Greetings!
Isn't this a great sign? I spotted it in NYC's West
Village when I was in the city for Toy Fair last
month. I
had a great time there, touring bookstores and
walking around shooting videos with my Flip camera
(thanks for the tip, Capn Tom McGlinn). Check out my
very rough attempts at videography at www.nant
ucketblogworks.com
Also on our blog is my review of the Amazon
Kindle,
the reading device that's taken the media world by
storm. A bookseller needs to know what she's dealing
with, and we need to know what our customers think
about it. We have one at Bookworks, so come check it
out. (My bottom-line advice? Go with an iPhone. See
blog for details.)
If you're a Chamber of Commerce member, stop by
the BAH
(Business After Hours) that we're hosting tonight,
Thursday March 5th, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Should be
fun to see folks start to emerge from winter
hibernation!
Cheers, Wendy Hudson
| Stylin' Bags for a Good Cause |
 |
|
Independent Booksellers have regional trade
associations, and this year the Mountains & Plains
Booksellers Assoc. came up with a fun fundraiser:
these cool messenger bags.
One design reclaims the mud-flap girl image for book
nerds like me everywhere. It's says "Reading Is Sexy",
and we couldn't agree more!
The other design is very hip as well, sort of Day of the
Dead-esque if you will, with its message of "Read Or
Die." Probably more
suitable for guys than the other design, but what do I
know.
We got 5 of each style in - colors vary. They are
a really nice soft canvas, and they retail for a quite
reasonable $40.00 US.
Call us at 508-228-4000 - we'll be happy to ship them
anywhere.

Japanese "Cute Book" style. Needle skills are helpful
but we'll accomodate varying levels of experience.
Class starts Friday March 13th, and we'll continue for
four weeks. We supply the supplies! Cost is $5.00 per
participant per class. Please RSVP if you can via
phone or email: nantucketbookworks@gmail.com

| Little Bee |
 |
|
This is a great book in the way that people felt "The
Kite Runner" was a great book - kind of unpleasant at
times but rewarding in the end.
It tells the story of what happens when the lives of
three characters--a young Nigerian woman known as
Little Bee and a British couple--intersect to
devastating consequence in a violent episode on a
beach. Very thought-provoking in its depiction of the
plight of refugees and the great chasms we live with in
the modern world.

| Addition |
 |
|
"Addition" by Toni Jordan is definitely fiction on a
lighter note than the previous selection. It was one of
the funniest books I've read in a while, with a very
memorable lead character prone to obsessive
counting. Told in her voice, the novel really draws you
in to what it would be like to go through life with an
obsessive compulsion.
When Grace falls in love, her elaborate systems have
to bend and you really identify with her struggles to
keep it together. I read this book months ago as an
advance reader, and thinking back now makes me
want to revisit my crazy counting friend Grace in her
Australian coffee shop fictional world.

| Dog On It |
 |
|
"Dog On It' is our book of the week, so it's 10%
off
in the store or if you call us to order. It's a really fun
detective story told in the voice
of Chet, sidekick to Bernie, an endearing yet
somewhat second-rate detective. The best part is that
Chet is a dog, but even so he's a great writer.
I always love it when I find a book that my husband
Randy likes, and he read this one in about two days
flat. Pretty good for a guy who's always exhausted after
a full day of distilling. (For real... he's moved from
being head brewer at Cisco to making whisky. Handy!)
Anyway, for an entertaining fun read, you can't go
wrong with this puppy.

| 39 Clues #3 The Sword Thief |
 |
|
Kids have been really into the 39 Clues series - they're
fast-paced action books that come with cards to use
for some online sleuthing and puzzle-solving. My kids
love the books and of course they love the computer
games. This series ties the two together nicely.

| Percy Jackson: The Demigod Files |
 |
|
Just in this week, a companion volume for the Percy
Jackson & The Olympians series by Rick Riordan. If
your family hasn't tuned in to these books yet, you're in
for a treat. Greek mythology comes to the USA, with a
teenage demigod hero fighting the tides of evil. Good
fun!
The really big news here, however, is that BOOK 5
of Percy's adventures goes on sale May 5th! Your
kids will be psyched. More info on that as it comes.
Perhaps a toga party will be in order! (Did they wear
togas in Ancient Greece or was that just Rome?
Hmmm)

| Important Request for Sustainable Nantucket |
 |
|
Sustainable Nantucket is an organization near and
dear to my heart (I currently sit on the board and
served as chair 2006-2008). Due no doubt to the state
of the economy, our annual appeal did not have
the results we had expected--not even close--and we
find ourselves in a really tight spot.
Knowing SN and our customers first-hand, I see a
great kinship of values. I would
like to ask you, dear readers, to check out the link
below and see the
work SN is up to. The community is in danger of
losing a number of important programs if
we can't continue to operate. (Some of SN's key
programs are the farmers'
market, the climate action plan, the buy local
campaign,
& the
list goes on.)
Thanks so much for your kind attention. There's an
online form for donations... please consider donating
in that way, because time really is of the essence. It
would be a much appreciated random act of
kindness. -wh

Despite gloomy news, we're excited about the
brave
new world out there
and we're constantly playing around with ways
technology can work for us and keep us connected
with our customers, our bookselling peers, and our
suppliers. Truly revolutionary times.
Facebook has revamped
their store pages, so that's a work in progress. Right
now we have a group, a profile, and a store, Oy! I have
to pare that down, but the key is to Friend the Store.
Lately we've started to use Twitter to
communicate
interesting things that
come along. We're @nantucketbooks, for
those interested. And of course, there's our
aforementioned, newly updated blog: nantucketb
logworks.com
Lastly but maybe most importantly, we now have
wireless access at Bookworks. Feel free to
use our hotspot: the password is
simply: "pleasebuyabook" (Heheh!) We're not sure
how we're going to make money in the new economy,
but then neither is anybody. : )

Sidelines on the Sideline |

Okay these are one of my favorite new items...
introducing: Giant Microbes! Cute stuffed versions of
all your favorite viruses and mitochondria.
In order of the photos, we have
- Lyme Spirochete
- Bookworm
- Dust Mite (On "The Golden Compass," of course)
- Common Cold (Shown with a copy of "Why Dirt is
Good: 5 Ways to Make Germs Your Friends")
- Brain Cell, shown with Tickle Me Freud
- Mono-The Kissing Disease (As a member of
the
Town's Downtown Revitalization Committee, I'm
particularly fond of the Magnetic Poetry Innuendo kit's
packaging as seen with the eyelashy Mono... It
says "I'd like to revitalize your downtown
area." Words to live by, Nantucket!)
All these guys retail for $8.00. Probably no rush on
calling to order, these are the kinds of things that I love
to order but are slow to sell. Of course I'd love
to be proven wrong... hurry in or call us quick.
