This has been a year of change for Famhost too. There have been many times when I've wanted to tell everyone about a project, but then something would happen and we decided it wasn't "time" yet.
All of the application servers were replaced with new, more powerful and efficent servers. This makes the third time that some of the "older" customers were moved to new servers.
We also added another Tier1 connection. There are only 9 Tier1 networks in the world. Our servers are located in a secure server facility owned by Level3. Because of the mission critical nature of our services, we require a direct link. We thought we were in good shape because we were directly connected to a Tier1 backbone. In October, Level3 had a major fiber cut in Florida and another major mechanical failure on the other side of the sonet ring serving us shortly after that in Texas. We were told that wouldn't happen but it did. So we researched the other Tier1 networks to determine where we could get direct links and then purchased a fiber line to the Level3 facility to give us two direct fiber links into different Tier1 networks. Customers using web services will switch automatically. Customers using our Application services will have two different IP addresses that they can log into. If there is a connection problem it is usually where your Internet Service Provider connects to a Tier1 network. If you have a slow connection, simply try the other other one.

Greetings!
Wow, the year is almost over. It is hard to believe that it has been 6 years since started hosting the JaRay system. Now most businsses prefer buying software that is hosted and every major software company has hosted applications. The Internet has enabled us to provide services we never even dreamed of. In this newsletter, we'll recap where we are at and what is on the horizon. |

Update Notices
When we add something that we believe will benefit you, we want you to know about it and benefit from it. But change is hard, especially if it means changing processes. In case you were unable to attend the last training class put on by Karen, Jane and Cozy in Vegas, here is a link where you can download the Procedures Manual they prsented. Sometimes employees don't want to do something new, they want it "the old way." I was surprised last week when I took a support call after hours and discovered that a dispatcher was still using the old dispatch screens! If we don't improve our processes, your customers will dwindle away and your competitors will get them. There are many things in the system that are under utilized. So that you will know what is available, we've added a couple of buttons on the Main Menu. Click the "Last Udate" button on the lower left corner of the center panel to see current updates and those planned. Please take a few minutes and review the changes. If you want to make a comment or need help, click the "Report Problem" button. More Information |

Wireless Pen
The new Enterprise Linkwriter server is finally in place and we've been testing it in our Wichita Roto-Rooter. We hope to turn it on for everyone sometime next week. You can now see the forms that the service techs write in the field within just a few seconds from the time they fill out the forms. Currently you can send the forms using a dock on any computer with Internet, Bluetooth to the computer, and a multitude of phones including Blackberries, Nextel i580, 605, 615, 880, Treo and others.
The pen now comes in two styles. The "Executive" version of the pen is a little smaller and cooler looking. The "Worker" version is rugged and can read barcodes. Currently there are about 500 active pens in our system. Several hundred have been in service for over a year with very few problems. With the new viewer, you can now add notes and annotations to the image and either print with or without the changes. If you aren't using the pen yet, you can get an evaluation kit for $495 for either the Executive or Worker versions. Limit 1 per branch office. The evaluation kit includes your choice of wireless pen, software CD, sample note forms, credit card
forms, charger, leather pad holder, 3 months of service, and for all kits ordered before the end of the year, we're going to include a coupon for 100 of one of your standard forms (image only) FREE. We will digitize it and you can attach them to your own customer records. More Information |

Verizon opens network.
Currently, we interface with over 30 cell phone carriers for pagint and are even certified to have our own SIM cards for our GPS system. I don't want to let too much out of the bag, but future cell phone development a pretty sure thing. When Verizon announced plans to open its network to enable any compatible phone and software to work on its network by the close of next year it made us very happy.
The ramifications go beyond cellphones. Verizon hopes that electronics manufacturers will create a variety of devices for its open network, such as notebook computers with wireless broadband, personal music devices, digital cameras, electronic book readers and portable gaming systems. I already have a Kindle and am growing quite fond of it.
In October, Sprint Nextel agreed as part of a class-action settlement to provide departing Sprint customers with the code to "unlock" their phones' software so the phones can be used on other providers' networks, though a California judge has yet to approve the settlement.

AVLwriter
It took over 5 years, but GPS dispatching has finally come of age. Now you can now click on a driver and sort all the jobs by how far they are from him. Not only that, but you can also see the job information, type of job, time promised and even the priority of the customer based on how much they have purchased the last 12 months. Just select the job and it automatically pages to the driver's cell phone. We belive that option alone pays for the AVLwriter, but there is much more!
By ensuring that the vehicles are used for business, fuel is saved. . . a lot of fuel. It increases productivity, enhances security, and according to Rita Campbell, CEO of the Wichita Roto-Rooter, reduces overtime dramatically. If used with the new maintenance module, you can track up to 20 items per vehicle by mileage or date and even show exactly how much a vehicle cost to operate for a specific date range. You'll never miss an oil change again. The driver behavior information is tracked regardless of the vehicle and the vehicle information is tracked regardless of the driver assigned to it. You can buy the Model G300 before the end of the year for only $395 each. We can even finance them for you, so your savings in fuel, maintenance, insurance and increased productivity will be more than it costs you to operate without them. Plus, if you get one unit, you get our new mapping system free. We've made it easy to install too. More Information

We appreciate your business and value your friendship. Please let us know if you have any suggestions or concerns. As Christmas approaches, our hope is that the preparations, planning, and joys that are a part of the season will help us all appreciate the gifts that God has given us and help us strengthen and enjoy our families and relationships more. Many of you know that both my sister and a very close cousin went through bone marrow transplants. We still get to hug Rita and enjoy her laughter. Mike's exploring the other side of the river with lots of friends. Thank you for your prayers and friendship this past year. It has been quite a journey!
Sincerely,
Paul Farmer, President of Famhost
