Greetings!,

The beginning of the school year is always an exciting time here at ACS.  In our On-Campus Counseling Program, staff return to the eight campuses we serve and our interns report for duty.  As you'll read in this issue, it's not an easy gig to get - and once our interns are selected, they are in store for a year of extensive training, supervision, and hours spent working with teens who need their help.  In the Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Program and After-School Counseling Program, the pace picks up as families return from summer vacations.

While returning to school is often an exciting event, it can cause stress and anxiety in others.  Know that should your child need someone to help them through this time of transition, ACS is here and ready at a moment's notice with a team of 50 therapists in our three programs.

Wishing you all a wonderful new school year!

Dr. Philippe Rey

Sincerely,

Dr. Philippe Rey

Executive Director

2012-2013 On-Campus Counseling Program Staff
As the first day of school draws near, our On-Campus Counseling (OCC) Program begins its annual preparations. During the 2012-2013 school year, the OCC Program will have 29 interns and 8 site directors at the 8 campuses we serve. Of the 29 interns, 9 are returning and 20 are new recruits.
ACS' interns are a select group, chosen after a rigorous interview process which spans from January to March. Applicants come from top graduate schools throughout California and are required to have  clinical and/or volunteer experience with children or teens; experience working a crisis hotline, residential, or school setting; experience with Child Protective Services reporting and suicide assessments; and must have completed several specific graduate courses.
Once interns are hired for the year and placed at a particular school, the real training begins. ACS' interns are required to: attend a rigorous 2 day orientation; attend weekly clinical trainings on subjects such as Self Harm, Grief Counseling, Substance Abuse, and LGBTQQ; and are required to complete 1 hour of individual supervision AND 2 hours of group supervision provided by a licensed clinician each week.  Each school campus we serve has a dedicated site director, who is a licensed clinician.

To learn more about the OCC Program, visit our website or contact Roni Gillenson, LMFT, OCC Program Director.
5 Tips for Preparing for School
Article from Better Health Channel

  1. Be positive and enthusiastic. Your child is more likely to look forward to starting high school if you're positive about it.
Encourage your child to talk about their feelings. They may be anxious about making the transition to high school or they may experience difficulties settling in once they start. Reassure them that it's normal to have mixed feelings about starting a new school.
  2. Attend orientation events.
  3. Find a school buddy for your child. This may be a neighbors' child or an older playmate. Some high schools have their own 'buddy system' where older children at the school look out for new students.
  4. Understand the school routine. Being familiar with timetables, scheduled breaks and start or finish times can help your child to know what to expect from their school day.
  5. Figure out the travel route. Talk with your child about how they will get to and from school and explore the route with them a few times before they start. Practice travelling to and from school. If they're walking or catching public transport, go with your child or arrange someone else to accompany them until they are confident with travelling on their own.
