Highlighting best practices for drop out recovery: A spotlight on YouthBuild

YouthBuild programs operate as charter schools, alternative schools or GED programs that engage unemployed young men and women, most of whom have dropped out of high school and all of whom come from low-income backgrounds. YouthBuild enables them to serve their communities by building by building affordable housing and assists them in transforming their own lives and roles in society. Many YouthBuild students face serious barriers including substance abuse, foster care, juvenile justice, welfare dependency, homelessness, child care responsibilities with little to no family support. Despite these hurdles, 76 percent of graduates are placed into jobs after completing the program.
