Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The Eastman School of Music represents a kind of Mecca for me as it features prominently in my musical lineage. I did not attend Eastman School myself but most of my teachers did so I find it, as do many organists, to represent the pinnacle of organ performance. Fortunately, with the establishment of The Eastman Rochester Organ Initiative (EROI), organists and lovers of the organ can attend a first class annual scholarly symposium on an organ related topic. This year's conference was combined with the bi-annual meeting of the American Bach Society and entitled "Bach and the Organ". The four day conference featured papers and concerts by an international cast of scholars and organists and provided an opportunity to hear distinguished academics, and meet with colleagues and students in the august venue of The Eastman School. Sessions were held in the new Hatch Recital Hall at the School of Music and most concerts were played on the Craighead-Saunders Organ at Christ Church. You will find below a review of the concerts. Next week I will write a report on some of the papers.

I was able to chat with two of the NYACOP semi-finalists, Thatcher Lyman and Malcolm Matthews, both students at Eastman who were here in Cleveland in June. Daryl Robinson, the winner of the National competition who will play our chapter recital on October 21, lists David Higgs, head of the organ department at Eastman as one of his teachers. His teacher at the University of Houston, Robert Bates, played a masterful recital at EROI of Bach's Clavierübung III. I always find it exciting to hear the young students of master teachers. Do put the Chapter recital on your calendar!

EROI Report

Craighead-Saunders Organ
Craighead-Saunders organ
The opening concert for the EROI/Bach Society Symposium, Bach and the Organ, held September 27-30 at the Eastman School of Music, was a recreation of the Felix Mendelssohn Organ Concert in Leipzig 1840. Mendelssohn has been credited with re-introducing the music of J.S. Bach to the world. Eastman professors Hans Davidsson, David Higgs and William Porter played the concert on the stunning Craighead-Saunders Organ at Christ Church, Rochester. The organ built by GOArt in 2008 is a research copy of a historical 1776 instrument   from Vilnius, Lithuania. On Friday attendees heard a Bach recital by Eastman students. The evening concert was a recital by Jaques van Oortmerssen, Professor of Organ at the Amsterdam conservatory, also at Christ Church. Works played included Piece d-Orgue, Canzona in D Minor and the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C Major, all by Bach.

An afternoon recital on Saturday was play by Joel Speestra on a pedal clavichord. David Higgs introduced the program and described the value of the pedal clavichord for organ study. It was enlightening to hear Bach Preludes and an organ trio sonata played on this instrument. The evening program was a gala concert of festive cantatas with organ. In addition to Bach, two unpublished cantatas by the composer Gottfried Heinrich Stolzel were played by the Boston Early Music Festival Chamber Ensemble with the Christ Church Schola Cantorum. The high quality of the Stolzel works made one sorry that the bulk of this composers works have been lost.

The first concert on Sunday afternoon was on a magnificent Paul Fritts instrument of 2008 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. Robert Bates played Bach's Clavierübung III. The final concert was at the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester on an Italian Baroque organ that is installed in the fountain court there. Eduardo Bellotti, who is teaching at Eastman this semester, played a program titled "Bach and the Italian Influence".
