Happy Love Week

Sure it's a slow winter, but do we despair? No! To liven things up we're getting our events in gear. Please join us, and let us know if you have other fun ideas you'd like to see us roll out in coming weeks!

As you see by our header, we have some cute valentiney art from Jeanne Van Etten, recently of Bookworks but now a full-time artist. (Congrats Jeanne!) She has a studio on Fair Street and a web and Etsy site. She's brilliant and we're thrilled for her!

You may remember that we embraced social media in a pretty big way last year. (If you haven't done so already, please FAN OUR PAGE ON FACEBOOK, and if you're on Twitter, follow @nantucketbooks.)

Lately we've been dabbling with short format videos, which are fun to make and are a great way to show a little personality. Click the image at left or this link to see a rolling collection of valentines from the cozy shop.

Click here for a video from my trip last week to the famous City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco.

Here's a video of our "Lifeguard on Duty" event at Cisco Brewers last summer. Click here for the book.

And another from the fun three-author event we did with Mary Haft, Elin Hilderbrand, and Wendy Roulliard.

Please feel free to share these videos and make them go viral. ;-)

I found out how to do these quick videos through Twitter and with the help of a book called "Get Seen: Online Video Secrets to Building Your Business" by Steve Garfield. Amusingly enough, I met Steve on Nantucket last summer when we had a tweetup at currentVintage!

Dani Henke is not one to be deterred by slow winter doldrums... Au Contraire! As our newly designated "Creative Coordinator", she's not content simply to ramp up our event planning, she's also kicking our blogging up a notch. Her enthusiasm is contagious, her cooking demo skills are practically Food Network-worthy, and her writing is a real treat. Don't miss out on the fun posts she's been contributing to the wide world of the web. Click here for the post where even a painful spelling bee loss turned out all good.

Click here for a page featuring posts about our favorite thing: FOOD! Suzanne, Cristina, & Dani have been busy in the kitchen.

Google Book Previews On Our Website
    Google Preview icon

The American Booksellers Association is working hard to keep us Indies up to speed. The latest cool improvement to our Indiebound website is the addition of Google Previews. See a few examples here

    NPR Music CDs at Bookworks
    NPR Rack

For three or four months now we've been participating in a pilot program NPR has launched with independent bookstores to sell a small selection of "Discover Song" albums.

This month's selection is particularly epic:

    • Wilco - (the album)
    • Elvis Costello - Secret, Profane & Sugarcane
    • Corinne Bailey Rae - The Sea
    • Fanfarlo - Reservoir
    • Various Artists - New Jazz Divas
    • Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
I'm pretty sure there's something on that list for everybody's sweetie.

We load these all into our trusty digital player, so just ask to hear any of them and we'll be happy to oblige. (I can vouch for the Fanfarlo album--our household is presently enjoying it as the storm rages outside. Good times!)

***Please Note: We have a great selection of local cds as well, so be sure to check them out.***

    Putumayo Used CD Sale
    Putumayo CD

As mentioned in the prior paragraph, we have gone digital with our music. This was occasioned by our 200 CD player going kerplooey on us, leaving us with a whole LOT of Putumayo discs on hand.

Our entire stock of Putumayo cds will be on sale until they're gone, so come in early for best selection. Those with cases are a mere $5.00, those without are $3.00. Great world music for a crazy good price!

WANTED: VW Splitty Bus (1967 or older)
    VW Camper Cookbook

Yes It's true - Bookworks is in the market for just the right bus... it needs barn doors and a camper set up (not bench seats). It will have a great next chapter of life pressed into the service of literature. If you know of such a vehicle, please contact Wendy asap.

In the meantime, this little cookbook is unbelievably cool, with full color photos throughout and a 1001 stories in every shot. Love!

    Field Trek
    City Lights Reading Girl
In closing, a quick word about a trip I just took to NYC, San Jose, & San Francisco in the service of the 'works. The journey was bookended by gift shows, where I found loads of fun gifties (...and YES, I can say in truth that new stuff is actually arriving daily on Nantucket in February!). Between those shows I attended the independent booksellers' Winter Institute--held in Silicon Valley--which focussed on the future of traditional bookselling in the digital age. Not surprisingly, there were no easy answers, so the event wavered between exciting and terrifying depending on a person's mood and imagination.

My favorite moment of the trip, however, came during my visit to City Lights Bookstore in SF, where I snapped this picture of a girl reading in the Poetry Room. To me it just captures the quality of reading a book. It's certainly a romantic vision, but it's one I like, and if the time for romance isn't now, then when? Let's keep the dream alive! I want to think that there will be room for both this girl and Nooks/Kindles/iPads in the brave new world.

Despite all the stimulation, I sure was happy when I got to go home. It's easier to appreciate Nantucket when you've been away... one might even say "love, actually". I hope that wherever you are, you're appreciating a little of the calm that this deserted yet peaceful island represents this cold month, and that you're reading a really good book.

    Cheers, Wendy H.

    Too Much Happiness
    Burns in a Boa

Yes indeed, that's our esteemed Mr. Burns, donning festive ostrich antennae in the spirit of good times.

Dick is, in fact, a big fan of Alice Munro. Her new collection of stories is in stock and ready to be read while curled up with a blanket, a fire, and a warm cup of tea or maybe port, with some classical music playing softly in the background and perhaps a pet on your feet... ahh, February!
