Greetings!,

This month is full of activity for ACS and the communities that we serve. We are happy to announce that as of May 1, 2012, ACS will have an active info line for teens, parents and community members to call for information and resources about substance abuse.  The line is named SAIL or Substance Abuse Info Line and is available in conjunction with the Esther's Pledge Substance Abuse Workshops, which also begin in May. To learn more about these new services you can go to our website.

ACS will also be hosting our final "Breaking the Stigma" forum of the 2011-2012 school year. The topic will be about adolescents leaving the nest and Martha Chan, LMFT, the On-Campus Counseling Site Director at Terman Middle School will be the keynote speaker.  To get more details click here.

Lastly, the month of May brings with it such nice weather so I encourage everyone to step outside and enjoy it.

Dr. Philippe Rey

Sincerely,

Dr. Philippe Rey

From the Inside-A Day in the Life of an Intern:
After-School Counseling Program
By:Jolla Delos Santos, MFT Intern
A typical day at ACS...The After-School Program Counselor paces to and from the art therapy room and the intern area approximately 30 minutes prior to her upcoming session in attempt to plan a productive and focused session.

The counselor formulates the idea for the client to do a family portrait and a genogram. Having the client draw the family is a technique used to help the counselor understand how the client views his or her family. The genogram is a psychological family tree, "a graphic representation of the personalities and interplay of generations within a family, used to identify repetitive patterns of behavior." 30 minutes pass and it is now 4:00pm. The doorbell rings and the counselor greets the client at the door...
