 | | Elephant at sunset, Botswana |
What a difference a month makes! February, normally one of Botswana's wettest months, has been hot and dry save for a few localised thunderstorms. The result has been dramatic as the grasses are already fading to yellow and the water level in the Thamalakane River, that flows through Maun, has dropped substantially.
Suddenly the Elephants and other animals are concentrating around permanent water such as the Khwai River, which is unusual for this time of year. Looks like we can expect some great game-viewing a little earlier than expected this year!

Jane's Journey - A documnetary on Jane Goodall
Saturday, March 5 - Screening at Academy Theatre, Auckland
More than 20 years ago, Dr. Jane Goodall, now 75, decided to give up her career as a primatologist, as well as her private life, in order to devote her entire energy to saving our endangered planet. Since then she's been spending 300 days a year scouring the globe on her mission to spread hope for future generations. She has taken on the responsibilities of a UN Messenger of Peace, has been honoured with countless awards, was appointed "Dame of the British Empire" and was even admitted to the "Légion d'Honneur", the highest decoration of France.
In "Jane's Journey", we accompany her on her travels across several continents, with unprecedented access to her intense and exciting past. From her childhood home in Bournemouth, England, we embark to 'Gombe National Park' on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, in Tanzania, her second home. This is where she began her groundbreaking research nearly half a century ago, and where to this day she still returns every year to enjoy the company of the chimpanzees that made her the internationally recognized activist so loved and deeply respected.
"Jane's Journey" is an intimate portrait of the private person behind the world-famous icon - an exceptional woman, possibly the most fascinating woman of our time, whose scientific breakthroughs are considered to be among the most important of the past 100 years. | | Click here to see a preview of Jane's Journey |
The visual scope of "Jane's Journey" spans a fascinating arc from the beaches of Bournemouth to the flatlands of Nebraska, and from the rainforests of Gombe to the melting glaciers of Greenland, offering spectacular footage of Jane's touching encounters with animals both wild and domestic as well as with humans, from Hollywood celebrities to traumatized children in African refugee camps. Whoever encounters Jane Goodall irrevocably falls under her spell. As The Boston Globe once put it: "To be with Jane Goodall is like walking with Mahatma Gandhi." |

Namibia's entire coastline set to become a national park
Namibia is one of the worlds most beautiful and fascinating countries with a huge variety of scenery to be enjoyed. The apricot coloured sand dunes, the Skeleton Coast with its wrecks and seal colonies, the mountains of Damaraland with its desert adapted animals, petrified forests and ancient rock paintings, the expansive Etosha Saltpan - a shimmering white mass that stretches for miles.... The range of interests is equally wide and the guides in Namibia are multi-disciplined. They are well versed in fauna, flora, astronomy and history.
The Skeleton Coast was an area much feared by seafarers who were regularly driven onto the shore by the onshore winds and confused by the dense fogs caused by cold Antartic current. As you stand on the utterly deserted coastline as the Atlantic breakers crashing in, you can imagine the sense of desolation they must have felt and can still see the shipwrecks littering the coastline and huge seal colonies. Although the landscape is utterly remote, the temperatures are consistently between 25 and 30 degrees. This scenery is some of the most spectacular in Namibia.

| | Mount Longonot, Kenya | Do you know ...
Mount Longonot National Park in Kenya is an extinct volcano and contains crater forest, scenic landscape, and views of Lake Naivasha and the Great Rift Valley.
The name Longonot is derived from the Maasai word Oloonong'ot meaning mountains of many spurs or steep ridges. Longonot National Park covers 52 square km most of it being occupied by Mount Longonot - a young volcano rising to 2,776 metres above sea level. The sides of the mountain have beautiful V-shaped valleys and ridges.
The stony soils have little vegetation but the crater has an impenetrable forest. Due to the nature of the terrain Mount Longonot has no roads and visitors hike to the top and rim of the crater. |
