It's all in the perspective...

Sitting at the dinner table one evening last week, Justin, our 4 1/2 year old grandson was talking about his bright red calculator that he called his "measuring tool. "

I told him it was a "calculator" but he kept insisting it was not a calculator, but a measuring tool.

After much banter back and forth I thought I knew how to set him straight once and for all, so I said, "Justin in the REAL world it is called a calculator."

Justin's automatic response was, "Well Grandpa, in the PRETEND world it is a measuring tool."

From the desk of Bob:

Character is built in difficult and challenging times. Well, I know for many people-including myself-these are some character building times to be living. Whatever you are facing, let this be a time of new growth for you.

Thanks to all who have sent so many kind words, deeds, gifts, thoughts and prayers our way these past couple of weeks. Our whole family has been so very comforted and strengthened. Updates about our grandson, Ethan, can be found at:

  Precious Minutes!

Time management has been a very good topic for me to speak about and write about over the last 25 years, since I have literally invested hundreds of hours into the study and science of the concept of time. The return on my investment into this topic has ultimately revolutionized my life. It is one of the best investments that I have made.

Technically, I should mention we mortal men and women do not manage time. What we do manage are the events of our lives. Everything that we do is an event when you stop to think about it. When I started to see every experience in life as an event, that is when my life changed for the better. Some events may last two or three minutes or even less than that, while other events may last several days or weeks or longer. I put life events in a box and I block these life events into my schedule. I have a very specific, color coded schedule which helps me at a glance to see the many scheduled events of my life.

While laying out the days and weeks ahead I block time for thinking, for planning, for implementing, for evaluation, for interruptions, for errors and accidents. I plan and block for specific events and I plan and block openings for anything that may come my way or that I might want to seize as an opportunity.

I actually have a great time playing with time and my schedule. I love to identify key times that I can maximize my life. I block times for learning, for researching, for doing, for being, for myself, and I block time for others. I block time for my priorities, my relationships, my time to rest, restore and heal.

Time is my friend. Time is something that I respect. I despise the personal waste of time. I believe we should never waste any precious minutes as those minutes are a gift that once gone can never be returned to us.

Oh yes, I should mention that my block-timing allows for me so much freedom and flexibility to accomplish what I really deem important that I am never bored. In fact, I do not need an alarm clock to begin my day. There is so much I want to accomplish in my day, that I cannot wait to get out of bed to get started. I never want to waste a bit of the precious minutes that await me!
