencing as well as how different industries look.  He spoke about many positive things going on in our city and state which was a refreshing change from what has been in the news.  Guests participated in the intimate presentation as well as the Q&A session afterward while enjoying a light breakfast.  Many attendees were so engaged in lively discussions with those at their table that they stayed well after the event had ended.  Thank you again to all who attended and participated as well as to the Denver Business Journal and Scott Bemis.
