Walking with

Martin Luther -

A Pilgrimage

Sarah and Andrew Wilson walked from Germany to Italy on foot. They logged more than 1,000 miles over 70 days and sustained no significant injuries, other than the usual aches and pains you'd expect from a long-distance hike.

Why the long journey? The couple wanted to talk about faith and Christian unity with people they met along the way.

Sarah is an ELCA pastor serving as a research professor at the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg, France. She is also editor of the Lutheran Forum. Andrew is a post-doctoral fellow at the Foundation for Interreligious and Intercultural Research and Dialogue, Geneva. He is also a member of the ELCA.

Starting in Erfurt, Germany, Sarah and Andrew walked through Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, ending their trip in Rome. This is exactly the same route Martin Luther took 500 years ago for his pilgrimage there.

During his time, Rome was the center of Christianity. Luther, along with another Augustinian monk from Erfurt, was sent to Rome on business from the order. While there, Luther learned about the selling of indulgences for forgiveness, which didn't make him happy.

Sarah and Andrew call their pilgrimage "Here I Walk," seeking to call attention to Luther and the importance of ecumenism. They set out on foot because "news traveled only as fast the human body could travel in Luther's day," says Sarah. Read more about their pilgrimage.

PEACE NOT WALLS

World Week of Peace image

World Week of Peace in Palestine and Israel

May 29 - June 4, 2011

Joint action for just peace convened by the World Council of Churches

Responding to an urgent need for a peace settlement that secures the legitimate rights and future of both peoples, a week of advocacy and action for a just peace in Palestine and Israel is planned for spring. Congregations and individuals around the globe who share the hope of justice shall unite during the week to take peaceful actions, together, to create a common international public witness. Take a look at some resources.

How to get involved:

  • Praying with churches living under occupation, using a special prayer from Jerusalem.
  • Educating about actions that make for peace, and about facts on the ground that do not create peace, especially settlements in occupied territory.
  • Advocating with political leaders using ecumenical policies that promote peace with justice.

For Rocky Mountain Synod contacts who can help facilitate education and advocacy on peace in Israel/Palestine, please contact the Rocky Mountain Synod Peace Not Walls working group through Jan Miller or 303-332-1263.

Searching for the Intersections of Journalism, Communications and Christianity - A Webinar....

What are the gaps in church communications today? Who is telling the church's story in this multimedia world when church communication departments are shrinking? Can the church challenge the media status quo as part of its call to be both evangelical and prophetic? What gives the church the right and the ability to speak to media these days?

These are just a few of the questions that will be explored in WACC North Americas online webinar, Bridging the Gap: Can a Theology of Communication and Journalism Transform Communications in the Churches?, to be held on Thursday, February 24, 2011, at 12 noon Eastern.

Rev. Erik AlsgaardPresenters Rev. Samuel Wilson Meshack photo Rev. Samuel Wilson Meshack, Principal of Gurukul Lutheran Theological College in India, and  Rev. Erik Alsgaard, a United Methodist pastor in Michigan, will help communications professionals search for the intersections of journalism, communications and Christianity in this age of decreasing communication staffing and increasing demand due to our digital world.

This online seminar is free, but registration is required to reserve your space.

Easter Supplies Drive

Angela Cuillard, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sandy, is working to gather Easter education supplies for refugees at LSS of Utah. Any gently used or new educational items can be coordinated with Angela by email or phone (801-572-3412).  She'll have more ideas for items but some initial thoughts are art supplies, pens, pencils, notebooks, CLIP Boards (we really need these for ESL studies), crayons, markers, highlighters, book bags, etc.

If you would like to give to an education basket to an Agency of  LSS of Utah, we truly need clip boards, fine tip felt pens (for those of us with arthritis), white board markers, 901-xl black and white ink cartridges and 901 color cartridges, art supplies, new computers, etc.  Also, in order to hire our ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher through the summer months (outside of our usual fiscal partnership), we need $100 per week for 3 months or $1300 total.  Contact Angela regarding anything related to this project.

Churches and organizations are invited and encouraged to publish LSS Utah statistics and snapshot of services in their newsletters, post the information on bulletin boards and take the Spring challenge and highlight Lutheran Social Service materials on their website.
