August 21, 2012
Greetings!
Summer Budget Update
from the RMS Vice President

As Vice President of the Rocky Mountain Synod, Linda Bobbitt wants to give you a brief update on the current state of the RMS Budget.

Transition Expenses:
The transition budget that passed at the synod assembly allowed for $145,000 in expenses. Creating the budget was challenging because there were so many unknowns. Some of the expenses are related to events (election, appreciation, installation), others related to staff who might be leaving (severance, vacation, contracts for training/overlap period, etc.) and still others related to staff who might be coming (moving, office equipment, furniture as needed, etc.). As of mid July we have spent approximately $8,900. Most of the anticipated expenses have not yet happened, however we now have a much clearer picture of what to expect. I am glad to inform you that we are right on track. Barring any unforeseen events, we expect to come in under the budget when the transition is complete.

Congregational Giving:
The chart below shows congregational giving to the Rocky Mountain Synod from 2004 to present.  The data is summarized into three groups: the average giving from 2004-2008 (before the economic crisis), 2009-2011 (during and after the crisis) and this year to date.

It is not surprising that the average after the economic crisis is lower than it was before. What is disconcerting is that 2012 shows no sign of recovery. In fact congregational giving last June represented the lowest income of any month since 2004...

OUR LIFE TOGETHER
Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Holy God, your word feeds your people with life that is eternal. Direct our choices and preserve us in your truth, that, renouncing what is false and evil, we may live in you, through  Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Madagascar Trip 2013

Worship, eat, sing, study, dream and live with your amazing sisters and brothers in Madagascar!

Join us for our three-week trip next summer. Our Companion Synods are waiting for us to visit and this trip can change your life.

Madagascar 2011 trip Bishop Jim Gonia will be going with up to twenty-four people from the Rocky Mountain Synod-adults and youth. We will travel in teams to all four of our companion synod sites in northern Madagascar. One team will work with a National Youth Camp of the Malagasy Lutheran Church. Another team will share in a Theological Conference with the pastors of our partner synods. And all of us will gain a deeper appreciation of the dimensions of the Body of Christ as we share life and grace in God's family.

Estimated cost for the trip is $5,700. Plans are still being worked out, and the final cost could be somewhat more or less. The tentative dates are June 29 - July 20, 2013. Applications with a refundable $100 application fee are due at Synod office by September 15. Find the additional information and forms on the synod's website.

Walking Together with Madagascar Synods

Here's a chance to host a Malagasy friend this September!

Pastor Daniel from Madagascar Pastor Daniel Rakotoarijaona is coming to the Rocky Mountain Synod to represent the Malagasy Lutheran Church at Bishop Gonia's installation. He will be on our territory September 17 to October 3. We would like him to experience our life and help your congregation to enter the wonder of accompaniment. Would your community like to host Pastor Daniel for a day? Your sewing circle, confirmation class, book group or choir rehearsal is the perfect setting. We will try to pick some activities that limit travel and maximize his time with us; we plan to cluster his activities in one geographic area at a time, for instance:

  • September 18 - 20 (Tuesday - Thursday): Denver metro area
  • September 21 - 26 (Friday - Wednesday): Synod Council, Bishop's Installation and Theological Conference
  • September 27 - 29 (Thursday - Saturday): Colorado Springs and south
  • September 30 - October 2 (Sunday - Tuesday): Northern Colorado and Wyoming

Please contact Pastor Ron Roschke at rroschke@rmselca.org to let him know if you are interested.

A Lutheran Slow-pitch Softball Tournament

You are cordially invited to participate in Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains Slow-pitch Softball Tournament that will take place on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at the Kennedy Softball Complex. The cost will be $100 per team (approximately 10 players per team ... $10 per player).  Even if your church doesn't have a softball team, you have over 2 months to pull one together; and being an all-star caliber team is not a requirement. This will be a co-ed, 16 team tournament - a great event for an even greater cause.  Be a part of it.  In the meantime, start organizing your church team.  Please feel free to contact Aaron Schultz by email or phone (559-920-0476) if you'd like to register your team or if you have any general questions or comments.

Recently adapted into a film, "Leaps and Bounds" continues to inspire individuals and communities to consider their response to the ecological and economic crises now upon us. A time to reflect on the presentation will follow.

Using a number of creative tools including storytelling, song, poetry, prayer, movement, and music, this work of theater sheds light on the unsustainable strain of our economic system, while awakening the imagination to a new way of living with and relating to Earth. Grounded in theological reflection, Leaps and Bounds, embodies an adventure both visceral and thought-provoking, asking for a reckoning and a reclaiming of the values that promote human well-being and ecological health. Check out the flyer to download and post.
