Tidings from Nantucket Bookworks
March 2006

Greetings!

We've been busy with politics, PR and imminent carpentry, and thought it was time to share some of it all with you. Whoever said the island is dull in the winter is oh so very wrong!

  • Babbitt Chair Contest Winner
    chair better

We ran a contest to name the awesome new chair from Clara Urbahn, and the winning name is:

    BOARIS the Bookworks Babbitt

There were two winners, Evan Marley and Lars Burke. (Lars might be a little genius, since his age was listed at 17 months...) Both receive a $50 gift card.

Thanks to all the participants and an extra extra ginormous thanks to Clara and Kristy Bloomer for creating such a fabulous addition to the store!

    Shelf Improvement at Bookworks

The store will be undergoing a little re-configuration in coming weeks, so please pardon the mess. We'll need to stack books--or potentially even block off certain sections--while we move things around. With any luck we'll still be able to find what you're looking for.

Our goal is to improve the traffic flow a bit and make more room for children's books and toys. If you have any suggestions, please share them with us... the task is daunting, given our "product density" as they say in retail jargon, but the end result should be great.

BookSense Gift Cards Good On- and Off-Island

Customers have had an incredibly great response to our new electronic gift cards. I hope you've had a chance to see them in action--they streamline the whole process and are fun to use.

We don't always--but we should!--stress the fact that the cards can be used at hundreds of other independent booksellers with BookSense across the country. Check this link to see all the participating stores, with more joining the program every week.

Call for Junior Readers to Review Books

Attention Young Readers! If you are interested in writing reviews for us to post on our website and in the store, please sign-up by emailing me (Wendy) at wsmhudson@comcast.net. (Electronic submissions will be infinitely easier to collect, so kids should be old enough to email or have parental help.)

Kids can review any book of their choice, just a paragraph or so is fine. They will earn a $5.00 gift card when they review 5 books, and great bragging rights for their internet presence. : )

Chain Store Regulation for Nantucket's Core District

At this year's Town Meeting, which begins April 3rd, Nantucketers will vote on whether or not to pass an article I put together with help from the Planning Department that would prevent chain stores from locating in Nantucket's core historic district.

This issue has a lot of support, which is encouraging, and it has also drawn quite a bit of media attention. The Associated Press, Fox News, and various bookselling industry publications have all picked up the story.

What people don't always realize is that Nantucket is not the only place taking proactive steps on this issue. Many other towns have already put such measures in place. If you're interested in learning more, click the link below to visit the NewRules.org website.

And of course if you're a voter on Nantucket, be sure to attend Town Meeting... and I hope you'll Vote Yes on Article 42.
