For those who have visited Africa, you probably understand what I mean when I say that Africa's beauty, raw energy and unique spirit are truly indescribable. Colorful. Magnetic. Beautiful. There are thousands of words that could be used to describe Africa's unique culture, but none of those words do this culturally-enriched continent justice. In order to really discover the true beauty behind Africa's cultural scenes, you must explore them first hand.

Africa Night - Auckland Zoo
Guest Speaker, Claire Vial
 | |
Game-viewing from camp, Uganda
|
If you have always wanted to visit Africa, but don't want to leave town, then come along to Auckland Zoo's annual Africa Night on Sunday, 6 November from 4.30pm to 9.30pm. I will be the guest speaker for the evening, giving a talk about a variety of safari destinations, followed by a slideshow. The evening begins with a behind-the-scenes tour giving visitors the chance to get up close to some of Africa's most spectacular wildlife including lions, hippos, rhinos, and giraffe. To recover after your urban safari, you will move on to the Old Elephant House to enjoy a traditional African dinner where I will present my address. This will be followed by a live auction, which offers you the opportunity to bid for some unique and affordable items. | |

Rachel travelled to Botswana on one of our small group scheduled adventures, and had a wonderful time!
"Botswana was amazing, such great variety to see and experience, extremely well organised. Botswana is definately a place I would recommend, you also get the bonus of going to Victoria Falls and the option to spend some time in South Africa, which was fantastic. The whole trip was really well organised, Claire was very quick with her responses, put me at ease with her knowledge and was able to give great advice. Thanks Claire!"

Waiting Game
The Mara is best known, not for the animals that live in it, but for the animals that cross it twice each year. Yet, lurking in its depths and bathing on its banks is one of Africa's greatest creatures.
The old crocodile sprawls across a shallow rock shelf just a metre from the water's edge. His massive armoured frame is as motionless as the river-sculpted rock. Legs splayed, jaws agape and eyes shrunk to slits, he offers no sign of life.

Secretary Bird, Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
|
November's desktop wallpaper features the Secretary Bird. The Secretary Bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) is a large, mostly terrestrial bird of prey. Endemic to Africa, it is usually found in the open grasslands and savannah of the sub-Sahara. It is in the same family as many other diurnal raptors such as kites, buzzards, vultures, and harriers.

Léopold Sédar Senghor |
The poem "Et nous baignerons mon amie", ("And we shall be bathed, my love") was written by the famous poet and first president of Senegal, Léopold Sédar Senghor (9 October 1906 - 20 December 2001). He was a Sengalese poet, politician, and cultural theorist who served as the first president for two decades (1960-1980). Senghor was the first African elected as a member of the Académie française, the French Academy, which is the pre-eminent French learned body on matters pertaining to the French language. Before independence, he founded the political party called the Senegalese Democratic Bloc. He is regarded by many as one of the most important African intellectuals of the 20th century.
Originally written in French, Et nous baignerons mon amie was translated into English by Gerard Benson.
And we shall be bathed, my love, in the presence of Africa.
Furnishings from Guinea and the Congo, heavy and burnished, calm and dark.
Masks, pure and primeval, on the walls, distant but so present!
Ebony thrones for ancestral guests, for Princes of the Hill Country.
Musky perfumes, thick grass-mats of silence,
Shadowed cushions for lazing, the sound of a spring-of peace.
Mythic tales and far-off songs, voices woven like the strip-cloths of the Sudan.
And then, dear lamp, your kindness in cradling the obsession with this presence,
Black, white, and red: oh, red like the earth of Africa.
