French-American Cooperation: Accelerating Energy Solutions

AMPING up its electric-vehicle strategy, Ford Motor Company announced on February 3 that Johnson Controls-Saft, a joint US-French venture, will supply batteries for its first production plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Johnson Controls- Saft, already a battery supplier for Mercedes-Benz and BMW hybrid vehicles, will produce lithium-ion battery systems that yield 120 miles per gallon. The electricity provided will subsist for 30-40 miles before a car taps into its gasoline-powered engine.

Johnson ControlsThe Johnson Controls-Saft company contracted a five-year deal with Ford, where they will manufacture the batteries in France and assemble the battery system in the United States. Johnson Controls Power Solutions president, Alex Molinaroli, applauded the agreement, stating that, "As the United States works to build a manufacturing infrastructure and supply base for hybrid and electric vehicles, this contract signals significant progress for our industry here." The accord combines Johnson Controls's strong American presence as the largest maker of automotive batteries with the expertise of the French corporation Saft in battery technology and energy solutions.

The lithium-ion battery system designed and manufactured by Johnson Controls-Saft includes cells, mechanical, electronic, and thermal components. The five-year supply is intended for a target of 5,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles to be released each year, starting in 2012. "The battery is a critical piece of electrifying vehicles," commented Nancy Gioia, Ford director of Sustainable Mobility Technologies and Hybrid Vehicle Programs, "Johnson Controls-Saft is one of the leaders focused on creating lithium-ion batteries for an affordable new generation of vehicles."

Interview with a Professional: Yolanda Duperret

Yolanda Duperret Yolanda Duperret is as enthusiastic a learner as she is eager a teacher and helper. From the time she was very young, she encountered people from different cultures and settings all over the world, living in Germany, the United States and Spain. The circumstances of having a Mexican father, Spanish mother and later marrying her husband of French origin lead her to speaking French, Spanish, and English - picking up Portuguese later on. These experiences led her to work as an international banker for 15 years with CoBank, an agricultural cooperative bank. Presently working as a business coach at Action Coach, she is able to take her vast knowledge of culture, business, finance and marketing and aide businesses in these troubled economic times.

HC: What are some of the biggest challenges businesses are facing today?
YD: On the whole, their issues are going to involve cash flow, the lifeblood of any business. In these economic times, many businesses have lost some of their customers or their revenue. [Additionally], many businesses are not measuring their results financially and as a result are not managing their business. In fact, their business is managing them! You cannot manage what you don't measure. It's not about working harder but rather smarter.

HC: What are some things businesses can do to stay afloat in this unpredictable economy?
YD: The first thing would be to keep in touch with your client base. It's about being proactive in reaching out to them and creating a solid database of contacts, of prospects, of clients and make sure that the limited dollars they have to spend, they spend with you. Don't give them any opportunity to go somewhere else because it's cheaper. It's all about going back to creating that relationship, that emotional connection that really stands out. It's all about the personal touches - whether it's sending them a newsletter or sending them a postcard - and these are all inexpensive things to not only retain existing clients but generate new leads. [Secondly,] look where you can save money and have a basic understanding of your financials: understand the score board. Business is a game: if you don't have a score board, how do you know you're winning? You have to keep score.

HC: How has speaking multiple languages facilitated your success in helping businesses?
YD: It's really about creating a bridge between the cultural barriers, the cultural divides and unless you have communication, the foundation for any relationship, it makes it even more difficult. It's hard enough when you speak the same language! For example, I did a "team alignment" (a day long workshop intended to align the team-members not only with each other but importantly with the vision & mission of the business owner) for a business recently where a large part of their staff was Spanish speaking. [For the meeting,] we translated all the materials [for the Spanish speakers] and did simultaneous translation throughout, so they could feel like they had a voice and they could say what was on their mind. At the end of the day they were so very thankful -many for the first time really made [them] feel like [they] were part of a team and team is the most important asset of any business. If those team synergies aren't there you can be assured that this will affect the bottom line in opportunity losses or, worse, profit losses.
