Greetings!
The 2009-2010 school year proved to be an extremely busy one for ACS. In addition to increasing preventive education efforts through our "Breaking the Stigma" forum series and new informative blog, improving visibility on our school campuses and collaborating with a long list of individuals and groups in response to tragedy, ACS saw a dramatic increase in programs or sessions in all three of its core programs.
I invite you to read this edition of our e-news for more details on these increases, back to school tips, and recent news articles featuring ACS. I also hope you will consider joining us at our upcoming ACS Professionals Mixer this Thursday, August 12.
While this year has been difficult, we at ACS are pleased to see the growing number of teens and families discussing mental health and substance abuse issues more openly and seeking help when necessary. ACS is so proud to have the support of our community, allowing us the capacity to meet this growing need. We encourage you all to continue addressing these topics, talking openly about mental and emotional health. We look forward to another year of helping teenagers find their way!

Program Update: ACS' Busiest Year Ever
|
On-Campus Counseling Program
The On-Campus Counseling Program, which provides free on-site counseling at eight area schools,
witnessed an increase of over 500 counseling sessions and over 1,000 additional
intern hours logged from the previous school year. Additionally, there was a 22
percent increase in students admitting to suicidal ideation in pre-treatment
analyses. Program Director Roni Gillenson partially attributes this increase to
more open communication between parents and teenagers following the tragedies
at Gunn High School. "These issues may have been
there before," she explained, "but now there's more permission to talk about it
and seek treatment."
After-School Counseling Program
The After-School Counseling Program,
which provides affordable individual, group and family therapy in English,
Spanish and Mandarin, nearly doubled its number of clients in the 2009-2010
school year and increased financial aid to families by more than $20,000.
Program Director Katie Luce believes that both the amplified visibility of ACS
within the community and ongoing economic instability have led to more people
reaching out to ACS for assistance. "When parents contact me, they have often
already exhausted other possibilities such as their own insurance or private
therapists," she stated. "We're providing high-quality services during flexible
hours at an extremely low rate. This type of accessibility is clearly meeting a
need in the community."
Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Program
The Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Program, which offers affordable outpatient assessment and treatment
for teens and their families struggling with addiction, experienced an 82
percent rise in clients and also increased its financial assistance to families
by over $20,000. Program Director Brenda Stern believes that these startling
numbers should not alarm parents: "There is a heightened sense of awareness in
our community which has resulted in more families seeking treatment for issues
that had previously been unnoticed or neglected," she explained, "and the kids
entering treatment were further along in the addiction process because of
this."

Back to School Tips
|
As teens reluctantly head back to school and leave the lazydays of summer behind, we are reminded of the stress that lies ahead for our youth. While returning to school can be an exciting time to get reacquainted with friends and teachers, it can also be the start of what may be some of the most stressful times of their lives. In these first few months of school, it is important for both students and parents to become aware of how stress can impact teenagers and learn ways to manage stress before it becomes overwhelming for them. Because one of the main causes of stress for teens is academic pressure, we all need to look very carefully at how our teens are managing in school to be able to help them.
