Greetings!

Bless this time of ending and beginning...

"You watch over our going out and our coming in:
bless this time of ending and beginning.
You surround your people in every time and place:
keep us close in your love."

--Pastor Kevin Maly, blessing Bishop Allan Bjornberg on Friday, July 27. Bishop Bjornberg's term concludes today, July 31. We send him on his way with joy, prayers, and thanksgiving. (Photo by Dale Horkey)

PRAYERS OF THANKSGIVING

"He has awakened, he is speaking,
and has stood up"

Pastor Ruby Narucki, Rejoice, Erie, CO, writes that the grandnephew of members of her congregation who was wounded in the Aurora shooting is progressing well. She writes:

"There has been good news about Yousef. Yousef is the 16 year old young man that we have been praying for. He suffered grievous injuries in the theater tradegy. He has awakened, he is speaking, and has stood up. The bullet remains lodged in his brain. It remains unclear wether it can ever be removed. We continue to pray for a full recovery and thank God for his remarkable progress thus far."

OUR LIFE TOGETHER
Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
O God, eternal goodness, immeasurable love, you place your gifts before us; we eat and are satisfied. Fill us and this world in all its needs with the life that comes only from you, through  Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Making Youth's Dreams Come True

The Mission Investment Fund (MIF), a financial ministry of the ELCA, helped nearly 150 teens and adult leaders realize their dreams of attending the recent ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans. MIF provided a $100,000 grant to help pay for registration, travel, lodging and meals for the participants of 20 congregations in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands who depended on financial assistance to attend the Youth Gathering.

One pastor told MIF: "We originally had no hope of going to the Youth Gathering. Then, with the Mission Investment Fund's gift, there was hope."

The Mission Investment Fund offers a diverse portfolio of investment products-with a range of terms, with fixed or adjustable rates, and all earning at competitive rates. With these investment dollars, the Mission Investment Fund makes loans for vital capital projects to ELCA congregations and ELCA-related ministries. To learn more, visit us online at www.elca.org/mif or call toll-free at 877-886-3522.

Lutherans Stoked Their Flames to Benefit Fire Victims

On Saturday, July 14, 2012, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., in true western style, local Lutherans and members of the Dutch Oven Group joined forces with Ascension Lutheran Church in Cheyenne, Wyoming to provide relief for the victims of the recent wild fires in Wyoming and Colorado.

Dutch oven cooking pot image The Cheyenne Dutch Oven Group cooked and also demonstrated the fine art of Dutch Oven Cooking, and served up some seriously good grub at the first "Douse the Flames" fundraiser that provided the community with food, faith and fun. There was no charge for the event, which also featured live music from the Ascension Lutheran Church Worship Band and family entertainment, but free-will offerings were accepted. Over $2500 was raised! The amount included a 25% match from Thrivent financial Services.

Keynote speaker, Bill Crapser, the Wyoming State Forester, addressed the issues surrounding the devastating Wyoming fires. Well known for their commitment to organizing assistance to victims of disasters, both locally and nationally, Ascension Lutheran Church members Cindy and Scott Gundy, who also belong to the International Dutch Oven Society helped lead the local Group and spearhead this fundraiser. All money raised goes directly to The Lutheran Disaster Response Fund designated to assist the fire victims, and the American Red Cross Wyoming and Colorado Wild Fire Victims.

For more information on the "Douse the Flames" fundraiser or to donate, please contact Ascension Lutheran Church at 307-634-6575 or email the Church. You may also visit the website. Interested parties may also donate by visiting www.facebook.com/#!/ColoradoForestFireVictims . Please read the entire news release.

LSS of Utah Begins Major Capital Campaign

Future plans of LSS of Utah:
LSS of Utah is currently beginning a six (6) year capital campaign to raise funds to purchase the property it currently leases in Salt Lake City (2013-2018).  As part of the purchase, initial Elder House research integrates assistive technology (already paid for by LCMS women); a raised bed garden will be created along with a senior food pantry; plus there will be the Sunflower Cafe which has music, art, and various activities for seniors and those lovingly connected to seniors, and catered meals by refugees with food permits.

Monies for the project will be held in a Mission Investment Fund account; and oversite of the fund rests with the LSS of Utah Board of Trustees. There will be room for a mission congregation (Christian) as well: Friday through Sunday.  LSS of Utah ministries remain inter-faith and community-wide (see: www.lssu.org).   Please email any questions to: www.LSSUtah@yahoo.com.

Current Needs (in order) for the Project:

Pro-Bono Asphalt

Pro-Bono Electrician

Check Donations (made out to Lutheran Social Service of Utah with memo reading Elder Center and Sunflower Cafe)

Pro-Bono building architect

Trinity Care Center Update
Just a quick update to say that Trinity Care Center in Salt Lake City, Utah is open for frail seniors or people who are disabled without resources and need extended care.  The Center is owned and managed by an LCMS couple, Debbie and Mike Johnson, who attend St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ogden!  LSS of Utah is about 5 minutes away from the Center.  To call for a tour or to see about openings:  801-485-9007.  The address is: 3094 South State Street, SLC, Utah, 84115.  Debbie Johnson is very adept in helping families apply for Medicare/Medicaid.
