Greetings!

Bishop's Blog
Being Church Together

Beloved in Christ in the Rocky Mountain Synod,

In this first month as a bishop, two key thoughts about what it means to be church together keep coming back to me. They're not new thoughts, and they're certainly not complex. Yet if we take these two ideas seriously, I think they have the power to be transformational. Note that while the focus here is on the congregational context, these thoughts can easily be applied to other areas of ministry within our synod.

Thought #1:  What you do as a congregation - and as rostered leaders in a congregation - you do on behalf of the whole church.

Thought #2:  The whole church has a vested interested in what you do as a congregation - and as rostered leaders in a congregation.

This is basic Body of Christ stuff: no part of the Body exists in isolation from the whole - and the whole of the Body is shaped by its individual members.  It seems to me that this applies whether we're talking about the Church Universal or the church as a human institution...

WORSHIP at the OFFICE OF THE BISHOP
Rocky Mountain Synod logo
Office of the Bishop to celebrate weekly Eucharist each Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

Beginning Wednesday, September 12, the staff in the Rocky Mountain Synod Office of the Bishop, along with others who desire to attend, will gather for a eucharist worship. Pastors from the synod will be welcomed to lead the worship. We are still working out the details for scheduling.

New Staff for the Rocky Mountain Synod

With some coats of paint and some shuffling of office furniture and people the synod office is being prepared for the new staff to get settled in. We welcome Pastor Sarah Moening as Synod Minister for Deepened Discipleship, Pastor Ron Roschke as the Synod Minister for Shared Ministries and Pastor Rob Moss as Synod Minister for Expanding Vision (in the role of ELCA Director for Evangelical Mission, which he is filling half-time through early 2013 while he works half-time at Church of the Master, Lakewood, in an interim shared arrangement.)

Welcome new staff in the Office of the Bishop!

New worship/conference room will have a view of the world outside... and a piano!

The staff in the Office of the Bishop have been envisioning new ways to use the various office rooms. The corner room with windows will soon become a worship/conference room. Additionally, a piano is already in place! An opportunity arose for us to store a piano for someone in transition, and we are very excited about adding piano accompaniment to worship, since several staff members play piano.

to Malaria Campaign!

The Faster Pastors team is gearing up to begin their 189-mile relay race supporting the ELCA's Malaria Campaign on September 7 and 8, 2012. Please keep Pastors Wendy Kalan, Paul Judson, Leta Behrens, Matthew Bolz-Weber, Daniel Smith, Chad Kohlmeyer, Scott McAnally, Michael Stadtmueller, Bruce Kuenzel, Joel Pancoast, Sonja Pancoast and Brigette Weier in your prayers. Ten of the 12 runners have never participated in a relay like this, so your prayers will help curb their nerves and encourage them to enjoy the three legs they will each run and support a good cause.

You still can support this group of runners by supporting the ELCA Malaria Campaign through your local congregation or by donating through the PayPal link above!

RTLC: opportunity to purchase their site!

Your help is vital!

Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp has the opportunity of a lifetime! The camp is on leased Federal land and has been since its inception. They now have the opportunity to purchase non-federal land that the forest service wants and then exchange it with the forest service to own their site!

Rainbow Trail Land banner But there is a catch.  They will need to raise approximately $350,000 by December 7, 2012 to secure this non-federal land. So they need your help. Already, over $120,000 has been raised but they need your help to keep the momentum going to reach their goal.
