Mayflower by Nat Philbrick
|
|
|
The much awaited new book from island author Nat
Philbrick (In the Heart of the Sea) has
landed! Mayflower promises to shed
light on a
chapter that has seen surprisingly little attention in
recent years. This is another occasion for our
community to celebrate a preeminent historian in our
midst.
I love what Janet Maslin had to say in her New York
Times book review:
"In his startling new version of the Mayflower story,
Nathaniel Philbrick finds striking parallels with the
present day. He also finds much opportunity to
whack his reader over the head with a figurative
tomahawk, since the lessons taught by this chapter
in American history are so enduring, and so readily
ignored.
But whacking is not what Mr. Philbrick has in mind.
Instead he has written a judicious, fascinating work
of revisionist history."
Publishers Weekly, in a starred review, raved thusly:
"For Philbrick, this is yet another award-worthy story
of survival."
Congratulations to Nat on another success. I'm sure
we can barely appreciate the amount of time and
research that goes into such a work, but we can
certainly reap the benefits when we read it.

Blue's Connection to Nantucket
|
|
In her autobiographical blurb, Blue has this to say
about her history on Nantucket. "I graduated from
Brown University with an art history degree, and
moved out to Nantucket Island, in Massachusetts, in
order to write. At the time I got my degree, I felt
that art historians were always telling people what to
look for, in a painting for instance, as if they couldn’t
see for themselves. I didn’t agree with that, so I
gave art history a rest. I surprised myself by writing
two books of ghost stories, stories collected by
interviewing people who live on Nantucket Island.
During that time I also worked as a grill cook,
waitress, researcher of old houses, and art gallery
director. My husband and I met and were married on
Nantucket, lived there year-round for another ten
years, and had our two children there."
Her ghost books, "Ghosts of Nantucket"
and "Nantucket Hauntings" have been out of print for
a few years but will be re-issued in one volume this
summer. We will let you know when that becomes
available.
