An open house will take place on Friday, July 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the large first floor conference in the synod office building. At 3 p.m., a brief liturgy of sending will take place. Bishop Bjornberg's term concludes on July 31. Stop by to express a word of gratitude. For our planning, please RSVP by Wednesday, July 25, that you will be attending. RSVP now

 PRAYERS OF SORROW AND LAMENT

"Sigh's too deep for words"

As we continue to be shaken and sorrowful by the events that unfolded in Aurora, Colorado, last Friday, we pray for the families of those who lost loved ones, for those who remain hospitalized, for caregivers and emergency personnel who have attended to the dying and suffering, and for the one who committed the atrocity.

We pray for Yousef Gharbi, grandnephew of Jim and Sue Bettger, who are members of Rejoice Lutheran Church in Erie, Colorado. Yousef was wounded at the theater with a bullet lodged in the brain and shrapnel lodged in his neck. Pastor Ruby Narucki shares that his prognosis is still uncertain.

Please take time to read the Open Letter, written by Pastor Meghan Aelabouni, Trinity, Ft Collins and shared in the Huffington Post.  If you don't know what to say or where to begin in talking about this tragedy with your congregation, Pastor Meghan gives us a place to begin.

Lutherans Stoked Their Flames to Benefit Fire Victims

On Saturday, July 14, 2012, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., in true western style, local Lutherans and members of the Dutch Oven Group joined forces with Ascension Lutheran Church in Cheyenne, Wyoming to provide relief for the victims of the recent wild fires in Wyoming and Colorado.

Dutch oven cooking pot image The Cheyenne Dutch Oven Group cooked and also demonstrated the fine art of Dutch Oven Cooking, and served up some seriously good grub at the first "Douse the Flames" fundraiser that provided the community with food, faith and fun. There was no charge for the event, which also featured live music from the Ascension Lutheran Church Worship Band and family entertainment, but free-will offerings were accepted. Over $2500 was raised! The amount included a 25% match from Thrivent financial Services.

Keynote speaker, Bill Crapser, the Wyoming State Forester, addressed the issues surrounding the devastating Wyoming fires. Well known for their commitment to organizing assistance to victims of disasters, both locally and nationally, Ascension Lutheran Church members Cindy and Scott Gundy, who also belong to the International Dutch Oven Society helped lead the local Group and spearhead this fundraiser. All money raised goes directly to The Lutheran Disaster Response Fund designated to assist the fire victims, and the American Red Cross Wyoming and Colorado Wild Fire Victims.

For more information on the "Douse the Flames" fundraiser or to donate, please contact Ascension Lutheran Church at 307-634-6575 or email the Church. You may also visit the website. Interested parties may also donate by visiting www.facebook.com/#!/ColoradoForestFireVictims . Please read the entire news release.

Volunteers Get the Work of the Church Done at the Utah Food Bank

On Monday, July 16, 2012, Lutheran Social Service of Utah and youth from Hope Lutheran Church in Montana came together at the first joint food service day to represent 38 people willing to give of themselves.

Every Thursday, and some Tuesdays in the summer too, the Utah Food Bank provides a majority of foods that LSS of Utah gives to refugee and first generation families.  LSS of Utah is the most diverse site in terms of faith and ethnicity/race and extremely low-income contexts.  Over 300,000 take-home-to prepare meals are provided to over 96,000 people, mostly children.

It is so important for us to meet each other.  All of the refugees present that day had been through genocide and civil war in their countries. Many suffer from post-traumatic war syndrome daily.  Many face poverty in the United States for a few generations. Read more about the work being done.

LSS Utah Begins 2012 Spanish Classes

Lutheran Social Service of Utah is offering Spanish Courses - during Fall 2012. Mr. Jose Bonilla, Spanish Language Instructor and Professional Guitarist will be the instructor. Classed will take place every Wednesday from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. from September 12 through November 14, 2012. No registration is needed - just come by at 1:00 p.m. each Wednesday to learn and have fun.

Mr. Bonilla has taught continuing education Spanish courses at the University of Utah, Salt Lake Community College, and for Utah Transit Authority Employees. He enjoys bringing music, poetry and conversation to learning Spanish.

LSS Spanish class image

In 2012, Jose Bonilla celebrates 45 years as a professional, world musician. He began a passionate music career at a very young age singing in his El Salvadorian country barrio with ranchero cumbia musica; followed by professional performances beginning at age 13. Professional performances have taken him around the world, including the smallest country in the world, Rocky Boy Indian Reservation.

Books are available for careful use and are then recycled for the 2013 class. Books and CD's are also available for purchase. The class is Language Focused with one song learned in Spanish each class. It is suggested to listen to Spanish tapes and television at least 3 days during the week to capitalize on each class experience.

A suggested donation is $5.00 per class with all proceeds benefiting LSS of Utah ministries. For more information, you may contact Mr. Bonilla by email or phone (801-703-3274).

The Hayes Memorial Scholarship was established by Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Los Alamos, New Mexico to reward a deserving new ELCA seminarian from the Rocky Mountain Synod. Kaitlin is a "double PK;" both her parents are Lutheran pastors (read her biography for more details).

Bethlehem Lutheran Church Los Alamos Funding for the Hayes Memorial Scholarship is from a generous bequest made in 2009 to Bethlehem from the Hayes family estate. In 2010 the Bethlehem congregation designated one quarter of the Hayes bequest for investment by the church's endowment committee.

In 2012 members of the congregation pledged start up funds for the Hayes seminarian scholarship, the result of which was the selection of Kaitlin who was chosen from a number of qualified applicants provided to Bethlehem by the RMS.
