"The Tender Bar" is one of my favorites in recent
memory. Many of you know that I've been pushing
this book into the hands of anyone who will listen, so
you'll appreciate what a treat it is for us to have the
author come to the store.
J.R. is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, and it's the
writing that immediately sets this book apart.
The book itself is J.R.'s memoir of growing up in
Manhasset, NY with an
incredible cast of characters as his family and a bar
as his pychological home.
I loved this book for the various types of intelligence
it describes: book learning and an ivy league
education vie with the street smarts of the eloquent
patrons and the seductive wisdom of alchohol in the
grand scheme of things. (Since I'm a bookseller who
also co-founded Cisco Brewers, you can see why all
