Top Global Leaders Are Best Team-Builders © Michael Wynne, 2010
But of a good leader, who talks little, When his work is done, his aim fulfilled, They will all say, "We did it ourselves."

Running a global operation with managers in many different countries is like trying to drive a car from the back seat. You don't have the view and the perspective, nor do you have the controls that those in the front set, the on-site managers, have. Yet, if you manage international operations, you are responsible for what happens throughout the company's global operations.
The only way that you can survive is by creating a truly exceptional global leadership team that runs by itself while coordinating with you and each of the other team members.
You may be the boss according to the organization chart but, if you do things right, you will only be a member of an exceptional team that also does things right and makes you look great. And, because it takes a team to win, you will also win.
- Multicultural team building - Key to global leadership. "How do I manage twelve managers in twelve different countries?" asks the President of the International Division of a Fortune 500 company. The answer is, "You Don't." You build a team, and they manage with you! Effective multi-national teams are the key to the success of today's best global businesses such as Coca-Cola, Hewlett Packard, and many others,
- Multi-cultural teams tend to be more successful in global marketing. Teams of self-directed, multi-cultural managers often solve not only their problems, but also each others' - and sometime's - even their boss's. They are quicker to understand and respond to the complex demands of today's fast-paced, highly competitive global markets.
- The best teams get member "buy-in" on goals and objectives. You get team members to agree on goals, give them room to act, get out of their way, and watch them eat the competition's lunch. Top performers want to have a sense of being in control of their own destiny. They tend to reject anything they perceive as imposed from "on high". What they help plan, they feel they own. The best leaders consult more than order.
- The best global leaders create a team mystique. They constantly "sell" the qualities of team members to one another, creating a mystique that motivates them to work together. They encourage team members to consult with one another. International Operations executives who try to do everything themselves become bottlenecks, frustrate everyone, and wear themselves out.
- Each member of the team gets to host a team meeting in their country. This relieves the leader of the burden of organizing such meetings. It enhances the status of the host, and also creates opportunities for social interaction between team members.
- They create task forces among the team members. Top leaders leverage strengths of individual team members on special projects that benefit all. They also help them understudy one another. This is cross-training and team-building at its best!
- They work as Virtual Teams linked by telephone, internet, and fax. They keep a steady flow of conversation between the team members and themselves. The worst thing you can do is keep a team in the dark.
- They represent and coach team members on career issues. Being away from headquarters can sometimes have a negative effect on an executive career. Great global leaders recognize this and work hard to engineer members' career progress.
- They get to know each member's family. Enlightened global leaders show they care. They know family welfare is essential to key executive performance.
- Great global team leaders relinquish leadership to team members as needed. Self-confident leaders are willing to accept their limitations. When one team member has belter knowledge in a given area, the leader looks to him or her to guide the whole team in that area. A true leader doesn't always need to be a "boss" to be in command.
SUCCESSFUL GLOBAL LEADERS MAKE LEADERS OF ALL TEAM MEMBERS.
THE RESULT? OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE!

If you want to be a great leader, then make the people around you great leaders.
The two basic rules of life are these: 1) Change is inevitable. 2) Everybody resists change. The only person who likes change is a wet baby.
