Letter from Principal David Ackerman
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to a new school year. The countdown has begun and the excitement is building. Class lists will be posted the afternoon of August 12th, and the first day of school is August 22nd. The bell schedule has not changed; school begins at 8:10 am.
We have hired several very talented new educators to fill in a maternity leave and several retirements.
- Jayd Almquist is our new art teacher. For the last five years, Mr. Almquist has been teaching elementary school art in Colorado.
- Shantal De Silva will be Oak Knoll's Speech and Language Specialist. Ms. De Silva has been working both in private practice and in elementary schools for several years.
- Christine Pirzadeh will start the year teaching 2nd grade for Ms. Bartlett who will be on maternity leave until December. Ms. Pirzadeh brings twelve years teaching experience to Oak Knoll.
- Emily Chiet is joining our band and orchestra team to provide instruction to both 4th and 5th grade students. Emily is a talented musician who has been teaching for seven years, most recently in Santa Clara.
In addition to our new staff members, we are taking on three new projects.
- Our annual PTO and Foundation fundraising will be combined into one joint campaign. Our school's success depends on the support of both the Foundation and PTO, so I hope you will continue to help provide these vital contributions.
- Our second initiative is designed to help students develop a sense of responsibility for their own learning. October will be a no homework month. During that time we will be working with students to assess their own need for practice, set learning goals, and monitor success. We believe we can create more teacher supervised practice time in class, and at the same time develop a real sense of student ownership and responsibility for practice at home. There will be a lot more information about October in the coming weeks.
- As part of our goal to develop student character, we will be teaching a new life skill each month using multicultural literature. These skills will be spotlighted monthly and visible throughout the school and on the website. Classroom teachers will read, discuss, and develop activities around the selected book representing that month's life skill. Again, more information to follow.
In our continuing efforts to improve communications in electronic format the usual back to school informational flyers and response forms are all linked in our school newsletter. Please take the time to look below to find all the information that applies to your family and your child's registration.
Oak Knoll is an outstanding school because of its dedicated staff and parent community. I can't thank our parents enough for the thousands of ways you have supported Oak Knoll. Because of your involvement and support we continue to grow, provide our students with wonderful enrichment, and maintain the highest academic standards. It's a privilege to be Oak Knoll's principal, and I can't wait for school to begin.

Summer Packet
In our continued effort to go paperless, the Oak Knoll School Summer Mailer is ALL HERE! Below are the documents that you will need to get up to speed for the 2011-2012 school year. These documents, along with the Back To School Checklist, are also on the Oak Knoll Website. The Menlo Park City School District will be sending their forms electronically also - see information below.

MPCSD Forms
This year, the Menlo Park City School District (MPCSD) is handling much of the student Re-Enrollment process online, using a company called Infosnap. During the second week of August, the District will send an email to all families with instructions. Please complete the instructions and submit the mandatory information in a timely manner. If you do NOT receive the District Re-Enrollment information by Aug 12, please email (preferred) or phone 650-321-7140 x5600 with your name and your child's name, school and grade. These are mandatory forms required for all students.

Letter from PTO PresidentWelcome to the 2011-12 school year! My kids are looking at the next couple of weeks with a mixture of sadness (Summer is almost over?!) and excitement (I get to see my friends and teachers!) I am nothing but enthusiastic. I could quip about how it will be nice to have someone else entertain my kids all day long for a change, but really it is about how much I enjoy working with this amazing community of teachers, administrators and parents. We are extraordinarily lucky to have such an innovative administrative staff and talented teachers. Joining them in making Oak Knoll a premier elementary school are hundreds of parent volunteers. Last year parents, grandparents and friends of the school volunteered over 4,000 hours in the classrooms, on the play ground, in the hot lunch kitchen, in the library, on field trips...the list goes on. By spending that time each volunteer becomes an integral part of this community - something that benefits their children in the classroom and out. I encourage you to join them. A full list of PTO committees and activities is available on the PTO Committees page of the Oak Knoll School website. The committee chairs will be out in force at the PTO Back to School Coffee in the gym on Monday, August 22nd beginning at 8:10. They would be delighted to talk with you about the activities they are planning and how you can help. Opportunities to sign up to help in your child's classroom and around campus will be available as well at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 1st. Another way to engage is to attend our Fall Family Picnic, one of the few opportunities for our entire community to get together and have some fun. The picnic will be held on Friday, September 16th and tickets are on sale now. In the meantime, please enjoy your last few days of crazy kids-running-around summer and I look forward to seeing you at Oak Knoll on the 22nd. Jody Buckley PTO President Oak Knoll School
