Message from our Executive Director

Virginie GanivetDear Members,

I hope you enjoy the summer and you have time to relax.

The first half of 2008 was filled with a variety of events, the high point being our annual L'Esprit de France Gala combined with the presentation of the annual "L'esprit de France Awards for Contribution to French-American Businesss". The awards were presented to Rick Spear, CEO of Leitner-Poma and Robert Joyce, CEO of Wheelabrator Group.

Fall is around the corner and we are starting the preparation of the 10th annual Beaujolais & Beyond Festival which gathers over 500 guests each year.

We are shaping up the development of CORA, a sister organization of the FACC, which primary mission is to facilitate cross-border investment between Colorado and the Rhone-Alpes region of France. We are happy to announce that Dr Jean-Pierre Joly, head of the Department of Solar Technologies at INES (French National Solar Institute), will be coming from Grenoble (Rhone-Alpes) to be a speaker at the Nano Renewable Energy Summit in July and will be visiting Colorado companies.

And for last, we are proud to announce that CH2MHILL, a Fortune 100 company, the global leader in engineering, constructions and operations, has just joined the FACC as a Ambassador Member.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

Sincerely,

Virginie Ganivet

Being A Leader Across Borders: A Specific State of Mind

The following excerpts were taken from an article written by Edith Samouillet, Vice President, Organizational Cosulting with Right Management.  To view the entire article, click here.

Leadership requires a vision, a calling, a grasp of the future as well as the capacity to carry people along.

The Person Centered Approach focuses on the human interrelationships without which business cannot be accomplished. The core conditions of PCA--congruence, empathy and unconditional positive regard-when actively practiced and applied to the tasks of leading across borders, can highly support leaders to face particularly the relationship of leader to follower. Leaders must gain the commitment of others to make their vision a reality, and it is quite a challenge in an unknown and foreign environment.

But let us demonstrate how these skills can increase the performance of the leader across borders.
1. Congruence
The purpose of Congruence is manifesting your experience in the world through language. The synonyms are centred, genuine, authentic and real. The process of congruence is the following:
  • I manifest my experience need more structure" instead of saying" you have no structure"
  • I take full responsibility for my experience in moving consciously from "You have no structure." to "I need more structure".
  • I don't blame others for my experience and I take the full responsibility of my need of structure instead of "accusing" others of not giving it to me.
  • A non-congruent statement would be: "I am uncomfortable because you have no structure". I make the other person responsible for my own discomfort.
  • A congruent statement would be: "I need more structure".
 - - -

Some questions linked to the skills can help the leader and his organization prepare to be a leader across borders:

Leader Across Borders

 - - -

Being a leader across borders implicitly states what you decide to be is still more important than what you do. One of my friends recently shared with me her definition of Leadership that I really like: "Stand up (commitment), step up (be the first to show up from the crowd) and speak up (express yourself)".
